James McCartney's Band "Light"
« on: October 16, 2009, 01:21:18 PM »

PAUL McCARTNEY's son JAMES has always avoided the limelight.
Now, though, he's going to be blinded by it.

His band LIGHT made their live debut in front of just 30 people in a tiny boozer in Oxford on Wednesday night - and Bizarre deputy CARL STROUD was there.

And the 20 people left in the town's Jericho Tavern by the end of the 40-minute gig realised they had witnessed something very special indeed.

But no one other than Bizarre had any idea who he was. The quartet have gone to extraordinary lengths to conceal the identity of their lead singer.

They played 11 songs in all - a mixture of full-throttle stormers and delicate acoustic numbers.

But the general sound is glossy, classic rock.

James has a way with melody and a set of pipes which are more than a match for his dad's. A song called Mix saw the band tear into a crunching, grunge workout which echoed NIRVANA.

"What does it mean?" shrieked James repeatedly.

Other highlights included the bright LITTLE RICHARD-aping rock 'n' roll of Main Star, which showed off the honeyed upper registers of the frontman's voice brilliantly.

Denial was a change of pace, with James strapping on an acoustic guitar for a dark ballad about a relationship turning sour. "I don't want your reasons, I don't want you really here," he sang.

And Cherry Blossom Hail Storm borrowed from the kind of psychedelic tune-making the Fab Four once revelled in.

But the highlight was I Love You Dad. Wonder who that one's about?

It was a simple and joyful tribute to his old man, powered by some nifty mandolin plucking underneath the repeated refrain of "I love you dad, I always will, I love you dad, You know I will".

The comparisons are going to be unavoidable but James, 32, has bided his time - THE BEATLES split when Paul was just 28 - and has emerged with a group who have a very bright future indeed.

He's a music veteran already, having co-written and played on tracks on his dad's albums Flaming Pie and Driving Rain.

Make your own mind up. Light play London venue The Fly next Wednesday.

I am glad James has come into the limelight. All the Beatles sons are musicians!

I would hate to be the child of such a famous musician. Everyone would expect you to go into music, and then when you did, they would say you weren't as good as your parent. David Bowie's son said he rejected music for a long time because of this. He's now a film producer.

The only exception I can think of is Rufus Wainwright. I think more people today know who he is than they know Loudon Wainwright III or Kate McGarrigle.

I didn't know Kate McGarrigle was Rufus Wainwright's mother! Blimey.

James and his band are playing their first American gig in Fairfield, Iowa at the Maharishi University on November 14th. I'd go but it's held during Vistors Weekend and I am thinking that only people who are actually thinking about attending the school can go  :-\

This March, multi-instrumentalist James will embark on his first ever UK tour. If these shows are anything like his 2009 warm-up shows, the audience are in for a night of blistering rock tunes. His songs are melody driven, hook laden anthems that show songwriting clearly runs in the family.

James's new album "Available Light" well be released on Sept 21.

James McCartney, son of Sir Paul McCartney, has announced on his website the release of a new EP. The disc, titled Available Light, will be released worldwide on September 21. The album is McCartney’s first official release, though he has appeared on previous albums by his father, both as a songwriter and a guitarist. The album was co-produced by Paul McCartney and David Kahne (The Strokes).

The five-song EP features four original compositions, as well as a cover of Neil Young’s “Old Man.” Young Macca plays all electric guitars, acoustic, mandolin, piano and bass on the disc. Regarding the tracks, which McCartney previewed earlier this year on his U.K. tour, the singer-songwriter said:

“The music was inspired by The Beatles, Nirvana, The Cure, PJ Harvey, Radiohead – and all good music. It is basically rock ’n’ roll, clean-sounding and vocal. The words on the album refer to spirituality, love, family, trying to sort out one’s life, and many other things. I have written the songs over a 10-year period.”

Available Light track listing:

1. “Angel”
2. “Glisten”
3. “My Friend”
4. “Denial”
5. “Old Man”

Yeah, go on then ;)

I'll give you a link tomorrow. Four of the five songs are well done imho. One of them is Neil Young's Old Man. Could there be any particular reason why he recorded that?
