Remove and replace 1 song from "1962-1966"
« on: June 19, 2010, 03:01:48 AM »

If you could remove 1 song from the Beatles' compilation 1962-1966 and add another song (released sometime between '62 and '66) to the compilation, what would they be?

Here is the track list, as a reminder:

Disc 1
1. Love Me Do
2. Please Please Me
3. From Me to You
4. She Loves You
5. I Want to Hold Your Hand
6. All My Loving
7. Can’t Buy Me Love
8. A Hard Day’s Night
9. And I Love Her
10. Eight Days a Week
11. I Feel Fine
12. Ticket to Ride
13. Yesterday

Disc 2
1. Help!
2. You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away
3. We Can Work It Out
4. Day Tripper
5. Drive My Car
6. Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)
7. Nowhere Man
8. Michelle
9. In My Life
10. Girl
11. Paperback Writer
12. Eleanor Rigby
13. Yellow Submarine

Remove: Girl
Replace: Twist and Shout

6 songs from Rubber Soul is a bit much (especially compared to the 2 from Revolver), and although I would consider just about every song on the compilation a classic, "Girl" doesn't stand out as an essential piece.

There are so many other songs that could easily work in this set. It makes me wonder why they didn't make it 14 songs per disc, like the 1967-1970 counterpart, especially since the earlier songs are shorter, and take up less space.

I went with "Twist and Shout," as it seems to be the most recognizable song missing. I am aware that they purposely chose to exclude cover versions of songs, so my next option would be "I Saw Her Standing There."  However, it is a real pity there isn't more Revolver being represented. But the problem with choosing a song from that album is that they seem to be all equally worthy of being included.  But I would side more with either "Here, There and Everywhere" (one of Lennon's favourites AND one of McCartney's favourites), "Got to Get You Into My Life" (a top ten hit/most recognizable?), or "Tomorrow Never Knows" (the critics' and fans' favourite).

Remove: Nowhere Man.

Replace: I Saw Her Standing There. I suppose that of all the songs from 1962-1966 that aren't on the album, that's probably the best known one. Twist & Shout would be the only cover song on the Red & Blue albums and I think it's cool that it's all originals now.

Remove: I Want To Hold Your Hand
Replace: Not A Second Time (or "It Won't Be Long")

PS: Of course, "If I Needed Someone" would be a great addition, as well.

More difficult than the same question asked about the Blue Album. But after putting much thought on that, I would side with Joost on that issue.

Remove : "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" (I never liked this song too much, I think it's one of the most over rated Beatles song).

Replace : Some Revolver song like "Here,There and Everywhere" (my personal favourite) or "For No One".

P.S. I love "Girl". It has always been one of my favourites. It was also the first Beatles song I have ever heard along with "Here Comes The Sun" and "Ticket To Ride" .

Remove - Yesterday (I never did really love this song, in my opinion, it's a bit overrated.)

Replace - I Want To Tell You (Simply, one of the most underrated Beatle songs.)

Hello everyone...my first post and all that!

I like little games like this.

I would remove Drive My Car (love Rubber Soul but over represented on the red album at the expense of Revolver)

I'd replace it with Got To Get You Into My Life. It's not my favourite Revolver track, but it's arguably the most famous one not to appear on 62-66, and I like the way the red and blue albums act as a general introduction to The Beatles for the uninitiated.

Welcome to the forums! I hope you'll enjoy them. ;D

Yes, I always found it amazing that Rubber Soul, tho a great album in itself, was quoted on the red album that much. From 1966 there's only three songs (I think). Besides GTGYIML, I'd say that For No One and Good Day Sunshine are pretty well known songs as well.
