The Beatles Down Under
« on: June 11, 2014, 11:49:36 AM »

There was a great show on our ABC the other night about the week they spent in Oz

When they went to Adelaide they drove the 9 miles from the airport to the City in a open top car with police escort, crowds lined the street nearly the whole way, it was incredible really, not long after the Kennedy shooting, reminded me a bit of that.

I kept thinking, what other band has ever done that

I watched that. It was pretty well done I thought. Though they always seem to want to wheel out Jenny Kee (Chinese/Australian fashion designer) to talk once again how she shagged John.

And you're right. The footage from Adelaide was amazing. Half the population of a city of just over a million people turned out.

The live 1964 footage from Oz is some of the best I have seen, really good quality recording and performance.

Maybe they liked Jimmy Nichol

Maybe it was him who sang the ahhh's on ADITL  ha2ha

It was wasn't it. The guitars had a real crunchy quality. And the band still clearly enjoying performing at that stage.

There must be sufficient good quality live recordings of the Beatles to actually throw together a decent live album.

Yes, maybe EMI haven't thought of that...........till now

maybe the recordings are owned by someone in Oz

I do know it would sound better than Hollywood Bowl

Didn't The Beatles have the Top 6 in New Zealand (or was it Australia?) one week in '64?

Slightly connected - is it right that The Stones only had one Australian No. 1 before 'Honky Tonk Women' in '69, and it wasn't something like 'Satisfaction' or 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' but the unlikely 'Under The Boardwalk'?

That sounds right. The Top 6 thing. I know it was pretty extraordinary.

According to the Australian Single chart record, the Stones had three no 1s on Oz prior to Honky Tonk Woman. Under the Boardwalk, Satisfaction and Paint it Black.

After research, apparently they did have the top six (top seven on some individual charts). They had 8 number 1 records in 1964 and spent 39 of the 52 weeks at the number one spot.

Australia bowed to no one in terms of Beatlemania enthusiasm.

You're right Kev; it reminds me of that too. I couldn't get over the way they stood on that flatbed truck in the pouring rain at the airport. Staying upright under those circumstances must have been incredibly difficult!

Thanks for that Stones' info.
'Under The Boardwalk' is a really strange choice for a 45.

Those Australia stats for The Beatles are remarkable.
It begs the question.....was there anywhere in the world where their chart statistics were unremarkable?
For instance, is it possible that they didn't sell a bean in, say, Finland or Iceland?!

It's hard to get precise figures for a lot of markets. Their impact seemed to be a lot less outside of UK, US, Canada, Australia and Germany. For instance in France they sold only around the same number of records as in Australia. Despite France being three to four times larger in population. In Japan they sold seversl million  but a lot less than the big markets by head of population.

Some European countries where they have figures, such as Austria, they only sold a few hundred thousand records.

Great stats!
The Fabs' French audience was meant to have included many more boys/men than would have seen them elsewhere, according to an old issue of the 'Beatles Monthly', so might that explain their (relatively) lukewarm reception there?
Petula Clark and Sandie Shaw (and Dusty?) were meant to have been huge in France.

I wonder if the Austrians had a local group who adopted The Beatles' look and cleaned up?
Klaus Kaveman & The Kaverns rule!
