04 - The Beatles - Penny Lane (Take 9) (RM8)
Paul wasn't very happy with the cor anglais instrumental solo. The cor anglais is a bit like an oboe but longer and with a pear-shaped bell giving it a more covered timber. Paul was watching a television broadcast of Bach's Second Brandenburg Concerto and heard David Mason's piccolo trumpet. So Paul and George Martin called him in to help with the song's backing instrumental...

David Mason was paid 27 pounds 10 shillings for his work. The result is one of the finest instrumental solos in rock history...

I just got lost for an hour and half watching the Paul in the White House for the Gerschwin Prize show from 2010. Found the link off youtube once I followed one of the links above.
