I heard he used Ringo because he liked Rings... is that true or what?
-
Yeah, that's what I read :)
-
Yes, I believe the name came from Rory Storm back when Ritchie was still in the Huricanes, pre-Beatles. He had a lot of rings even then.
-
I can't remember if it was the first or last name, but he liked one because it sounded like a cowboy name.
-
Starr....that sounds kind of like a cowboy name...

well in response to ever one but the thread starter.
ringo played as ritchie starkey when he first joined the raving texans.his spot was called starr time.the segment in which he showed his skills.
to have a more cowboyish type name he chose ringo after a cowboy named johnny ringo.the ring thing followed afterwards.right alanbert??????????

Richard Starkey

Ringo has said he was called "Rings" for a time, before getting to Ringo.
-
It dates to Rory and The Hurricane days (and before, actually, in Liverpool he was always called 'Rings' because he wore a lot of rings). When the band members decided to give themselves stagenames (ala Paul Ramon, etc.) Ritchie changed it to Ringo, and as Starkey didn't fit he shortened his to Starr.

Yes I know. I wrote my blurb rather confusingly. The guys in the Huricanes were changing their names as well at the time ("Johnny Guitar") and that was what I was referring to. I shouldn't have used 'Paul Ramon' as an example, as it clouded the issue.

Ringo's real name wasn't Starkey but something else (I forgot). His grandmother (or grandfather, I forgot) married this other man (or woman) and it just changed into Starkey. That's what I read in 'The Beatles: Anthology'.
P.S. I'm the one who forgets things...
