Title: 25 Greatest Psychedelic Albums (in no particular order)
Post by: KelMar on July 31, 2016, 02:15:04 AM
I hope this isn't an old list. I didn't see it posted here anyway. It's from udiscovermusic and although it's in no particular order they started off with Revolver.

The 25 Greatest Psychedelic Albums (http://www.udiscovermusic.com/the-25-greatest-psychedelic-albums)

Pretty good list; but I think the great absent is The Who Sell Out.

It looks pretty reasonable. A few I don't recognise. And what's the Nirvana one? Ive never heard of it. It's the Kurt Cobain Nirvana I presume.

I was confused too, but it's another Nirvana. That album is from 1967.

Yeah there are 2 Nirvana's.  I actually have 'The Story Of Simon Simonpath' and I don't think its very good.  Glad to see 'The Fraternal Order Of All' get a shout out.  That is a great and interesting album.  Lots of different bands get copied on the record (Beatles, Doors, Beach Boys, etc,,,).

I can see that only one album was allowed by each band. But I think that in some cases the selection was not appropriate. For instance, The Doors and Surrealistic Pillow are the most famous albums by the Doors and Jefferson Airplane, but they are not exactly psychedelic albums. I think Strange Days and After Bathing At Baxter's are better representatives of the genre.

Thanks Kev.  I'll have to check some of those out.  I only know Soft Machine, Caravan, Gong, Kevin Ayers, and Spirogyra off of that list.

I'm probably throwing a rock in the pond here, but I just cannot see Revolver as psychedelic. Ever. Apart from the fact that I've never found a definition of psychedelia with which I'm wholly comfortable anyway, an album with a completely black & white cover featuring cuts like "Here There And Everywhere", "Eleanor Rigby" and "For No One" doesn't tick that box at all from where I'm sitting.

Pepper, on the other hand, yes...multi coloured with trampoline shows, painting rooms in a colourful way, rocking horse people and giant flowers. Much more like it (whatever "it" is) surely?

Ironically, I was thinking about this exact thing on my way to work today and whole heartedly agree.  There's just a few hints of psych on the album (of course TNK's, but then you grasp at things like 'I'm Only Sleeping', slightly less 'She Said She Said', and then 'Love You To' if Indian music can be listed as psych).  Its just a great pop/rock album with diversity in all seriousness.

Great to hear from you Mr.M.  Hope your doing well.

I agree that Sgt. Pepper's is a better representative of psychedelia than Revolver, following the same line of what I had said before about the albums by the Doors and Jefferson Airplane.

However, I think the cover of Revolver is quite psychedelic despite its lack of color. And "Eleanor Rigby" is not exactly psychedelia but those "aaaahhhh" and strings are far out...

This was my first thought when I saw this list. Since I really don't know a lot of the albums on the list I had more time to think about Revolver.  :)

And where's Tommy??

And where's Tommy??

But Tommy is not exactly a psychedelic record, I think. Moreover, only one album per band was selected, and I think The Who Sell Out should have been in the list because it's the Who's psychedelic album.

Agree about Revolver

She Said, TNK, is about it for me

Never mentioned but a fantastic Psych album

I don't know....to me, "Amazing Journey" and "Acid Queen" are pretty psychedelic. I love The Who Sell Out -- it's one of my favorite Who albums -- but overall it seems more campy and fun (and brilliant) to me, as opposed to psychedelic.

But I defer to you, Hombre. I'm clearly out of my league on this forum.

You don't need to defer, the definition of psychedelia is something ambiguous, actually. Tommy certainly has some psychedelic elements as you mentioned, but I think the band was more prone to hard rock at that time. The Who Sell Out seems to me a more proper choice because of tracks like "Armenia City In The Sky", "I Can See For Miles" and "Relax"; and it was released in late-1967, when psychedelia was at the order of the day. But the difference between both albums is not something so obvious.

The Who Sell Out is one of my favorite albums by the Who too, but I think Tommy is better. My choice was not based on quality but on style.

I really liked The Move. Did they have any decent albums? I think of them more as a singles band.

Thanks, Barry; I didn't mean to sound like I was fishing for a compliment.   ;)

Those are excellent points, especially in regard to "Relax" and "Armenia City in the Sky." I haven't listened to Sell Out in awhile, but I pulled those two tracks up last night and they do indeed sound very psychedelic.

He looks like Lord Lucan's love child with one of the Manson family.

Well, if you like them but aren't into collecting every single record they put out, like me, it's a good set. Lots of familiar hits and a number of rarities included.
