Actually we`ve already written on the subject.
Maybe it`s because John wanted to look and sound like a real tough guy. He took pains to produce such an impression on the people around him while in fact he was quite tough without making such an effort.
As for me, I consider his voice absolutely perfect especially in the early 60s, Please Please Me period. He might have been too critical and didn`t realize that there was nothing to change...

Enchanting voice - you are right!

Thanks! :)

I guess it's true what they say...everyone is their own worst critic.

I just find it sad that John didn't know how beautiful his own voice was, and wanted to sound like Elvis...and I think the Beatles ended up being better than Elvis, even though they admired him so much.

John's studio voice was amazing, i think of the four his voice could turn a good song into a great one in the studio. I get the impression that in the 70s he was upset that(in his mind at least) he never sounded as good live as he did in the studio and was probably one of the reasons for his lack of activity.

Partially agree, but I don't think anyone touches Van Morrison at his peak, as the greatest white soul singer.

Joe Cocker did pretty well in that area. Clapton too had his moments, but yeah, that voice coming out of that little guy is damn impressive.

I wanna know what he was thinking when he picked out this outfit. I really do.

John's voice seemed to have "gone" by the "Rock'n'Roll" album.  "Stand by Me" is heartbreaking to listen to--compared to the confident powerhouse of "Twist and Shout" over a decade before.

I think singing from the diaphram helps--learning some technique helps--but even the best untrained blues singer knows how to work his/her voice rather than destroy it.  Anybody who sings for a living and smokes cigarettes is a complete idiot.  Dylan, George, John . . . .

Johns voice was shot by the White Album.  I think it was the drink and drugs personally.

Lennon was though by definition, a throatier singer than Macca.

Do you mean he sang more from the throat than the diaphram?

If that's true(I can't really tell myself) then I have heard that puts a lot more strain on the vocal chords which definitely could explain it.  Singing from the diaphram takes a lot of the pressure off apparently.

And I guess some of it could just be in the "genes", it's possible Macca just had generally stronger vocal chords.  Sure he can sound rough now, can't sustain the notes as long, because I don't think he really took great care of his voice either for much of his career, but it's possible that besides maybe naturally developing a singing style less from the throat, he just might have had chords more able to stand the wear and tear over the long term.
