I had no idea he based some of his compositions on Rachmaninoff, or that he'd toured with Ringo's All-Starr Band.

Eric Carmen was a classically-trained pianist.  All By Myself was based on Sergei Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2: 2nd Movement...

He was a Beatles fan and admired Paul's singing voice.  He taught himself guitar by purchasing a Beatles chord book.  As a result, we got this when he was with The Raspberries in 1972...
