New Bands are Sounding Beatlish
« on: March 26, 2005, 09:08:47 AM »

Alot of the new rock groups now are reminding me of The Beatles with their emphasis on strong melodies and harmonies.
Kaiser Chiefs are the most effortlessly melodic band since The Beatles. I don't know that much about them, but someone in the band has a very McCartney-like ability to write catchy music. Every song on the "Employment" album is sing-a-longable. I think they must have studied the Fab Four and tried to copy that quality.
Jet,Killers, even a harder rock band like Velvet Revolver-they all seem to be more melodic than the new bands of the past 10 years or so had been. It's a very Beatlish sounding period to me. I like it. I haven't liked this many new bands since the 70's. I absolutely hated all the Creed and Pearl Jam sounding bands that had dominated rock the past few years. It's nice to hear music that's not so dark-that actually has a sense of humor-like The Beatles did.

Right now I can name 15 bands that have Beatle influences:

Ladybug Transistor <--psychedelic, americana, reminds me of The Beatles and Love
Dios <-- Neil Young meets Rubber Soul
Neutral Milk Hotel <-- lofi psychedelic folk-fuzz-rock
Circulatory System <-- lofi psychedelic, Beatles + Beach Boys
Essex Green <-- Kinks, Beatles, Zombies influences
The Delgados
New Pornographers
The Thrills
The Shins <-- their records sound like the link between ruber Soul and Revolver
Elbow <-- i can hear a lot of Pink Floyd and Beatles in there
Belle and Sebastian
Oliver Tremor Control <-- sounds like Sgt. Pepper + Pet Sounds
Grandaddy <-- ELO + Beatles + Pink Floyd
The Stands <-- Bob Dylan + Beatles
Delays <-- Byrds, Beatles

I'd say the Thrills were more Beach Boys, although obvious Beatle influence.
Elbow are just bad. :)

there's a song by a group named jet, and it sounds exactly like the beatles/lennon! im not sure exactly what the name is, but one line has a direct quote from sexy sadie "look what you've done, you've made a fool of everyone". and the piano in the song reminds me alot of the one john uses in imagine, it sounds almost the same.

Jet even took their name from Paul's song. And their first single,at least the first one I heard, sounds exactly like Iggy Pop. I thought it was Iggy until the dj said it was Jet. Still, they imitate well.

Super Furry Animals have been producing a great Beatles\Beach Boys sound for several years now imo.  They do a great job of sounding very original yet giving a nod back to both of those bands.

My two favorites right know are Franz Ferdinand and Sloan.  Both sound really Beatleish Franz Ferdinand in particullar as they have alot of good, catchy tunes much like The Beatles did.  Jet, The Killers and Maroon 5 are also great to especially The Killers "Mr. Brightside"  I like how it repeats itself which I think is a truly origional idea.  Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" is really Beatleish as it changes speed and just has a good solid beat to it and like The Beatles music  "Take Me Out"  makes me want to listen to it over and over again till I find something new in the song that I never heard before.

Jet, yeah talk about lack of creativity. They have a song "Rollover DJ" I believe. It's pretty damn obvious where they got that idea from

It's hard to be in music now and NOT be influenced by the beatles or anyone else. There is no way to block an influence from reaching you. We are influenced by everyone and everything. That being said, they probably were fans. They probably picked up a few things from them.

Check this site out and you can see how many bands have listened to the beatles, that we know of:  http://www.mmguide.musicmatch.com/artist/artist.cgi?ARTISTID=330514

I like The Corrs' new single. It's just nice, and they don't go in for trying to look so cool with hard facial expressions, which is something almost all bands seem to want to do. It gets so boring to just see that over the years. Better to just smile!  :)

I saw this boy-band in some teeny magazine. Some new band, I forget what they were called but DAMN they looked beatlish! long hair, matching suits, etc. If I could only remember what the name of the band was.
