Title: Football!
Post by: Joost on May 14, 2006, 10:16:14 AM
Well, good news for all you non-Dutch football fans: Marco van Basten has decided to not take Ajax striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who has a 1 goal per match average, and select Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who I think isn't even good enough for PSV, instead.

Unbelievable.

There's two Dutch players on each side. And I have a heart for Frank Rijkaard, but for Arsenal as well. I guess I will be a winner either way. Or a loser... ;D

I guess the correct thing to do now would be to wish all those of you not blessed to carry Her Majesties Passport the best of British luck and all that.
But f*ck it. Bless all you Johny Foreigners for showing up, wouldn't be the same without you.
But footballs coming home (it's coming home, its coming home).
Fear the Three Lions.

Where's the New Zealand team?

I'm the lucky possessor of 2 passports. I'm an NZer for Rugby, English for football.

From an NZ point of view football is an elitist sport played by skinny rich kids too scared to get hurt in a real mans game and short-assed bad-tempered Italian immigrants. Rugby in NZ is truly egalitarian - it has no racial or class barriers. I'm always so proud when the All Blacks take the field -teachers and labourers, Pakehas, Maoris, Tongans, Fijians. A real mirror of NZ society. Soccer just doesn't get a look in, and we don't really care

But from my English side - oh what a beautiful game. ENGERLAND!!!!

Title: Re: Football!

Germany - Costa Rica: Germany aren't exactly great this year. They're really lucky they're in such a weak group, the first serious opponent they're gonna face will kick their ass.

Poland - Ecuador: I had the feeling Poland didn't WANT to win for some reason...

Trinidad - Sweden: Trinidad did an amazing job with all their limitations. They fought like lions. Sweden's coach is a coward.

England - Paraguay: Not very convincing. As long as England keeps playing like this I don't see them getting very far.

Argentina - Ivory Coast: Best match so far. Two really good teams. Argentina is probably one of the best teams of the tournament. Ivory Coast has some excellent individual players, but their defense isn't too great. I think Holland vs Ivory Coast is going to be a spectaculair match.

Serbia - Holland: We were lucky Robben played one of his best matches in a long time. I expected more from Serbia though. They weren't as tough as I thought.

Mexico - Iran: the only match I missed so far.

Angola - Portugal: Crap. Weakest match so far. Angola were pretty bad but Portugal seemed to have a hard time anyway.

Poor performance by Australia.
Title: Re: Football!
Post by: Joost on June 13, 2006, 08:14:36 AM
Go Guus! He does it again...

Australia - Japan: Had to miss it unfortunately... I was still at work.

Czech Republic - USA: Czech Republic is still one of the best teams in Europe. Shame for them they'll have to miss Koller in the next matches. The USA didn't stand a chance and won't stand a chance against Italy either, so I think they can already start packing their bags.

Italy - Ghana: Ghana was dissapointing. They just can't shoot! None of their shots came even near the goal. The ref was a coward, he just didn't have the guts to give any penalties (Ghana should've got one) or red cards (Ghana should've had one or two) or a yellow card for a schwalbe.

To be honest I didn't expect anything else. The Czech Republic has one of Europe's best teams, and the USA isn't used to playing against strong teams. They usually only have to play against some Caribean island groups.

Wonder how Germany does tonight.
They are making quite a big deal out of it because there are two Polish players in the German team, those two stated that it would be difficult, but of course they want to beat Poland. One of them said: "They (Poland) will come on the football ground with knives between their teeths" (??)

Much merriment here about the "Do's and Don'ts" list the German authorities have issued to English fans.
Apparently Nazi salutes and goosestepping are "not welcome in Germany."
As Jack Dee said "make your mind up please."
No mention of not invading Poland though.

There's also a posibility that the USA goes to the second round if they beat Ghana and the Czech Republic beats Italy. But in that case Czech Republic and USA will have to win with a difference of at least 5 goals combined (for instance 1-0 and 4-0, 2-0 and 3-0, 2-1 and 4-0, 2-0 and 4-1 etc.).

France is actually one of the better teams in the world. They beat Brazil in the 1998 world cup, then 4 years later Brazil took it back. France actually have been champions more than once. I hate the fact that France beat Brazil today >:( I wanted Brazil to win the whole thing. I don't know why it would be a suprise that France actually won, they are a good team. They dominated Brazil today :'(

I hope I didn't offend you in my post. Its okay that you're new in soccer but a "France can't win" joke isn't really necessary. I live in florida so that obviously makes me American, but whats with the stupid beef Americans got with the french? All this stupid french bashing happened after 9/11, people even went as far as changing french fries to "Freedom fries". We are really proving how much better we are than the french by doing something as stupid as that. First of all America wouldn't be the land of the free without France. They helped us defeat the british in the revolutionary war. If anyone is mad that I've strayed off topic than I'll go back to the topic by saying, if you are going to make a joke you should have made about America's soccer team cause they are a joke. France would destroy America in a game of soccer.

I agree with Wordno's post here.

France won the European championships of 1984 and 2000 and the World Cup in 1998. Two of the world's greatest football players ever, Michel Platini and Zinedine Zidane, are French. And the French national competition is probably among the world's 5 best football competitions.

And another thing: if you'd ever been in France, you wouldn't talk that way about France. It's without a doubt one of the most beautiful countries on the planet, Paris is probably the most fascinating city on earth and the French aren't nearly as bad a some people would like to think they are.

I'm sorry to see that Bush's absurd anti-France campaign apparently to some degree worked.

Just for a jest :)

Things said about France and the French:

'When God created France, he realised  that He had gone overboard in creating  the most perfect  place on Earth. So to balance it out, he created the French people' (Anon)

'The reason French streets have trees planted down both sides is that the Germans like to march in the shade' (Anon)

'We always have been, we are, and I hope that we always shall be detested in France' (The Duke of Wellington)

'The French are just useless. They can't organise a p*ss-up in a brewery' (Elton John)

So perhaps you could explain why Ronaldo whispered to Rooney before the kick-off that he would get him sent off. And then after the sending off Ronaldo winked at Scolari. Job done perhaps?

well France has a history of being ungrateful to...well anyone. just look at their resentment when an american won their bike race 7 years in a row. they just dont like it when people help them or dominate them in their own concepts. and do i have to bring up the fact that they are the best trained military in the world and yet the can never win a war? During world war 2, they refused to let the americans and british march into paris because they wanted to look like they liberated their own people.

there was a great thing online about the results of every war the french fought that was absolutely hilarious

during the european industrial revolution, they refused to adapt and ending up revolting because they allowed themselves to starve and blamed the government even though the king was pushing them to shift themselves to potatos in order to survive the harsh winters.

That's probably mostly because Lance Armstrong is an arrogant prick. Greg Lemond was an American too, he won the Tour as well and the French almost adopted him as one of their own.

Here is an email that was sent to me in work:

There is a very real danger that Cristiano Ronaldo will be voted the fan's best young player at the World Cup despite his pouting, diving, pretty boy antics designed mainly to get himself a lucrative transfer to Real Madrid and thus avoid the good kicking he deserves from Wayne Rooney at the Man United training.

He is currently 1st in the FIFA voting just ahead of Luis Valencia of Ecuador.

Please can everyone go to: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/bypa/eligible.html and do the decent thing by voting for Valencia.

It doesn't matter who you support or if you haven't even seen Luis Valencia play, just STOP Ronaldo.

Takes 30 seconds...You know it makes sense!!!!

PLEASE FORWARD TO AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE

It seems the email campaign has worked!!! Check this out: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/world_cup_2006/5153870.stm

yeah it was foolish, but i don't think he let his team down.  the italians had been playing defensively for 30 minutes, and its not like after Zidane went off they suddenly started attacking.  And as for PK's, i think Henry's substitute still would have shot.

Materazzi's Comments To Zidane Deciphered!

The BBC's called in a deaf lip-reader to study the television footage of the incident and determined the following:

Materazzi's first word to Zidane was "no" before he then told him to "calm down".

He then accused him of being a "liar" and wished "an ugly death to you and your family" on the day the Frenchman's mother had been taken to hospital ill. This was followed by "Go f*** yourself".

Zidane's agent, Alain Migliaccio, has hinted that Zidane will soon reveal exactly what was said by Materazzi.

Piara Powar, national co-ordinator for the anti-racism group Kick It Out told Five Live, said: "If there was a racial slur then Fifa needs to act."

Keith Hackett, head of referees in England, said that if it can be proved that Matterazzi racially abused the Frenchman, then Fifa should take retrospective action for "the good of the game."

Pffff, there's alwaysbeen racial accusations (sp?) on the fields. And it will remain that way. Maybe even just for the psychological effects. Zidane knows that too and if he's really a gentleman, he should know that violence is not the answer.

It's a tough one to call this year. I'd say that without Messi and Eto'o Barca heavily rely on Ronaldinho, who doesn't always rise to the occasion. Lyon are a very good team, but that's a tough draw away to Roma. Milan have to fall some time - their league form is so hopeless - and I beleive it could be to Celtic.

To see Ronaldo (Cristiano) cry was justice to my mind after seeing his smug antics aginst England. Slime. I hope he goes to Real Madrid real soon because I can feel the contempt for him rise over here. Why do good footballers resort to such poor tactics?

Quote from: 360
Here is an email that was sent to me in work:

Arsenal was slightly better in the first half, PSV was better in the second. Thank goodness for that goal that really came out of nowhere, because Kone (the most worthless striker we've had in decades) wouldn't have scored if they'd let him play for a week straight. And good thing we've got the best damn goalkeeper in the world...

They used to be known as The Pensioners:

Free admission to the ground is still given to those surviving Chelsea Pensioners that want to go. The name was dropped in 1952 in an effort to modernise the clubs image, and a new crest was designed. They've been known as the Blues ever since. Though both nicknames are unofficial - as are most clubs nicknames - so you can, and probably will, call them what you like! ;D

That's not fair, Joost. We all know you're a PSV-fan and maybe only you and I know why the ref did that.

That's not fair, Joost. We all know you're a PSV-fan and maybe only you and I know why the ref did that.

OK, I'll explain it then:

There was a foul by one of the PSV players, but the ref decided to let Ajax keep on playing because they were still in possession of the ball. Then they scored and the ref said that that's why he was happy with the goal: because it justified his decision to not stop the game.

However, what my problem is here (and this isn't because I'm a PSV fan, I am perfectly capable of looking at this from a neutral point of view and I know very well that it wasn't Braamhaar's fault that PSV lost with 1-5): referees should NEVER show their emotions after a goal, no matter what their reasons are. First of all, you don't want people to think you're taking sides. I'm not saying he's an Ajax-fan (he gave Ajax 4 yellow cards and none to PSV), but he shouldn't give people a reason to think he is. Second: I think it's wrong that he expressed that he was glad that Ajax scored. Cause that means he wanted Ajax to score and that's wrong, no matter what his reasons are. What if there would've been any kind of doubt about wether or not the ball had crossed the line or wether or not someone was off side (which wasn't the case now, by the way), would he still have been able to judge it from a neutral point of view, because he wanted Ajax to score (which he obviously wanted, no matter if that was because he supports Ajax or because it would justify his earlier decision).
Title: Re: Football!
Post by: BlueMeanie on March 19, 2007, 02:00:44 PM
This has happened before, possibly in England, though I can't be sure. The ref played advantage and the team in posession scored, at which point the ref put his fist in the air! His explanation was the same, but he was still fined by the FA.

Liverpool didn't even have to do their best. PSV was terrible yesterday. PSV started this season with just 15-16 players that are good enough for the first team. That wasn't much of a problem in the first half of the season, but now that a whole bunch of important players are injured they're stuck with a second rate team. PSV has just five strikers, two are currently injured (Farfan and Kone), one hasn't recovered enough yet to play for 90 minutes (Kluivert), one just isn't good enough (Tardelli) and one is 16 years old and played just one professional match so far (Zeefuik).

I hope Liverpool will win the CL now. Major props for their fans. It was a boring match yesterday, but the way their fans kept singing for 90 minutes straight... Amazing... They even booed the ref when he gave Marcellis a red card and then gave him an ovation as he left the field.

That red card was insane, by the way... Marcellis is 18 years old, he played his first match EVER yesterday for PSV's first team, and what he did was barely good for a yellow card, let alone a red one.

Well, at least I still have high hopes for AZ in the UEFA Cup tournament.

Werder Bremen 4-1 AZ Alkmaar ... sorry, Joost :-/ ... but don't worry: 3 of the 4 teams that are going to fight for UEFA Cup are sunnish and Werder Bremen will have to play their best to win it  :) ...

Werder Bremen and Sevilla FC (the last champion) are two of the best teams in Europe today and the UEFA Cup is being very interesting this year!!!  :)

There is no other place like Anfield, it has a unique spirit all of it's own. You wont get any other home supporters cheering for the opposition like that, anywhere in the world.

I couldn't agree more. I look forward to hearing them cheering for Man. U. next time they're there ;D

Please refer to Manchester as Manchester Utd or Man U. There is a blue half of Manchester too.

Yes, and my local bar is a Man. City bar!!! Makes being a Chelsea fan interesting! BTW I usually refer to them as ManUre.

Rax, Milan? I just read that the average age of their defence is 39.

Man, this season was insane... After 20 matches, PSV was 11 points ahead of the rest. They were already selling "PSV 2006-2007 Champions" t-shirts in Eindhoven around christmas. But after that, they just lost it. They've been worthless for the last 14 matches, so bad even that both Ajax and AZ could catch up.

Top 3 before today's matches:
1. AZ - 72 points, + 53 goals
2. Ajax - 72 points, + 47 goals
3. PSV - 72 points, + 46 goals

So PSV could only become champions if AZ didn't win (which was unlikely since they had to play against Excelsior, the number 16 in the competition with nothing to win or lose anymore - and AZ hadn't lost yet in 2007), and if they would win with at least 2 goals more than Ajax (who had to play against Willem II, the number 15)... So guess what? AZ lost, Ajax won with 2-0 and PSV won with 5-1...

Right on!

1. Our football came first. Football as we know it now excists since 1863. American football excists since 1912.
2. In our football matches, the players actually play the ball with their feet most of the time.
3. Professional football is played all around the world. Professional American football is only played in the USA, Germany, the Netherlands and Canada.

So it's football and American football. Not soccer and football.

5 years ago nothing. He's one of the best crossers of the ball ever, his form for Real Madrid has been excellent. One of their best players this season. In any sport you pick on form. Englands right mids: S. Wright-Phillips, A. Lennon, J. Pennant, D. Beckham. Pennant has had a good consistant season, Wrighty hasn't been given a chance by 'The Special One', although has scored goals and looked very fast on the break when he has appeared and Lennon has been reasonably poor this year.

Well done David Beckham.

Contracts mean nothing theses days. Nor does loyalty and honour. He didn't sign it because he wanted to stay for another 4 years, it just protects him. He knew that if a big club came along they'd be able to buy him out of it. Mind you, I think it's probably good business. He hasn't played much lately, his value's going down each season, and you've not done badly without him. He's hardly in competition with Nicolas Anelka as the most selfish player on the planet!

This is a rant from the Arsenal Forum, but I make this guy right on most counts (his last comment especially made me laugh!):

"Does anyone notice a pattern of arsenal getting bent over succesive negiotiating tables for the past 3 summers by clubs for our top players.

first viera goes for around 13mil when r. madrid offered 32 mil the summer before

secondly A cole goes due to tapping up by chelsea we get some money plus gallas a 28 yo defender hardly a top deal for a player called the best left back in the world.

thirdly Mr. Henry well well well we decide last season to offer him an end your career contract which he signs and we reject a 43-47mil offers from barca and r. madrid for the player. now he moves for half of what shevechenko leaves.

next season we will see fabregas go, no questions asked to barca for around 25mil i bet.

you know what i terms of business sense whoever has been doing these deals is more then retarded they are infact criminal in neglegence and lack any sort of return for the club.

dein has been talked about as a great wheeler dealer but those viera and cole deals were limp and whoever did the henry deal must have got the fattest bung known to man.

16mil does not buy us a better player then henry infact it does not even get us darren bent.

everyone forgets that henry was brought to the club as a flop he owes us jsut as much as we owe him. no-one wanted him after juventus we made him the best player in the world. show some respect to the club, the fans and then current players by staying and saying that this is a club that can win th CL.

instead he spits in all of their faces as the captain by saying the only way i can win the CL is to move to a bigger club as you bunch of players have no chance of winning in the next 2 seasons. disgrace and shows no class for someone as classy as henry. worringly we are not likely to sign any good replacements as wenger will leave next summer for barca or the like and apparently arsenal football club only has ever existed and won anything with dein and wenger. ludicrous AFC will be a club after everyone leave and will thrive, we are not defined by our staff and players and yet by isolating the original arsenal fans we risk having a half filled stadium due to the business pound going to watch chelsea and man utd instead. leaving a 60k stadium half empty as real fans are being slowly pushed away from the clubs heart.

sorry for the rant it just seems the players treat the club like a joke now with no respect, like we are spurs or something."

Thanks for the info The end.Contracts are nothing versus money. In the past, now and always. With Ronaldinho,Eto'o and Messi Barcelona will be a great team.Cesc Fabregas is a good footballer but with the national team he has been a dissapointment.I would not mind if he does not come theis year.

Well, 'The Kid' (as I shall have to get used to calling him) is on holiday at the moment and gets back on the 9th next month, but it's been reported that Liverpool have triggered his release fee of 40 million euros and they will now be dealing with personal terms. So hopefully we will get him. I hope he's worth it because there is a history of Spanish strikers finding the Premiership too difficult for them.

He's 29. Actually I think it's a good deal for The Arse. They've probably seen his best years, and the writing was on the wall when Dein left. Arsenal have got a very promising young squad of players, so the future looks bright, but they mustn't forget that when the sh*t hits the fan experience counts.

Actually, the average attendance in The Premier League only dipped by a few hundred last season from it's highest the previous season. It's only bettered by The German Bundesliga. Most clubs are well over 80% full, with 5 or 6 regularly over 95%. Wigan is noticeably a bit sparse, but that's a Rugby League town.

lol, i didnt ever rate mourinho as a manager i always thought someone with a lower wage and less of an ego could easily have took chelsea to the title as the qaulity of players that were already there and finished second the season before he joined with Claudio Ranieri in charge.

But he was good value, and was easliy the most entertaining of all the managers, but he was also passionate about football and people gave him a hard time about his antics, but that was his nature and it would have been wrong to deny him his feelings :P plus he was right shevchenko shouldnt have came to stamford bridge, great player in his prime and maybe one up there with the best but he defenitly never had the pace he once had and you gotta be fast for the premiership.

I think Rafa Benitez has made a great impact at liverpool and has been just successful or maybe more than mourinho depending on what you see a bigger achievment, with limited funds and even twice outwitted mourinho in big European clashes  8)

Anyone see Dida's farcical colapse in the Celtic - Milan game last night? Just after Celtic got the winner in injury time, a fan runs on to the pitch and gives him a playful slap. Hardly touching him. Dida runs after him, then realising he could get something out of this, goes down like a sack of potatoes.

Dida is well known for these kind of antics. He was clearly trying to get the match abandoned. The ref must have known he was acting up, so why no red card? Milan have said that they have no complaints, so they must know too. And Strachan typically, didn't see it. Are all managers blind?

I really hope he gets well and truly dealt with. This kind of thing - together with players diving all the time - is gradually putting me off 'the beautiful game'. I'd far rather watch cricket these days (not easy in Denmark!). It really is high time that referees got wise to it, and I think it makes a really good case for the fourth official reviewing things on video during the game. I've been dead against it for years, but the time has come to put an end to this crap.
Title: Re: Football!
Post by: Kevin on October 04, 2007, 01:19:09 PM
It truly was farcical. You'd think he was shot by a sniper.
this is why football has such a bad rep in countries like NZ and the US. Remember when the Brazilian in South Korea who got knocked on the shoulder and put his hands to his face and collapsed - and it was against a minor team.
Rugby and American Football  just wouldn't stomach this. Something does need to be done.

yeah but at the same time am raging at the wee ned that ran on, and at the security (angry4) hope it dont cause us to replay the match, but then again my mums boyfriend used to work there as the security and he said all they do is watch the match when theyre supposed to be stewarding  ::)

Shame on Dida for how he reacted but more shame on the wee ned, what did he possibly think was gonna happen, hes now gonna be banned from the games and if a rematch has to take place and we lose it, hes gonna PE N#1.

And it could so easily have been a full blown blow or injury due to a weapon, Dida aint paid to take that kinda thing he's paid to stop goals, so really the stewards are to blame fully.

but cmon the hoops great result.

Just looked at that clip, and it looks like the guy didn't even get him on the face!

If somebody wants to make a run for it I doubt that it's that difficult to get past the stewards as they're a few yards apart.. And he didn't have far too run. These guys are unpaid, and most of them just want to see the game. I expect Celtic will just get a hefty fine. Worse thing happened to Denmark after a fan ran on the pitch a few months ago, aimed a punch at a player, missed, and got the ref instead! The ref abandoned the game, awarded the match to Sweden 3-0. FIFA banned them from playing their next 4 home qualifiers at the National Stadium, and told them they had to play at least 200 miles away. Then they realised they couldn't be 200 miles away, and still be in Denmark!

they do get paid well most of them through the security company that they are employed with like my mums boyfriend was but paid or not they took on a job, and if they cant stop one man/boy from getting on the park they aint doing the job properly as that is what they're employed for ?.

Also why did he feel the need to touch Dida ? i could understand if he actually wanted to hurt him for some reason, but to touch him for the sake of touching him is just daft, and surely he must have realised what it could cost Celtic FC why not just run to the players .

Sorry, I thought the majority of them were volunteers.

In the heat of the moment the craziest things can seem like a good idea. I expect he was well tanked up, and just wanted to take the p*ss.

As for getting on the pitch, if you have two stewards, four yards apart, how easy do you think it is for a bloke in the front row of seats to make a dash for it? Very. There's no way they'll react quickly enough to stop him. The crowd is too close to the pitch to make it possible. They should have got hold of him before they did though.
Title: Re: Football!
Post by: fendertele on October 04, 2007, 02:42:47 PM
just watching the clip, in the stewards defense they were preoccupied by the supporters charging the players at the corner flag, so that obviously had a lot to do with the wee man thinking he could charge the pitch, still though it was great result even if we had been outplayed for most of the game.  :)

Well I hope Roman Abramovich had a wonderful birthday watching Chelsea play in exactly the same way as they did under Jose. The only thing that Grant didn't do, that Jose would have, is stick another defender on when it went to 2-0. Which is exactly what he should have done, as the win was more important than the goal difference.

I can see us losing or drawing this season because they won't stop attacking. So hopefully Roman is going to be happy with a trophyless season. Obviously 10 trophies in the last 9 years playing sensible, but good football, is not enough. Next manager? Ossie Ardilles!!

Whilst watching West Ham the other day (nothing better to do) I noticed that they not only have a 'McCartney', but also a 'Spector'! Aaron Lennon plays for Spurs. Any other football related Beatles players?

I've been reading mostly Dutch books and (auto) biographies of soccer players that most of you probably never heard of... The most interesting book I've read lately (although it wasn't very well written) was 'Heroine Godverdomme'. It's the autobiography of a guy who used to play drums in the most popular Dutch band ever (Doe Maar) but ended up as a homeless heroin addict. He recovered just a few years ago after a thirty year addiction. The probably most bizarre anecdote was that he once broke into a house to get money to buy drugs and that after going into a bedroom he saw a huge poster of himself. Wow.

A terrific book was published about 10 years ago in the UK called 'Brilliant Orange' by David Winner and it's all about the rise of Dutch football through the 50s and 60s.
It's easily the best (relatively) recent sports book I've read and, for Beatles' fans, touches on the youth culture of the 60s in Amsterdam.

If you consider that they were born about a year apart, the achievements of Cruyff when compared to the achievements of George Best read like the achievements of The Beatles over Geri Halliwell!
Pre-Cruyff, Ajax seem to have been the equivalent of Brentford and Holland the equivalent of Luxembourg.

That's pretty heavily exaggerated and way too much credit for Cruijff.

You think?

The Dutch had a pivotal result some time in the 50s, a heavy defeat to either Belgium or indeed Luxembourg (can't remember which; 1-6?) that drew a line in the sand and within two decades they were the most admired (and best, even though they lost to Germany) team in the world.....this from a country who had never previously qualified for the competition.

And Ajax (and Cruyff) won three consecutive European Cups. That's THREE.
To put that in context, Arsenal have never won it and Man. Utd., who virtually define themselves by the competition, have scrambled, after numerous attempts, to the same number often via luck (Munich) and penalty shoot-outs (Chelsea).

The last one Ajaz won was in 1973, Cruyff joined Barcelona in, erm, 1973.

It's not hard to explain why the Dutch national team was so bad in the 1950s. Unlike in most other European countries, the national football association in The Netherlands staunchly held onto amateurism until 1954. Clubs were forbidden to pay their players anything. So a lot of the good players went to foreign clubs and were subsequently banned from the national team. The national team consisted entirely of amateur players from the Dutch league, who all had fulltime day jobs.

In March 1953 both the official national team and a team consisting of banned Dutch players played  benefit matches for the victims of the North Sea Flood. The official national team lost to Denmark in a home match while the banned players defeated the French national team in Paris. Go figure.

this from a country who had never previously qualified for the competition.
That's not true. The Netherlands qualified for the World Cup, and participated, in 1934 and 1938. Also, at the Olympic Games football tournament, which until 1930 was basically the forerunner of the World Cup tournament, The Netherlands won bronze medals in 1908, 1912 and 1920.

And Ajax (and Cruyff) won three consecutive European Cups. That's THREE.
And a year before Ajax won those European cups another Dutch club, Feyenoord, won the European Cup. Cruijff had nothing to do with that.

The last one Ajaz won was in 1973, Cruyff joined Barcelona in, erm, 1973.
It wasn't the last won, they won the European Cup again in 1995. And did you notice what Cruijff won with Barcelona in the five seasons he played there? Only one national title and one national cup, that's all.
Title: Re: Football!

So, mainly for political reasons and all this is gone into detail in the book, Dutch football wasn't exactly top of the tree after the war and even when Cruyff made his Ajax debut in the mid-60s.

But where was it ten years later? Higher or lower? Or should that be much, much, much higher or lower?

And well done for another Dutch club for winning the European club, but Cruyff won three! In a row! Can you imagine how much would be made of that by a club like Manchester United or Chelsea today? We'd never hear the last of it.

And have a heart for me forgetting that truly dire final in 1995!

Maybe you're too close to the subject to see how Cruyff might be/is regarded outside Holland.
I once picked up a Van Morrison fanzine and they'd recently done a poll to determine Van's best LP.
'Astral Weeks' was tenth!

Football is a team sport. One exceptional player can't help "the equivalent of Brentford" win three European Cups or get "the equivalent of Luxembourg" into the World Cup final. Even with Messi Argentina didn't get past the quarter finals at either the 2010 World Cup or the 2011 Copa America. Even with Zlatan, Sweden didn't even qualify for the upcoming World Cup tournament.

Countries like Germany or Brazil will have four or five exceptional players at pretty much any given time. Holland is considerably smaller and we just have to be lucky to have a good generation.

Before the war, "we" were in the top four at four consecutive Olympic games. In the 40s and 50s we had a few world class players with Lenstra, Rijvers, Wilkes (star player of Inter Milan at the time) and De Munck. But unfortionately, they were all either banished from the national team or playing amateur football. That gave us a serious backlog, which was followed by what was probably a somewhat weaker generation. Then we had a great one in the mid-70s with not just Cruijff but also Neeskens, Van Hanegem and Rensenbrink. Then in the early 80s we couldn't qualify for any tournament at all, but in 1988 we had Van Basten, Gullit, Rijkaard and Koeman in top form and won the European Championship. Then we didn't play in another final for 22 years. At the last World Cup, we had Van Persie, Sneijder, Van der Vaart and Robben at their peaks, but at the upcoming World Cup we're probably going to suck again. We'll always have our ups and downs.

I know how great Cruijff was. But I very much disagree with the idea that Holland used to be "the equivalent of Luxembourg" and that Cruijff single-handedly changed that. Cruijff happened to be part of the first generation of really good Dutch players after the national football association finally got it's sh*t together and managed to catch up with the rest of Europe on an organizational level. And he might have been the best Dutch player there ever was, but he was also a complete diva who made enemies and created unrest wherever he went. In fact, I think that if Cruijff hadn't bullied goalkeeper Jan van Beveren (who was far superior to Jan Jongbloed) and Willy van der Kuijlen (all-time topscorer of the Dutch eredivisie) out of the national team, we might have actually won two World Cups in the 1970s...

I'm too busy to go back to 'Brilliant Orange' (try and get a copy if you haven't read it) but although the Brentford/Luxembourg links might have been my own, anyone reading that book would have come to roughly the same conclusion re. Dutch football, post war.
I didn't talk about 'why' it was like that, or the history/politics that preceded it, I just stated 'it was' like that!
Northern Ireland and Wales played in the 1958 World Cup, Holland didn't.

Of course Cruyff was selfish, arrogant, a maverick (a 60s maverick and he could only have come from that ultimate generation - see Lennon, Dylan, Beefheart etc.) but you definitely underestimate his reputation, in Britain at least.
The major events here in 1977 were (a) the Jubilee and (b) the Dutch, and specifically Cruyff, playing in a friendly at Wembley. I even seem to remember a will he/won't he play saga leading up to the game. The notion that Cruyff wouldn't be playing was like The Jimi Hendrix Experience taking the stage without Jimi Hendrix.

I know that 1988 team won the European Championship, but to my mind they were a shadow of the Cruyff era. Like comparing The Beatles to Wings. Even the kit (the 1980s.....shouldn't be surprised) was horrible.

As for one player making a huge difference to a team, I'd argue that Argentina wouldn't have got anywhere near either the 1986 or the 1990 World Cup finals without Maradona, and, although a different sport, Ian Botham pretty much turned around the Ashes in 1981 on his own. England were 500-1 to win the Third Test before he came in.

Anyway, today's not the day to dispute Cruyff's influence, today's the day to laugh at Arsenal.
I'd even put it in my diary at the beginning of the year.....'February 19th - Arsenal get knocked out of Europe'. It's as likely to happen as Mothering Sunday or Good Friday.

Erm, I trust you don't support Arsenal!

Northern Ireland and Wales played in the 1958 World Cup, Holland didn’t.
By 1958 Holland had barely gotten used to (semi) professionalism, while the majority of the 1958 national squads of Northern Ireland and Wales played for big English clubs.

Of course Cruyff was selfish, arrogant, a maverick (a 60s maverick and he could only have come from that ultimate generation - see Lennon, Dylan, Beefheart etc.)
The people you mention were artists. Cruijff was a sportsman who played a team sport. Huge difference.

but you definitely underestimate his reputation, in Britain at least.
I once payed 100 euros for a signed copy of a Cruijff biography, so I don’t think I do.  ;D

I know that 1988 team won the European Championship, but to my mind they were a shadow of the Cruyff era. Like comparing The Beatles to Wings.
That’s your opinion. But fact is that, unlike Cruijff’s generation, they actually won a tournament. And in sports, that’s all that counts in the end.

Erm, I trust you don't support Arsenal!

Good call.  ;D

The Dutch national team played two World Cup finals (1978 and 2010) and won a European Championship final without Cruijff's involvement. Ajax won the Champions League and the UEFA Cup without Cruijff's involvement. Feyenoord won the the European Cup and two UEFA Cups without Cruijff's involvement. PSV won the European Cup and the UEFA Cup without Cruijff's involvement.

That 1988 kit was horrible though, and, unlike the Cruyff side, I have no fond memories of that team.....and even less of the one that played in those dire semi-final and final games four years ago.

And I'd argue that it's much easier (not nearly as fun or interesting though) to be the bit that follows the initial explosion, .....see 'The Beatles'.

The 'Brilliant Orange' book is particularly good on the counter-culture of Amsterdam in the 60s (indeed I must fill my boots with some more mid-60s Dutch pop), but by 1988 the book is less interesting as it really only focuses on the matches. I don't think the pop culture, or the importance of football on it, of the time gets mentioned. Why would it?

Might the 3-1 against England have something to do with that? ;)

Being Dutch and a football fan and having grown up in the 1980s, I can assure you that the 1988 European Championship was a HUGE thing. Beating the Germans and actually winning a final was an incredibly big deal. Mention "the 80s" to any Dutch male and you've got a good chance that the 1988 European Championship will be the first thing he mentions. And the whole madness that the supporters of the Dutch national team are known for now (with all the dressing up in orange, covering entire streets in orange, etc.) that didn't start in 1974. It started in 1988.

I thought I'd bring this topic up again.

So, do we still have some football (soccer, that is) fans here?

I've supported PSV ever since I was a little kid. Even though I don't have a season ticket I rarely miss a home match. And every once in a while I try to catch a game somewhere else. Next week I'm going to see Club Brugge against Standard Luik in Belgium.

I also play football myself, as a full back or side midfielder, but I'm absolutely terrible.

Football used to be my biggest love as a kid. I could play every day, each day. Used to watch tons of games, make lists with favourite players, play FIFA (EA Sports) on PC like crazy etc. The Spanish league was my favourite, with Real Madrid as the team I supported. I still watch the occasional Champions League game or the Spanish 'el clasico', but I wouldn't say it's an interest of mine anymore. Likewise, I still play occasionally - as a right forward. Was selected for the school team a few times, so that's gotta count for something.

Was selected for the school team a few times, so that's gotta count for something.

I played one match for the A1 (highest youth team) of my local club a long time ago. But the reason for that was simple: I played in the A2 and the A1 needed an extra player and came to get one from us. My team mates suggested that the A1 would take me, which they did. I'm not sure if they knew that my team just wanted to get rid of me.  ha2ha

My dad was a really good football player though. He was the star of his local amateur club and once got an offer to play professional football for Willem II (which he turned down because he thought he was already to old to become a professional). I heard that my grandfather was also pretty good. And one of his cousins even made it to the national team and later became manager for PSV. Too bad I didn't inherit their football genes.
