interesting john guitar fact (?)
« on: December 02, 2010, 03:36:15 PM »

**spoiler alert!**
-----------------
in the lennon pbs special one of jl's bandmates describes how john would intentionally put the D string on his guitar out of tune so that he could hear which guitar was his
-
supposedly john said that he did this when the beatles would make records in mono so he could single out his playing to his aunt mimi and let her hear which guitar part was him
-
has anyone else heard this?
are there any songs where this can be heard prominently?
-
i can't think of any beatles song that is 'out of tune'- but this factoid really caught my interest

It ain't true... nope...

If you de-tune any string by one fret then every chord played (with standard fingering) would be notably out of tune. Lennon was essentially a rhythm guitarist, consequently the Beatles songs would have sounded unbelievably crappy, let alone totally unprofessional.

Well, if they were ever too stoned to tune their guitars, then yeah, that's a whole different issue.  ;)
