Best double albums

1. Tommy (The Who, 1969). In my opinion, the definitive rock opera.

2. White Album (The Beatles, 1968). Probably the most eclectic rock album ever recorded.

3. Quadrophenia (The Who, 1973). The second rock opera by the Who, where the band's virtuosity is exhibited at its highest level.

4. Exile On Main Street (The Rolling Stones, 1972). A bit monotonous, but full of great songs.

5. All Things Must Pass (George Harrison, 1970). The best of George collected in two discs (I'm discarding the third disc, "Apple Jam").

I agree wholeheartedly with your first three choices -- and descriptions -- Hombre. I can't address the second two, because I don't know very much about the Stones (never cared much for them, for some reason) or about George's solo work.

'Wheels of Fire' - Cream
'Livin' The Blues' - Canned Heat
'Out Of The Blue' - Electric Light Orchestra
'Made In Japan' - Deep Purple
'Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs' - Derek and the Dominos

There's plenty more.

'Physical Graffiti' from Zeppelin is one of my all time favorites.

While I rarely meet a double album that wouldn't work better as a single,  a few  manage to sustain the pace well enough. The White Album is one, All Things Must Pass I think does just enough, although again I'd prefer it as a single.

Of ones not already mentioned, I think The Wall by Pink Floyd also works well as a double album. Probably as it comes across  more theatrically.

Blonde on Blonde is truly great. There's barely a below average cut on it. Although padding out one whole side with one song, as affecting as Sad Eyed Lady is, does seem to be cheating just a little.  ;)

Canned Heat's 'Livin' The Blues' that I mentioned before has probably the most blatant cheat. One of the disks contains just one song, 'Refried Boogie' - both sides - a live jam with, yes, the guitar solo, bass solo, drum solo...Zzzzzzzz...

But, as Utah Phillips might say, it's good though.

P.S. this is the album with 'Going Up The Country' on it - the redeemer.

It truly is, Moog mate! 

I reckon Dylan invented whole side songs.  The next one, as far as I can recollect, was a couple of years later...

2. Bob Dylan - 'Blonde on Blonde' (1966)

3. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 'Electric Ladyland' (1968)

4. Captain Beefheart - 'Trout Mask Replica' (1969).....don't like it nearly as much as his first two LPs though.

5. The Rolling Stones - 'Exile On Main Street' (1972).....the last Stones' LP in my collection and, with along with 'Tommy', the one of all the famous doubles which most needs pruning.
That said, I wouldn't touch Side 2:
'Sweet Virginia'/'Torn and Frayed'/'Sweet Black Angel'/'Loving Cup'.....that's brilliant.

Mind you, have you noticed that even the doubles of the 60s were relatively short?
Normally about 72-75 minutes, and 'Exile' is actually only 67 minutes long, that's only 20 minutes longer than 'Automatic For The People' by R.E.M.

30 new songs by a major act (THE major act) in one sitting is surely unprecedented, especially if you consider that none of those songs appeared anywhere else.

Throw in a 45 only release (probably THE greatest 45 only release) the previous August and, whatever people may think of them (one is brilliant, one is lousy), two solo LPs that were released in the SAME month as the 'White Album' and, well, words fail me! 
Entire careers have been founded on less.

In the album Da Capo by Love, released at the beginning of 1967, the B-side included only one song called "Revelation". And it was 19 minutes long! That was after Dylan but before Iron Butterfly.

Yep love it TK, but haven't listened to it right through for ages as I only have the LP.  If you trimmed it to a single album, it would prolly still be Zeps finest.

Ten Years Gone is my favourite Zep song of all time. Just magnificent. And I love The Rover too.

Lots of great songs on that LP.  Zeppelin is my 2nd fav band!

"Kiss Alive" was a great double album when I was a kid, as was "Scorpions Live"!  icon_king
