Title: Cass Elliot
Post by: KelMar on July 29, 2011, 05:21:28 AM
July 29, 1974: Mamas And The Papas singer Cass Elliot died in her sleep from a heart attack after playing a sold out show in London, England. She was staying at Harry Nilson's London flat when she died. Her only solo hit was 'Dream a Little Dream of Me,' which also featured the rest of The Mamas and The Papas. Had also been a member of The Mugwumps.

One of the greatest voices ever!

Cass Elliot said this in a 1968 Interview with Rolling Stone Magazine...

It’s true, I did get hit on the head by a pipe that fell down and my range was increased by three notes. They were tearing this club apart in the islands, revamping it, putting in a dance floor. Workmen dropped a thin metal plumbing pipe and it hit me on the head and knocked me to the ground. I had a concussion and went to the hospital. I had a bad headache for about two weeks and all of a sudden I was singing higher. It’s true. Honest to God.

How's it going "In My Life?" I LOVE THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS! I lived in California for 29 years and while partying on the beach, listening to "California Dreamin'" was a "must hear California anthem song!" I love that song! Other California anthem songs were "California Girls" by The Beach Boys and "Hotel California" by The Eagles just to name a few. Take care.

Yeah, the dress in the Creeque Alley video isn't too flattering but they had one of her other outfits on display at the Hall of Fame and it was gorgeous. I hope to run across an image of her wearing it.

And just think, it wasn't the drugs that killed her, she choked to death because of a sandwich.

THE MAMAS AND THE PAPAS were one of them.

For those of you who miss Cass' voice, listen to her kid sister, Leah Kunkle. Here is a duet she did with Jimmy Webb. Genetics!

She had a very rich, soaring voice. Powerful and commanding. It makes me sad that people have turned her into a fat joke after her death when she was so much more than that. She seemed like a truly beautiful soul.

What do you mean? I don't think I've seen her referred to as a 'fat joke'.

Unfortunately at the time there were rude remarks made about her and the cause of her death.  I don't care to repeat them.  I'm happy to see that in the forty years that have passed, they're finally forgotten.

This is actually not true; she died from heart complications brought on by weight lost too quickly, if I recall correctly. The whole ham-sandwich tale started because the authorities found a half-eaten sandwich in the flat (which, BTW, is the same one Keith Moon died in).

Looks like I was a bit off:

Although some sources claim her death was due to a heart attack or heart failure, her death certificate attributes death to "fatty myocardial degeneration due to obesity", a form of steatosis.

That's odd. I had heard that her heart attack was due to rapid weight loss. She had been fasting for several days before her death, apparently.

What I read, and also can not relocate, is that her her father died young from the same heart condition. So perhaps it was a hereditary condition.
