Title: A David Gilmour Thread.....
Post by: aspinall_lover on August 09, 2008, 12:26:53 AM
Ok Sandra.............I'm taking the first step.  As I can see on this forum, there are alot of "David Gilmour lovers" on here..........as I am too.  Hey, I didn't chase the Floyd all over Texas in 1987/88 to try and meet Nick or Rick.......it was "all about David".  So here's the first photo to start this thread.  And please, everyone contribute something..........I've got some "good ones" up my sleeve......

There was this old site that had TONS of Gilmour pics and even animated gifs and stuff, but it closed down.  :-/  He's just so nice to look at. Silly, I know, but I can't help it.  :X

There's some decent pics of him older, but not many. He didn't age all that well. Unfortunately.
I'll try to keep my pics to a minimum so as not to over do. How's this one?

Gilmour's not a bad looking older man, but something about his older self sort of reminds me of a komodo dragon.  :X No idea why, but there you go.

Two of my favorite David pics. He looks good with a beard.

He actually was a male model. Sort of. Heh.

2003 interview:

RC: How did male modeling fit into all this?

I was hanging about in London for moments in the mid-60s. I was getting a little bored with Cambridge. Being in a band, gigging two to five times a week, there wasn't much money around. We'd get an average of A320 to A325 a gig, to share between six or seven people. Every once a while, someone I knew would say that they wanted someone to go up to Santa Pod Raceway next week and sit in a stupid motor with stupid clothes on and have your photo taken. It was A350 for a day. Fifty quid a day! I was in. I was never a model at an agency or anything like that, but if you could get a job like that, the equivalent of three weeks gigging, you jumped at it. That said, I probably only did three days like that in my life. So, it's not strictly accurate when I'm described as a male model.

RC: So, there are no pictures of you with a pipe or your hat at a jaunty angle?

No! None of that sort of stuff!

I like how he's all defensive about it!  ;D Personally, I think he would have been quite successful at it had the whole band thing not worked out so well!   ;)

And YES, Sandra...............David is one of the most "underrated" guitarist" around..........I think Dave is amazing in his playing.............no "super-sonic" jinks, but just plain, classic, "together" playing.............that's what I like.

David Gilmour's response to Rick Wright's death:

No one can replace Richard Wright. He was my musical partner and my friend.

In the welter of arguments about who or what was Pink Floyd, Rick's enormous input was frequently forgotten.

He was gentle, unassuming and private but his soulful voice and playing were vital, magical components of our most recognised Pink Floyd sound.

I have never played with anyone quite like him. The blend of his and my voices and our musical telepathy reached their first major flowering in 1971 on 'Echoes'. In my view all the greatest PF moments are the ones where he is in full flow. After all, without 'Us and Them' and 'The Great Gig In The Sky', both of which he wrote, what would 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' have been? Without his quiet touch the Album 'Wish You Were Here' would not quite have worked.

In our middle years, for many reasons he lost his way for a while, but in the early Nineties, with 'The Division Bell', his vitality, spark and humour returned to him and then the audience reaction to his appearances on my tour in 2006 was hugely uplifting and it's a mark of his modesty that those standing ovations came as a huge surprise to him, (though not to the rest of us).

Like Rick, I don't find it easy to express my feelings in words, but I loved him and will miss him enormously.

^^^^^^I have that same feeling too, girlfriend.  I liked my "hairbands" back in the '80's........Whitesnake, Motely Crue, you know................but I ALWAYS wanted to see the "classic" rockers and that's why I went crazy when "the Floyd" got back together for the MLOR tour in 1987.  I had seen them, what..........5,6 times during 87/88 thru Texas.  Excellent every show......maybe it was 7 times.......I know I saw them in Dallas, Nov/1987 for three shows at the Reunion Arena.............

Here's Rolling Stone's list of the The Twenty-Five Most Underrated Guitarists. Notice Gilmour isn't on it?? He CLEARLY should be. But you know why he's not? Because the insane people at Rolling Stone rank him at #82 on their bogus list of Greatest Guitarist of All Time!! Personally, I think they have some weird kind of hatred for The Floyd over at that magazine!

1. Prince
2. Kurt Cobain
3. Neil Young
4. George Harrison
5. Ace Frehley
6. Mike McCready
7. Lindsey Buckingham
8. Mick Taylor
9. Nels Cline
10. Johnny Greenwood
11. Tom Verlaine
12. Carrie Brownstein
13. Mick Jones
14. Robert Fripp
15. Johnny Marr
16. John Frusciante
17. Izzy Stradlin
18. Daniel Johns
19. Vernon Reid
20. Robbie Robertson
21. Mick Ronson
22. Billy Corgan
23. Elliott Smith
24. Eddie Hazel
25. Phil Keaggy

Anyway, am I crazy? Where do you all rank him? Does anyone agree that he's vastly underrated?

And now, a giant photo:  :X
Just look at the passion in that face! Ever see Eddie Van Halen when he plays? Looks like a goof ball with a mental patient smile plastered on his face. All flash, little substance.

I hear that one come up a lot. I've got to give it a good listen to again. Many Gilmour solos make me FEEL something. I can't really say that about a lot of other artists. Something about his playing. No idea what it is not being a musician, but he just really seems to be to bare his soul in his music.

Great question and good point. I hope people who know this stuff answer cuz I know very little about the Floyd/Beatles connections. I think all I know about is Gilmour playing on "No More Lonely Nights." Which is awesome, of course. And he wrote a song about Lennon's murder. That's the extent of my knowledge unfortunately.

No, we'll keep the David Gilmour thread going.  I'll find pictures and post.  Just like I do on my Greg Lake thread.  Keep this thread going.  I feel I have a very strong "connection" to some of you out here with this Gilmour thread.  As for the Beatles/Pink Floyd connection, they both were in Abbey Road Studios summer of '67 working on their respective albums, "Sgt. Pepper" and "Pipers".  They were just down the hallway from each other from what I understand.  And who probably "logged" the most studios hours, Abbey Road and other, would probably be in my book Jimmy Page.  He was afterall, before Zep, "the" session man people went to.  He played on hundreds of recordings during that early/mid 60's period.  Correct me if I'm wrong..............now..........off to find some pictures of our sexy Dave............

Saw Gilmour last night on TV. Live in Gdansk, Poland marking the anniversary of solidarity. Was this Dave and Rick Wrights last gig together? i also noticed Guy Pratt on bass but did not recognise the other musicians.

That's awesome. God, they're SO young. I love the host. "Bink Floyd!"
Poor Dave had to "do" Syd at the beginning. He said it was so embarrassing. Plus, he couldn't really sing the songs all that well. Here's one where you can see how annoyed he looks, especially during Flaming, but still cute as hell!

This has to be the greatest solo of all time. Hands down. Any version. And the longer the better. Genius. And they call Clapton God. HA! Where's the emotion? Does he have much? Not a Clapton enthusiast myself so who knows.

Paul and Dave (and Ian Paice): I'm All Shook Up. It's funny, Gilmour was in a super group of his own, yet he's playing sideman to Macca. I love that.

Gilmour is perfect guitarist everywhere. not only in psychedelic/lsd/tripping rock, he could make some of the rockiest tunes using similarities of 50s rock'n'roll (Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley etc), for example:

well I want to go back with Gilmour/McCartney stuff. I really love how they both collaborated in music. the very first time was the rockestra theme, then "no more lonely nights", then "Run Devil Run" album... but aren't we just forgot that Dave have played on "We Got Married" too in 1988/9.
I never knew that Gilmour have also played on this song. when it came the solo, I really thought that it was so psychedelic-ish and Pink Floyd were truly the greatest psychedelic band ever, so I always used to think it has that Gilmour's sound. one of the most underrated songs by Macca, so and his album "Flowers in the Dirt"!
