Title: 50 Most Important Drummers Of All Time

Ringo Starr.
Starr is arguably the single most influential rock drummer of all time. He was born Richard Starkey on July 7, 1940, and gained acclaim in Liverpool playing club gigs with Rory Storme And The Hurricanes in the late ’50s. Starr began drumming with the Beatles in ’61 and remained until the band’s demise in ’70. During those years he literally wrote the rules for pop drumming by providing steady tempos, in-the-pocket feels and hook-laden drum fills for Lennon and McCartney’s timeless material. He has long been a target for critics who complain that his style is too elementary, but simplicity proved to be a virtue in his hands, and became the prototype for every songwriter’s drummer.

Oooh mr Dave Grohl, my favourite drummer after Ringo. ^^ But I do miss Ian Paice, as the person above, and maybe some Tommy Lee too.

Yeah... Ringo, John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Keith Moon. That could be my complete list...

moonie was the feller to bring it to the popular music masses though,in the sixties.it had already been done;indeed if you watch moonie a lot of what he was doing was pure krupa.there have been better drummers than keith moon but he was such an inspiration, and nobody has ever played drums like moonie since (or before for that matter).many have tried, but impossible.genius.

I guess today Keith Moon couldn't get a job as a session drummer, since he wasn't a "technical" drummer. He was a mad genius and my favourite drummer ever.

Dont get me wrong, I love Keith Moon, but I have issues with his controlled chaos. I dont think he could play the same thing twice to be honest. Everytime I hear him or see him its like he improvises everything. Thats cool and all, but that doesnt work for me if I had a band.

You're right, that's what I meant actually. I like listening to Moon when I just want to listen to a drummer. If I want a drummer who does what the song needs, I stay with, say, Ringo.

you're right really,todd-pure chaos is the correct term....moonie could not have played for anyone else except the who, where he fitted absolutely perfectly.when he played with other bands apparantly it was just a mess.

since my last post i have played some of my who albums.....i'd forgotten what an outstanding player keith moon was.absolutely magnificent!!some awsome drum sounds on the who albums, also.i think out of ANY band,if i could choose one act to see live it would have been the who,1969-1971 period.scarily brilliant, outstanding use of dynamics, tight as you like.just brilliant.

like alot of people i've been hearing about the mike myers keith moon biopic movie for a decade
drats, now mike's too old to play keith
-
i think it's an unlevel playing field judging these drummers due to recording technologies and trends
with all new music (especially since hiphop) the beat is wayyy up in the mix. it usually gets the highest volume and every drum (or button as the case is now) is recorded on it's own track etc etc
-
when you listen to old who -> the drums are so low and muddy in the mix you can't really get the full effect
-
and that goes double likewise for big band music

I agree with this entire post. I was spinning some Who last night at work on the ipod and he's definately fun to listen to. A live show in the 69'-71' period would be perfect too.

I just got Led Zeppelin's "Coda" and there is a track titled "Bonzo's Montreux"

Bonham was an excellent drummer. His son ain't too bad either.

Bonham is just about perfect in my opinion. If I had to pick a drummer for my band, he would be the drummer hands down. I dont have enough good things to say about his drumming.

Jason is indeed a fantastic drummer also.

yeah, agreed.although bonzo is not quite my favourite player,he did have the whole lot sewn up.dynamics, power, subtlety when needed, chops, agression, the sound, everything.not long ago roger taylor (queen) summed bonzo up on a documentary......"yes,he was the best player.basically he could do things the rest of us couldn't do."you do not get voted the best rock drummer of all time year after year for nothing.just the best.....enough said.

rock drumming?
bonzo for sure
moon
..
mitch mitchell - agile and cuts like a chisel
charlie watts - an understated anchor
stewart copeland - thoughtful world beat percision
but to you drummers i'm curious,
what do you think of the drummer from the steve miller band?
pretty straightforward and direct but... damn... he suits the tune and his beats always rock !

all those guys were/are great.the guy who plays for steve miller is a fine, fine player also.lots of people do not realise it takes more than picking up sticks and hitting drums to be able to hold it down at a good level.it's the easiest instrument to get a sound out of-and the hardest to be any good at.you'll never master it.

Gary Mallaber is who I think your talking about (Steve Miller had a lot of drummers). He played on most of the hits. His groove on 'Swingtown' is amazing. He was was warming up one day with that groove before recording and Steve liked it so well he wrote a song around it.

I like all drummers. Seriously, there isnt one I dislike. I just watched a documentary on the White Stripes the other day, and I payed special attention to Meg White (heads out of the gutter please). She gets slammed all the time for being maybe the worst drummer to ever make it. Regardless of her skill level, I challenge any drummer to sit down and follow her through an entire album. Sounds simple right? Its not. Its a level in frustration. Not one fill through an entire album. Its painstaking. The energy level builds in a song and your ready to unleash something, but you cant because she doesnt. You have to hold back. Its like if your starving and you get to sit down to the biggest dinner you have ever see, yet you cant eat. A study in willpower.

Yes GO, the drums are the easiest instrument to get noise from, but a proper noise is something different altogether. You can never master it.

A couple other drummers that I think deserve a mention, but are sadly overlooked all the time are -

Dennis Elliot of Foreigner. He played some great drums on the first three albums. Really good rock drummer.

Myron Grombacher from Pat Benatar. If you can look past his antics behind the kit, he's a pleasure to listen to. I still think the snare sound in 'Heartbreaker' might be the greatest snare in a popular rock song.

Paul Delong from Kim Mitchell. Great drummer that flies under the radar for the most part.

i agree todd,i think for the most part it's a 'drummer thing' to show other players respect, and to appreciate their playing.you don't get it a lot from guitarists, that's for sure.some of the players you mentioned in your second post i haven't even heard of,but i am familiar with the playing of the feller from foreigner, and he has some lovely chops going on.i know a couple of pat benatar songs, but paul delong is a new one on me.if i may throw a couple of names into the mix...............

Bobby Elliot....The Hollies.lovely player with a great jazz touch, still doing the business today.

Mick Tucker....The Sweet.what a great pop/rock player,amazing chops and very overlooked....R.I.P Mick

another guy who never gets the recognition is Roger Taylor from Queen.big big playing from a small bloke.

my last mention is for Chris Sharrock...The La's,Lightning Seeds,Robbie Williams,Oasis,Beady Eye.very moon like antics, but the playing is very much there.excellent.

so,the man at the back.the guy everyone turns their back on.the guy who steers the ship, night after night.if he gets it right,no-one remembers.if he gets it wrong,no-one forgets.

Yes and yes. Totally agree with those two.

Isnt that the truth. When we mess up, its right there for all the world to hear. Other instruments can hide most of the times.

when we mess up the whole song gets messed up.any other instrument messes up,then things carry on as if nothing has happened.you build anything on solid foundations...poor drummer, poor band.it is THE one instrument you cannot fake or carry in your band.

Hey, i'll be the first to agree with you. Maybe because I can relate. I'm the worship drummer in my church. We practice the seven songs a half hour before service starts and the worship leader is guarenteed to change the songs up at least three times before we start. I try to tell them we need to run through those changes, but they just blow me off and say that it'll be fine and nobody will notice. I tell them that if the song breaks down, i'm the one that looks like a fool. In the year and half i've been doing it, we havent had a train wreck yet (knock on wood), but they dont understand.

If the guitar playesrs screw up, its covered by the other guitars, organ, piano, etc,,,. When I screw up its right there for everyone to see. plus it throughs the bass player off. I dont know, its a difficult instrumet to play and a lot of people dont realize it.

I'm also thinking (always) of Joe Morello, Jim Chapin and whoever the drummers are for Steely Dan.  There's a ton of drummers I don't know the names of.  Listen to the beat in Funky Drummer by James Brown.  The drummer for the Bad Plus as well.  And the drummer no one seems to remember - Sandy Nelson.  I've always loved "Let there be drums."

I don't know how they figure out all those nifty patterns out but they really create major grooves.  I mean any major dude will tell you this (I'm not one of them; I'm just a flea enjoying the circus).

Just a note:  some natural untutored drummers seem to find their way around the set quite nicely (John Bonham, e.g.)  Yet they're not technically trained.

One more thought:  I wonder how Ringo would do with other bands and other music genres.  Could he do jazz, like Brubeck's Take Five, for example?  I recall in a Ringo interview that he said George asked him to play 7/8 once.  Ringo didn't understand time signatures but he figured it out.  He said he just counted it and got the feel of it.

I also recall Paul saying "our drummer can't play in 5/4."  Well, I wonder about that.  I bet Ringo could - unless this is factually based and he actually failed to play it for Paul.  Does any know if the Beatles did any songs in 5/4?

By the way, can you play Steve Gadd's intro to "50 ways to lose your lover" by Paul Simon?  It sounds deceptively simple - but try it once.  I'm asking as a guy who used to play drums years ago who is still greatly interested in drumming.  Well, I sure couldn't play it, can you?  Also, I live in an apartment so I can't make noise that disturbs my neighbors.  I can't afford an electronic set and I don't have room for one anyway because my apartment is maximally cramped and cluttered.

Thanks, tkitna, for your comments and related posts.  Appreciate it.

I used to play it, but its been awhile.  I dont play it right though.  I use alternating triplets.  It sounds good, but its not technically correct.

Middle part of 'Dont Let Me Down' is in 5/4.

Wow, tkitna!!  How did you know that?  You must be quite musically astute to have detected that time signature.  I honestly wouldn't know what time signature any song is in - no matter how simple.  I tried to learn the concepts but stumbled when the instructor was trying to explain 3/4, 6/8 and even cut time.  Wasn't there a 12/8, too?  And Frank Zappa invented a crazy ton of them cuz he liked to experiment so much. Also, I never understood the idea of alternating signatures in the same song or even synchronized alternate signatures in jazz, etc.   Anyway, the triplet approach to doing 50 Ways sounds pretty good.  It sort of has the feel of it.  Thanks for the info.

I'd like to remember a couple of drummers who are rarely mentioned, but I've always enjoyed: Mike Clarke from the Byrds; and Hugh Grundy from the Zombies. I think both had a Ringo-like style, doing what the song actually needs.

Love the Rascals.

Me too, Todd!  And they were a local group from New Jersey.  I saw them in person when they performed on The United Cerebral Palsy Telethon in 1967.  They didn't need to promote themselves already having a few hits but they came on in the middle of the night to liven things up.  They were friendly and didn't hesitate to talk with us between television feeds.  It was unbelievable how they could make a single guitar and an organ sound so full.

Thanks Barry.  The first drum set I ever bought was a used set of Rogers that were white and had black stripes on them making them look like Alex Van Halens kit.  They came with a couple roto toms that I used when I played Van Halen stuff.  I always thought Alex was a very good drummer, but I didnt like his over use of the cymbals.  Just way too much.

On another note, I caused a trainwreck at church today.  We have a new guitar player playing with us and he's really technically good, but is a horrible time keeper, so I was asked to count off before every song or start playing the groove so everybody could fall in.  Well we just got done playing 'Victors Crown' and its a show stopper that kicks.  After the song was over we went into a slower song in 6/8.  I just could not feel it and my groove was all wrong.  Took the band 2 verses before we got on track.  It was bad.

Don't fret, Todd.  We all have days like that.  Next Sunday you'll be a metronome.  ;)

What's the story behind the fire extinguisher on Alex Van Halen's kit?

The fire extinguishers were just for visuals.  They had no real purpose.

Here's the black striped design that my used set of Rogers were decorated like by the previous owner.

People would look at that kit and ask if I was a huge Van Halen fan.  They looked shocked when I told them I couldnt stand them.  Lol.

Todd, just out of interest, could you post a list of say, your top 10 drumming performances in pop/rock history? Not live stuff just from studio recordings    Cheers TIA
Title: Re: 50 Most Important Drummers Of All Time
Post by: tkitna on March 07, 2020, 05:26:27 AM
I would love to.  I'm just going to go with songs that I really like and respect from a drumming aspect rather than trying to come up with the 10 best.  This is going to be hard, so let me get at it.

No particular order

Aja - Steely Dan (Steve Gadd)
Rosanna - Toto (Jeff Porcaro)
The Real Me - The Who (Keith Moon)
Fool In The Rain - Led Zeppelin (John Bonham)
Goin Down - Monkees (Eddie Hoh)
Ballad Of Billy The Kid - Billy Joel (Ron Tutt)
Burn Down The Mission - Elton John (Nigel Olson)
Lessons - Rush (Neil Peart)
Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic - Police (Stewart Copeland)
Heart Of The Sunrise - Yes (Bill Bruford)
Inca Roads - Frank Zappa (Chester Thompson)
Make Me Smile - Chicago (Danny Serafine)
Nothing Is Easy - Jethro Tull (Clive Bunker)
Burn - Deep Purple (Ian Paice)
More Today Than Yesterday - Spiral Staircase (Vinnie Parello)
Little Old Lady From Pasadena - Jan & Dean (Earl Palmer)
Love Will Keep Us Together - Captain and Tennille (Hal Blaine)
Call Me - Blondie (Clem Burke)

etc,,,,,I'm on a conference call at work and my list doesn't look good enough to me at the moment, but I just thought of those off the top of my head.  I know I'm missing a million that should have been listed but I'm distracted.  Like I said earlier, those are just some songs I like and not necessarily the best, but I like them for different reasons.  Example - the 'More Today Than Yesterday' doesn't seem like a great drumming song, but concentrate just on the drummer and that guy is doing things with one bass foot that is just amazing.  Others on the list have grooves while others have speed and so forth.  Steely Dan and Zappa is kind of cheating as they both had a million drummers and a million different examples, but those were just a couple I picked.  I'll come back to this tomorrow sometime after I slept.

Hey that’s awesome, Todd!   I actually haven’t heard of a few of the lower parts of the list but I’ll check some out on YT.

Love Will Keep Us Together is one of the best songs of the 70’s; just crafted so well and the bass and drums are exquisite.

Some of my fave non Beatle drumming:
Won’t Get Fooled Again by Moonie and the Who - Behind Blue Eyes great too when the drums kick in

I love Charlie Watt’s drumming in the great Stones classics but a lot of their ‘lesser’ known stuff like Hand Of Fate and Doo Doo Doo Heartbreaker Charlie is fine form.

I’m sort of picking out good drums by my fave bands here : The Rover by Zep is classic Bonzo.

Other various random fave drumming in songs would be:
Interstate State Love Song by STP
Coma by GNR
Don Henley’s work on a few Eagles tunes good too

Nice little list there Stevie.  I love the Rover too.  It was the first Zeppelin tune I ever learned how to play.  I like the drumming on 'Interstate Love Song' too.  Great song.  Henley was always tasteful with his playing although I always hated the sound of his drums. 'Coma' i'm not familiar with.  Probably Matt Sorum I would imagine.

Just sitting here, I thought of a couple other tunes from the 80's that I love drumming wise.

Love Tony Thompson on this one.

Phil Collins and that groove

This is 1978 of course, but I like this one too.

Hey nice Todd!  Some great drum tunes there.  I was trying to think of other songs I like the drumming in but I couldn’t focus on particular ones lol.

On a completely different topic  roll:) and being an amateur bass dude -

Do you think that Bill Wyman is massively underrated by music fans when the lists of the bass greats are mentioned?  I think he is!!!  But he - and Charlie - are the backbone of a lot of the Stones classics. He very rarely gets mentioned.  It’s actually ridiculous

Weird.  Was just talking about Wyman the other night with my buddy while listening to Goats Head Soup. Great player.  He might be a bit underrated as he is rarely mentioned among the great bassists, but I think its more of an issue with the other band members commanding all the attention as i'be never heard anybody talk bad about him.  Anyways, he's an awesome player.
Title: Re: 50 Most Important Drummers Of All Time

Yeah good points Todd. I feel perhaps he is taken for granted?  Because he didn’t have the persona of Macca or Entwistle or JPJ to name some contemps of his.  Like if you googled a list of the top bassists or bass songs, I bet Bill ain’t talked about nor many of his songs.  It’s been a rant of mine for years.

Here we go!  Check this out! Number 46 in this top 50.  I have never heard of half these guys.  It’s pathetic lol

Hmm I guess a bit of a knock on him is that Keef played bass on some of their bigger tunes as Bill got tired of waiting in the studio for Keef to turn up lol.

Bill doesn’t get a lot of attention. He’s to bassists a bit like what Ringo was to drummers, overshadowed by the flashier players of the sixties. Personality wise he never put himself forward either. Even after you’ve mentioned him my first thought of him is as rock solid, creating that tight rhythm section with Charlie to compensate for Keith’s looser guitar, rather than innovative or standout in his playing. Which is probably inaccurate. I’d be interested if there’s particular bass lines of his you think are particularly good and I’ll give them a listen.

Monkey Man is my favorite Stones tune and he does a great job on that.  Sway is pretty good too.  Undercover Of The Night is another.  He's a good player.

Yeah Monkey Man is a classic.

MM, my fave bass song’s of Bills are quite basic but so effective: Wild Horses, Rocks Off, Hot Stuff.  My current fave Stones song - and I only recently realised how good it was - is Hand Of Fate from the 1976 Black And Blue album.  Listen to it loud on headphones and it’s a just kickass rocker with Bill and Charlie locked intightly as usual, Keef’s simple but awesome riff and two great solos by Wayne Perkins who was ‘auditioning’ for the job that eventually went to Woody.  A underrated Stones song except by the diehard fans

Lol I should’ve started a thread for Bill!! ;D

I put on some stones last night including the above songs. Turned the bass up. Yep no doubt a good player was Bill.  Probably doesn’t get the notice he deserves.

I recall now reading Bills interview in Guitar Player back in the late 70s. From memory he had that odd playing style (holding the neck at a very high angle) because he had small hands. He also always used a short neck bass. He was pretty self deprecating.  He mentioned seeing some guy at a local festival playing some amazing bass and wondering what a guy like that would think of him.

I previously mentioned Honey Lantree, not because she was a great drummer, but because she can be considered an important drummer.  She was probably the first professional female drummer.

Moe Tucker is another important female drummer...

Bringing up female drummers got me to remember Hannah Ford.  I used to BS with her on the DrummerCafe forum years ago when she was young.  At the time, she was taking some lessons from Danny Serafine (Chicagos drummer) and was just getting started in her career.  Now shes married and has played at and with some cool people.  DrummerCafe used to be pretty awesome.  I used to shoot the sh*t with some cool drummers including Jon 'Bermuda' Schwartz from Weird Al and Chris Whitten from Edie Brickell and Paul McCartney fame but now theres not much traffic over there.

Here's a little video from Hannah.

Karen played drums on The Carpenters' first album, Ticket To Ride, and on their second album, Now And Then with the exception of one track.

She spent many hours a day for years, at first developing her drumming skills, and later developing her vocal skills.
