yeah i really do like that song
watched that woodstock clip a whole bunch of times since you posted
he misses part of the first chorus which kind of makes the song better to me....
the time signature or meter of the song is really unusual and that missed lyric adds to the uniqueness
-
if i'm to believe youtube comments, john sebastion was a last minute decision to peform that day and kind of unpracticed
-
as i said - the live slade version is my second favorite so far - definitely worth watching! i'd never known any slade till now. really good stuff
-
as far as that lovin /darlinbehomesoon clip...it may be from ed sullivan
alot of people were utube commenting on the guitarist zal who gets a little annoying with his ham-iash antics goofing around mouthing the words etc
kind of wacky folk/hippie-ish freak like behavior youd expect....
arguabley detracts from the clip , ,
some people commented that he intentionally was protesting the soft direction the group was going in ... away from the jug bands roots
--
-
went on to read that zal got busted for pot and turned in his supplier to avoid getting deported to canada
after he became a snitch everyone in the music business shunned him and appartently it played a major role in the lovin spoonful's dissolution

Summer In The City was #1 on The Billboard Hot 100 that summer.

They had a #2 hit a few months before with Daydream...

do you believe in magic DOES have a motown groove
summer in the city could pass for blood sweat and tears!
daydream sounds like the turtles or munjo jerry
and darlin be home soon could pass for the association!

A half-million people can be a bit distracting, I guess.  But yes, that's what made his solo performance at Woodstock memorable.

That was Zal, always the clown.

Yes, The Lovin' Spoonful was folk, folk-rock, jug band, and Country & Western.  John Sebastian described their styles as "good-time music."

You Didn't Have To Be So Nice was my favorite.  When I saw John Sebastian playing the autoharp on that one, I knew I had to get me one of those.

I mean what other group featured an autoharp player?  It was neat how he rested his head against the instrument and swayed as he strummed the bridge.

It's an easy instrument to learn.  There were even instructional videos with John Sebastian put out by Homespun Tapes...

...and today they're on DVD.

=
let me get this straight -
this is mr. antiestablishment folk counterculture hippie
son of a radical left wing political cartoonist in canada
went to live on a kibbutz in israel
=
and u step in one small puddle and turn into a snitch
=
=
sorry HG - he may play guitar good or yuck it up onstage
but plenty of people have no respect for a move like that
and in fact this canadian man was run out of the the music business in shame

Unfortunately, that's how he'll be remembered, nyfan.  He was already ill when he was honored in that clip.  You can see that all that silliness was gone.  It was a poignant moment.

You can easily do that with an autoharp.  I don't know what the problem was with these Hullabaloo dancers...

Lovin Spoonful - Do You Believe In Magic

...but these Hollywood a Go Go dancers knew how to get it on...

Younger Girl didn't make the Hot 100 in 1965

Younger Girl - Lovin' Spoonful

Maybe it was the autoharp.   ;D

But The Critters had a hit with it in 1966...

Younger Girl - Critters

...go figure!

Oh yeah, just remembered, I can play Younger Girl on the autoharp too.  I gotta dust that thing off.  My repertoire is bigger than I thought.

A sad song from 1966...

Didn't Want To Have To Do It- The Lovin Spoonful- 1966

Cass Elliot recorded it too...

Cass Elliot & The Lovin Spoonfull - Didn't want to have to do it (The video's owner prevents external embedding)

I think it was one of the first songs John Sebastian wrote.
