Title: Life Quotes
Post by: Brynjar on January 28, 2014, 09:21:16 AM
Do you have any favourites?

Here are couple of mine:

“Opportunity is missed by most people, because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.” - Thomas Edison

“It doesn't matter to me if a man is from Harvard or Sing Sing. We hire the man, not his history.” - Henry Ford

“Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes.” - Oscar Wilde

"Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." - Confucius

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." - Theodore Roosevelt

"I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying." - Michael Jordan

"I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed." - Michael Jordan

Oh what a wonderful thread!

I like "Always reach for the moon, because if you don't quite reach - you will fall among the stars"

"Don't take life seriously, you will never get out of it alive" - excuse the pessimism

"If you have to ask...the answer is no"

I said that's life
(That's life)
And as funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks stomping on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down
'Cause this fine old world, it keeps spinnin' around

I've been a puppet, a pauper, a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king
I've been up and down and over and out and I know one thing
Each time I find myself flat on my face
I pick myself up and get back in the race

Believe it or not I thought of this very one earlier when I was racking my brain for something to add here. What are the odds?

"Experience is a comb that life gives to you when you have become bald." - Ringo Bonavena

Ringo Bonavena (his real name was Oscar, but the name Ringo was actually given after the Beatles drummer) was a famous Argentinian boxer. He was killed in USA in 1976. Here he's fighting against Muhammad Ali in 1970:

This is one of my favorites; I've seen it in catalogs as a framed print. The author is a 12-year-old girl:

"No boy is worth crying over, and the one who is won't make you cry."

....was just thinking, you could switch "boy" to "girl" and it would be just as true (IMO).

This was printed in the program for my uncle's memorial service on Sunday:

This perfectly expresses how I feel about music. The fact that it came from the man who wrote the lyrics to all the songs in The Wizard of Oz makes it even better. It's like one last gift from my uncle.

I think that.....'And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make'.....is pretty good.

Also, the guru figure at the end of The Monkees' film 'Head' (made in '68) came out with:
'The tragedy of your generation, my young friends, is that you may get exactly what you want.'

How prescient is that?
To give just one example the legalization of pot (or certainly the acceptance of its casual use) has resulted in a whole lot of glazed-looking consumers as far as I can see. Just watch one episode of the 'Jeremy Kyle Show' for the evidence!

Apologies to the forum; I felt the need to re-post this given my strong feelings about it. During the worst times of my life, my family (except my kids, but I try not to lean on them because of their youth) has never been there for me. My true friends have.

And we will continue to be here. You are doing the right thing for your kids. I was "leaned on" as a teenager and the older I get the more I realize that I was a really anxious kid a lot of the time because of it.

Thanks, Kelley and Barry. Last night was just tough. Having trouble with a particular family member (my sister) who has been holding a years-long grudge even after I have apologized twice for my actions. Thank goodness I have some great friends here in ND, and on this forum, to hold me up when things get so horrible.

I should let my sister's unkind behavior just roll off my back, but I haven't mastered that yet.

I think you've done all that you can. It's up to her now. But if I had the chance to talk to her I would tell her why holding a grudge against a sibling is one of the worst mistakes a person can ever make.

Somebody where I used to work actually used this in her company email signature.  Needless to say, that didn't last long.

"Don't sweat the petty stuff, and don't pet the sweaty stuff."

The quote or her employment?  ;)

Conan Breaks His Silence On Losing ‘The Tonight Show’… And Says Exactly What Needs to Be Said.

Conan O’Brien tells graduates at Dartmouth what he learned in the wake of being ousted from “The Tonight Show.” While his entire speech is great, we jumped to the words of wisdom at 17:25…

I Googled this and noted that it has been attributed to dozens of individuals (e.g., Buddha, Nelson Mandela, AA, etc.)

I like that. Speaking of quote attributing, I just saw something really nice on Facebook, attributed to Mother Teresa. I looked it up on quote investigator.com and it turns out it was a college kid in 1968 who wrote it! That bugs me but people don't seem to like it if you point that sort of thing out. LOL

I live anywhere, all the time, between the mid-50s and the mid-60s.
I'm not depressed. Really, not even slightly.

Found myself in London last month, a whole load of people there, presumably all living 'in the present', looked profoundly depressed.

That geezer with the funny name was talking b---- cks!

Kelley, I somehow missed your post. What was the quote, if you don't mind sharing it? (And if you'd prefer not to, I certainly understand.)

Another one I like is the (probably overused) "There are three types of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics." I've seen that one attributed to everyone from Mark Twain to Benjamin Disraeli. I can't seem to pin down a definitive source. I should try investigator.com!

I just saw this and I'll be darned if I can remember the quote now. But it was really good; trust me!

Lotta people go through life doing things badly. Racing's important to men who do it well. When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.

I didn't realize it was Elie who said that. I was so very sad to learn of his passing. What an amazing individual he was. RIP.

Pride! Pride tastes awfully good, especially if the crust is flaky and there's meringue on top.
