This will test your Beatle knowledge.

It was 40 years ago in 1964, and the Beatles occupied 20 spots in the Billboard 100 -- including the Number One, Two, Three, Four and Five songs. A feat never before accomplished or anywhere near matched.

Three questions.

1. Name the top five songs from that Billboard chart listing, in descending order (#5, 4, 3, 2, 1). If you want a hint, only of those songs did NOT contain a personal pronoun in the title (me, she, you, I, etc.). The other four did. Anyway, name those top five songs at that time:

2. Of those five songs, two of them never charted to the #1 slot. They came close, but fell just a bit short. Name those two songs.

3. Finally, those five songs were recorded on four separate labels. Obviously Capitol Records is one of the four labels; name the other three.

Bonus: There were 15 other Beatle songs in the top 100 at that time; extra points if you can name at least five of them.

ALMOST ALL CORRECT, THOUGH THIS DOES DEPEND ON THE SOURCE OF INFORMATION.  MOST INFO SOURCES SAY THAT THOUGH THE BEATLES USED VEEJAY TO RELEASE THEIR FIRST US ALBUM -- INTRODUCING THE BEATLES -- NO #1 SINGLES HAD APPEARED ON THAT LABEL. (IN THE UK: THE ALBUM WAS PLEASE, PLEASE ME ON PARLAPHONE.) AGAIN, THE ISSUE OF VEEJAY IS A BIT DEBATEABLE, BUT INSTEAD OF VEEJAY, THE ANSWER APPEARS TO BE PARLAPHONE, WHICH "TWIST AND SHOUT" AND "PLEASE, PLEASE ME" HAD APPEARED ON WHEN RELEASED AS 45s.  BUT YES, ON TOLLIE AND SWAN.  IN FACT, WITH SWAN, THAT LABEL HAD ACTUALLY REPLACED VEEJAY AS THE BEATLES LABEL BEFORE CAPITOL FINALLY SMARTENED UP AFTER REJECTING FOUR BEATLE HITS, INCLUDING SHE LOVES YOU.  ONCE CAPITOL SAW THE LIGHT OF DAY, WE SEE THE US ALBUM MEET THE BEATLES.  SO, RICKENBACKER, VERY IMPRESSIVE INDEED.

AS A SIDE NOTE, FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE TO COUNT SUCH THINGS:  BETWEEN 1962-1970, THE BEATLES RELEASED 221 INDIVIDUAL TRACKS ON 19 US ALBUMS (14 UK), AS WELL AS 39 SINGLES (24 UK).  TOTAL BEATLE ALBUM SALES TO DATE SUPRASS 1.3 BILLION.

AND ONE MORE LITTLE HISTORY FACTOID ABOUT BILLBOARD -- MADONNA, ELVIS AND THE BEATLES HOLD THE MAJORITY OF IMPORTANT BILLBOARD RECORDS, WITH THE MOST TOP FIVE, TOP 10 & TOP 20 HOT 100 IN BILLBOARD HISTORY. BRITNEY AND THE BOY BANDS WILL NEVER EQUAL THAT.  WANT SPECIFICS.  HOW ABOUT THE FACT THAT THE BEATLES SPENT THE HIGHEST NUMBER OF WEEKS AT NUMBER IN THE ALBUMS CHART (132 US & 174 UK).

Sure, I can provide a couple -- notably "Yellow Submarine" and "Eleanor Rigby" as a famous Double-A single.  Another is "Come Together" and "Something".  All four tracked to Billboard's #1 slot.

That said, the most famous Double-A single was "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields," though only Penny tracked to #1. 

Unless I'm mistaken (and I could be), I believe those are the only three Double As, and obviously, they were all huge -- five #1s on three 45 discs.

Thanks Larry for such a great posting! Got any more like that ? I just got LUCKY, there are more knowledgeable Beatle-o-philes here than me. That was a lot of fun! On the third question I was thinking of American release's. Parlophone never occured to me since it was Their Uk label. Were Billboard charts recognized In the UK at that time as they were in the USA?

No, Billboard was not used over here. There was more than one chart in those days though but the main one was the New Musical Express chart.
