Looking at the pics of Paul under the Paul McCartney bass sticky thread, it seems he holds his hand as if using a pick (especially with the Hofner), but it looks to me as if he's using his whole thumb and thumbnail as a pick.
The one pic of him with the Rickenbacker doesn't show his left hand but I'd go with Apps how could you play the lines like "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" with a pick?
I vote no pick.

I always take massive inspiration off when Paul uses his pincer like hand right up at the edge of the neck, plucking over the top pickup - I think he might just do this on the Love Me do (?) Video or Twist & Shout video (?) - not sure - I would have to check - but you guys know what I mean
