Title: Drums
Post by: nimrod on September 08, 2021, 12:53:58 AM
Who do you like ?

I love this clip from the Dave Brubeck Take 5 song 1964.
At 4:40 (Drum solo) you can see where modern Rock drummers got ideas from. This guy is technically perfect. Pure class imo.

I’m not a huge fan of drum solos. But that was cool. I like how he built it up.

Such a different style in those days. The drummer looks like he needs to rush back after lunch to resume his accounting job. And Brubeck looks like a professor grading his performance.

Haha

They wore suits I believe because Jazz is a serious subject. You have to be technically perfect to play it well (similar to classical).

And, out of respect to their audience, I believe Brian tried to instill this into the early Beatles

When I used to read Guitar Player magazine they had a regular column by Barney Kessel the jazz guitarist. He was very old school and was pretty disparaging of the new fangled rock world. He used to complain about musicians not cleaning their shoes. To me, as a late teen at the time, it was a bit weird, like a grumpy out of touch grandpa. But now I can sort of see where he was coming from.

nimrod:  Thanks for posting that video.  It's one of the best I've seen over the years.  I love the fullness of the superb sound quality.

It is clear that Mr. Brubeck is improvising and using subtle dynamics and empty spaces to create very interesting effects on the piano.  I like how his left hand plays an odd sort of dark accompaniment in contrast to a rather bright right hand composition.  I think he could hear the reverberation on the dark side of the notes.  He definitely wasn't playing a cover of his song.

Mr. Morello's cymbal playing really adds sort of a windy open atmosphere which greatly enhances the tune.  He seems to have perfect time (kind of like a human metronome).  I don't know how many drummers consciously think about the time component because I think many are distracted by the flashy stuff like rolls, accents, and fills (as well as cymbal crashes).  Having perfect time is a special gift.  If you have it, you may not at all be aware of it.  Only astute listeners will pick up on it.  Some will simply appreciate the song more but not necessarily know why they do.

That ride pattern which opens the tune is simply magical.  It looks like the sticks are playing all by themselves.

No, Jazz is not easy to play.  IMO you have to be really good and technically trained.  You need to know as much about music as you possibly can.  Yes, people will always disagree over matters of education and formal training but I'd rather have a surgeon operate on me who has credentials than one who taught himself how to do surgery.

I wish I could have remained a drummer as I got older but life's circumstances dictated what I could and had to devote my time to.

To the World:  You missed out on hearing a great drummer, None other than the Great Loco Mo!   Sigh - well, at least you had the Beatles and tkitna for that matter!

The way Brubeck plays reminds me of the brilliant Thelonius Monk, check him out if you enjoyed this, His most famous song is Round Midnight.
I agree with all your points Loco :) Id love to hear you drumming  icon_good

Thanks for posting these videos, tkitna.  So far, I've listened to the first one with Steve Smith and Todd Sucherman.  I will listen again for I don't know how many times.  I really enjoyed how they did their drum duet.  There were times when it felt like they were playing in unison.  I think they were playing in 6/4 time.  That's probably why the solos sounded so solid and connected.  I also noticed how Steve watched Todd playing.  He was smiling but I also think he realized he could play whatever Todd played.  So, there's a lot of mutual respect there that probably enhances their ability to perform together.

I'm sorry you've been stick-less for 5 years now.  I have the impression you were a good drummer.  But, I know sometimes Life has other plans.

nimrod:  I think the only way you'll ever hear me drumming is if you enter a time machine and find me somewhere in the sixties.  I was still developing and studying my percussive craft.  It'd be tough to go back considering the finite bank of time I'm dealing with now.  And I don't think my drumming would scare off the Grim Reaper either.

I know the feeling, I was playing Bass in a band up to covid, just a covers band, we did our last gig, at a club New Years eve 2019, then I went on a cruise till Feb, came back and that was that, covid. The band has now finished, due mainly to no gigs. Im wondering if that is it now for bands for me, Im getting a bit long in the tooth for it.

Compared to Ringo, Paul, Mick, Bob etc you’re still a spring chicken!

I'm confident you'll get back to it at some point Kev.  For me, I just have no motivation to play anymore.  Life has me going in other directions right now and I truly dont feel like finding new people to play with much less lugging drums around at this point.  I'll get the itch again, but who knows when that will be.

Todd has mentioned many of the greats.  I'd like to add Gene Krupa, the founding father of the modern drum set...

Sing Sing Sing

From the movie Hollywood Hotel   1938

Live At The Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert   16 January 1938

Gene Krupa kept that beat going for over 12 minutes and became immortal.

In 1978, Eugene Bertram Krupa became the very first drummer to be inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame.
