Ringo Starr's birthplace to be demolished
The former home of former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr has been earmarked for demolition by Liverpool City Council.
The terraced house in Madryn Street, Liverpool, was Starr's birthplace, and his home for the first three months of his life. Although it was previously thought that the house may gain a reprieve following a public consultation, it will now join a further 459 properties which are due to be knocked down as part of a regeneration project in the area.
The news follows an announcement by The National Trust, in February of this year, that the former home of Ringo's fellow Beatles member John Lennon would be preserved and opened to the public .
The decision to demolish Starr's birthplace was reportedly based on the fact that the drummer only lived at the property for a very short period. Flo Lucas, a spokesperson for Liverpool City Council's Housing Select Committee, told BBC News: "Ringo Starr lived in the Madryn Street house for about three months. John Lennon and Paul McCartney's childhood homes were preseved because they spent a significant part of their lives in them. The house on Madryn Street has no historical significance".
Starr himself was eager to save the houses, and speaking earlier this year said: "Why are they knocking them down ? If it's economically viable, they should do them up." However, Liverpool City Council is expected to ratify the demolition decision on September 16.
