Title: Tommy Moore
Post by: andaludia on December 19, 2004, 04:49:16 PM
Hey why no mention of Tommy Moore. Tommy played in the band for a while and was regarded by George as the best drummer they ever had. Tommy was a friend of my fathers and i knew him well,he was like an uncle to me and such a nice bloke. sadly Tommy passed away in September 1981.

do any members know or wish to post about Tommy??thanks Tony.

yes tommy moore was there.
he was older than the other three.he was 25 when he joined.he was a docks worker.that drove a fork lift i recall.
wasn't his girl friend always on him to quit because he made no money playing with the guys???he was also unreliable they said.often late to shows if he even showed.
i am not trying to degrade him just relate what my conception of him is.its probally biased.it comes only from what i have read.you have shone a new light on tommy.please carry on.....

I am no Beatles expert,i like the music and being from their home town the interests are all around.I also Once lived in Arnold Grove and if any off you have ever visited Liverpool and took a photo of George`s old house then you would have stood outside my old house to take it.i also once had a flat in Faulkner street next to where John and Cynthia first lived together. i know a few people who work on the Beatles tours in Liverpool and would be happy to answer anyone`s Questions about places in Liverpool, just PM me or write in the general boards and i will try to answer.but remember i am no expert.

Right now Tommy Moore. Well Tommy worked in Standards bottle works in garston and he did drive a forklift.(my father worked with him there)he had a flat in Smithdown Lane with his girlfriend.Tommy said she suffered depression and was violent on occasions and would tell The Beatles to F#*' off if ever they met.He said himself He could not always turn up at gigs due to the arguments. He was not bitter that he left the band and was a big fan.he took me to my first Beatle convention and would tell me stories about the lads.Tommy later married another girl and had a daughter called Claire.he divorced and lived in the Belle Vale area of liverpool. This is when i got to know him better and he really was a great guy.sadly he died in 1981 and only 11 people came to his funeral.i thought this was very sad.Bob wooler was there and spoke highly of Tommy.

Tommy was only with the Beatles a short time, but he did what most of us have dreamed off.i have read a lot off books and he is not mentioned much and this is why i wanted to put him up on your forum. He played the drums for a while with The Beatles and i believe he deserves a mention for that.so thanks for letting me write about my old friend Tommy on your forum.

Feel free to ask any questions..Thanks again Tony.

I've often wondered what's become of some the people that were present during the Beatles early years. I'm sorry to find out that tommy  passed away.   Your knowing him and  being so close gives us Beatle fans a more personal insight into Tommys life.

Tommy Moore joined them on the tour to Scotland, backing up Billy Fury. Tommy and Stu were often treated badly by John Lennon's mean remarks. I think one day during the tour the van they were travelling in almost crashed and Tommy got a suitcase in his eye, which turned totally black. John had to laugh about that all that time he looked at him. I think that's another reason why Tommy left. John was bugging him all the time.

MOORE, TOMMY. A Liverpool drummer, he played with the Silver Beatles in 1960. The group had been performing without a drummer as the Quarry Men, but began changing their name and felt they needed someone in the drum seat. After Brian Casser had said that the name the Beatals was no good, they changed it to the Silver Beetles (also Silver Beatles) and, on Casser

I think they are pictures from the Wyvern Club audition, Bill. Compare the backgrounds here on Chazz Avery's excellent site: http://www.beatlesource.com/savage/1960/60.05.10%20larry%20parnes/60.05.10larryparnes.html

You know, when you look at those pictures on the other site, and this is just my observation, wouldn't the FIRST picture look like it would be Tommy Moore? That guy looks like he's about 15 years older than the Beatles. And there is only one picture of him. The others show a much younger kid, and that would fit the description of Hutchinson. I also read Hutchinson was with the Cassanovas? (From the Spitz book).
Title: Re: Tommy Moore

Hi Casbah,
despite the fact that you have read the Spitz book (which is full of errors) I believe you are right. I'm pretty sure this is the Beatles with Tommy Moore, who arrived late for the audition and was temporarily replaced by Johnny Hutchinson.

Actually,

This is the guy I thought was Tommy Moore.  And again, I'm only going by my own opinion and certainly not by any presumption of authority on the matter.

But when I look at this picture, I see a much older man, dressed completely different from the other Beatles.  As you are well aware, these are the two reasons given by Larry Parnes for not liking him.

The kid in the other picture, would seem to be a better fit for a band, more than likely to be a peer of the other guys, although dressed more conservatively...

But I guess until either Tommy or Johnny comes forward to help clear things up, we'll just have to keep guessing  ;D

I believe it is confirmed by several sources that the guy in your picture is Johnny Hutchinson.
Title: Re: Tommy Moore
Post by: Bill Harry on November 03, 2008, 06:59:32 PM
That's definately Johnny Hutch. Brian Epstein wanted him to replace Pete Best in the Beatles and he actually played with them when Pete left and before Ringo joined. The photo was by Cheniston Roland. You note that you can see Stuart and his guitar. You see his hands on it.  Cheniston took a number of photos, there is one which Stuart has been tuning up and has his back to the photographer. Allan Williams used that particular photo to claim that Stuart performed with his back to the audience, which is untrue. You can see from this photo how Allan has tried to manipulate the truth.

Could anybody clear which gigs did REALLY Tommy Moore with The Beatles at the Wirral Peninsula (=Neston Institute and Grosvenor's Ballroom in Liscard) in May-July 1960??

The best source is, of course, Bill Harry but his Encyclopedia is a bit confusing on the subject:

p. 255: "...However, he [Norman Chapman] only managed to appear with them on three Saturday night gigs at the Grosvenor Ballroom, Birkenhead, on 18 and 25 June and 2 July, before he was called up for National Service..."

p. 468: "...Tommy Moore was to make one last appearance with them at the Grosvenor.
Their 18 June appearance was on the occasion of Paul McCartney's 18th birthday and they returned to the venue on 25 June.
They appeared there several times in July. On their 2 July gig they were joined on stage by Johnny Gentle, whom they'd recently backed on a tour of Scotland. Other dates included 9, 16, 23 and 30 July..."

So,..., who REALLY played drums at those 16 gigs at the Wirral Peninsula in June-July 1960?? ???

Best!! ;)

At least we know of three (=four??):

Tommy Moore, Norman Chapman and Ronnie (=and Paul McCartney??)

Yes, you are right.

However, the very 1st day of Paul using his Solid 7 guitar couldn't be June 30, as that is the date of the HP contract. A deposit was made in advance, with a guarantor, ca. fifteen days before, the same John, George or Stu did (=see Babiuk's receipts...). This would place us ca. Paul's 18th birthday...

Ah! A birthday gift. I like that thought.

Well... Maybe... June 30 is ONLY the date of the HP contract, i.e., when the first weekly payment of -/10/- had to be made. But a deposit had to be made in advance (=probably £3, according to what is stated at Bells catalogues from that time), with a guarantor (=Jim McCartney??), ca. fifteen days before, the same John, George or Stu did (=see Babiuk's receipts for John's Club 40, George's Futurama, Stu's 500/5 or George's Selmer Truvoice...). This would place us ca. Paul's 18th birthday, i.e., the very day when Tommy Moore agreed to play drums with them for the last time (=at Grosvenor Ballroom, BTW...)

Yes: maybe they were drummerless and Paul played drums. Sources (=Bill Harry, Lewisohn...) differ regarding Tommy Moore and Norman Chapman performances.

Nor is clear when did they REALLY backed Janice the Stripper. Until 16 August, when they depart to Hamburg, the timeline is shadowed. And we are in the 50th. anniversary of those historical days!! :(

This is a quote from George Harrison in the Anthology Book.

We had a stream of drummers coming through. After about three of these guys, we ended up with almost a full kit of drums from the bits that they'd left behind, so Paul decided he'd be the drummer. He was quite good at it. At least he seemed OK; probably we were all pretty crap at that point. It only lasted for one gig, but I remember it very well. It was in Upper Parliament Street where a guy called Lord Woodbine owned a strip club. It was in the afternoon, with a few perverts - five or so men in overcoats - and a local stripper. We were brought on as the band to accompany the stripper; Paul on drums, John and me on guitar and Stu on bass.

He says it was AFTER Tommy Moore and Norman Chapman had left. So I'd say somewhere from half July.

Correct...

And Paul said that they wore lilac jackets (http://books.google.com/books?id=pEHNfqJZYTYC&pg=PA24&lpg=PA24&dq=Spanish+dance+troupe+at+Blue+Angel+liverpool+allan+williams&source=web&ots=VJZ3lYw8tm&sig=Qjpc3TUZb_sTD7fp3X4YaZi2BrQ&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=2&ct=result#v=onepage&q&f=false) doubtlessly the same ones they wore at the Indra but NOT at Johnny Gentle tour. Same happens with the stripper they backed at New Cabaret Artists. Allan Williams - William Marshall, The Man Who Gave The Beatles Away, London, Elm Tree, 1975, reads:

p. 87: "...I kept driving away at the fact they had no drummer and there were no other engagements lined up for the next couple of weeks..."

p.  91: "...Paul took over on drums..."

p. 96: "...After the Beatles finished their week backing Shirley* I looked for more work for them. They got a few gigs but the story was always the same: 'When do we get another drummer, Allan?'..."

So, in the beginning they have no gigs for a couple of weeks. When, at this point, did they have no gigs "...for a couple of weeks..."??

Paul took over on drums** but they WANT a drummer. Why?? Because Paul wanted to play guitar?? Or because he had got A new guitar??

Finally they got a few gigs. Which ones??

Too many shadows after finishing Johnny Gentle tour (=28 May) and before departing for Hamburg (=16 August)***...

Xosé

* Allan Williams names this girl Shirley. Why some sources name her Janice??

** According to George Harrison in Anthology book "...We had a stream of drummers coming through. After about three of these guys, we ended up with almost a full kit of drums from the bits that they'd left behind, so Paul decided he'd be the drummer. He was quite good at it. *** Stu's visa is dated 13 August, and one of Paul's payment coupons for the Solid 7 is also dated 13 August...

Allan Williams - William Marshall, op. cit., pp. 134-135:

"...Norman played with the Beatles for about three months, appearing with them several times in the basement of the Jac...
...Poor old Norman was another guy who missed latching on to a million quid by a quirk of fate. His stint with the Beatles enden when he was called up to do his compulsory two years National Service with the First Battalion, King's Regiment...
...'Yeah,' he said, referring to the Beatles, 'those guys really loved the game...Everything they did and said was directed at making their sound better and better day by day. I remember Paul as the dominant figure, not John, oddly enough -although everyone nominates John as the leader.
Maybe it was my interpretation of it. One night when we were playing at the Grosvenor Ballroom over in Wallasey a fight broke out...What a scene. We kept playing the music all the way through. John was hiding behind the curtain and laughing his head off and Paul was somehow crouched under the piano. The music never stoped. What a night'..."

So, Paul was the dominant figure, Norman Chapman really played with them at Grosvenor Ballroom and he played with them for..., three months??  ???

The Allan Williams book is not really known for its reliability. Paul McCartney said to Williams: "Congratulations on the book Allan. Some things in it are actually true." So, I would not rely too much on Williams' version.

Bear in mind that I really do appreciate your research and sharing it here with us. These pre-fame years are of course much harder to research than the years from 1963 onwards.

I love how taken Janice/Shirley was with George!  From Allan Williams' book (excerpted)

"Who is that nice boy with the boney face?" she said on the first night.

"That," I said, "is George.  George Harrison.  He's a nice boy and he is much too young for you, Shirley.  Don't go leading him astray."

"They're never too young," she said, eyeing George, who was trying to hide behind his orange juice.

It would be interesting to know whether she was still alive.  I wonder if anyone ever interviewed her?

This is my first time trying to quote (Xose's remarks).  Hoping I did it correctly.

Cor, this Saturday I'll be at the shop that services my cars. There are a couple of fellows there from Portugal.  I'll ask them to translate the article for us.

I think he's a faster racecar driver than he is a translator, Cor.   ;)

But I'll see him at the shop on Saturday.  I haven't been there in a couple of weeks.  I'm sure he'll have the translation ready.

This Beatle Lives In Poverty

Worse than wanting to be a Beatle in your life, is once being one and then having no chance to continue being one. This is the saying of a broken, weak man and not well-dressed from Liverpool, Tommy Moore.  He is 38 years old and he works in a bottle factory carrying bottles.  He lives regretting the big mistake he made ten years ago.  In 1960, Tommy was the drummer for three boys called John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison.  The band didn’t even have a name and they were playing in a night club called Grosvenor Ballroom, in Wallasey, for $20 per night.  Tommy felt it was just a part-time job and he decided to find a more “secure” job.  He started to carry the carts with the bottles at the factory and today he still regrets that decision.

“I remember that I went to work for The Beatles through an advertisement I saw in a newspaper where Paul and George were looking for a drummer.  I joined the group but it was a tough living in the beginning.   We did get an invitation for a tour in Scotland, a very tiring one, but we only received $25 for that.  I needed something more secure.  I abandoned the hobby of playing drums.  The three boys later came to look for me.  They already were called the Beatles and they showed up in a white Jaguar.  I played for them for two more nights.  But still I couldn’t see any future in that and I decided to quit once for all.”

Tommy Moore, in the words of the manager Alan Williams, who was working with The Beatles at that time, said that “Tommy was a good drummer but maybe a little too old for the band.  He was ten years older and besides he was always unsatisfied with the business.  He always considered it as a side-job.  Now Tommy lives in a small rented apartment on Vronhill Street, Liverpool.  He works 10 hours a day for a small wage and he wishes to return to “show business” and start all over again from the scratch.  While John Lennon drives his well-equipped luxury Mercedes 600, Tommy carries his cart full of bottles, whistling to “Get Back” and other hits by his old friends, and that the only memory they have of him is that he was the only one that never believed in them.

Tommy Moore, married with two children, has memories of the times he played drums for The Beatles (on the left, right after being replaced by Pete Best in the band).  Now, the best he can do is to play drums on a biscuit box (bottom).

Thanks so much Barry. Please say thank you to Carlos too.

Depressing indeed. I feel really sorry for Tommy Moore. From his point of view I can understand his decision tho. The Scotland Tour wasn't very good to say the least. Being his age at that time I can understand his urge to look for something more secure. In hindsight, it is easy to say to regret the decision. At that time, it probably was the right thing to do. Still, very sad. The depressing black and white pictures don't help either.

I found this on another forum. It is a post by andalucia, whom I believe is also a member here.

Tommy Moore who was a Drummer with The Beatles for a while in the early days. I knew Tommy well myself, he worked with my father in Standards bottle works in the garston area of Liverpool.Tommy drove a Forklift truck and was having all kinds of trouble with his girlfriend. this led to him missing gigs as she never wanted him to play in the band. Tommy told me she suffered depression and was violent. he said she once met The Beatles and told them to f*** off.
Tommy later married another girl and had a daughter called Claire. His marriage broke up and this is when i got to know him well. He moved to the Belle Vale area of Liverpool and I would see lots of him. He was never bitter about leaving the band. He had all the albums and would tell me tales about them.He took me to my first Beatles convention and got me really hooked. Sadly Tommy died in September 1981. Only 11 people came to his funeral. Bob Wooler was there and spoke highly of Tommy. I just wanted to write something about Tommy as I dont want him forgotten. He was a great bloke who did so much for me. If any of you have any information about Tommy`s days in the band please post it. I have no photo`s of him and not sure if any exist from when he was in the band.t hanks for reading this everyone, he really was a great bloke
