Title: Your Favourite TV Series
Post by: nimrod on August 01, 2013, 10:30:54 PM
Ive been watching quite a few tv series recently, movies seem to have gone a bit sh*tty, and tv series now regularly have movie actors in them and theyve raised the game , anyway heres my opinions, hope they are of some help.

Dexter - Very well made, I was hooked on it, Im watching the last season now and its gone on too long I think, but the first 4 seasons were great. Loved the Bay Harbour Butcher   ;D

Breaking Bad - My favourite (see my avatar ), great storyline, very well acted, one of the best imo, cant wait to see how it pans out in the last season. 'Nice guy Science teacher with loving wife turns into drug lord because he has terminal cancer and wants to leave his family plenty of money to live on - his intentions are good but it all turns to sh*t, even wifey leaves him' a must watch.

The Newsroom - another one Id recommend, brilliant script, very well acted. Really like this one.

Game Of Thrones - If you like medieval stuff like Knights and armies, Kings & Castles you'll love it, massive cast, great scenery, goes from snow to middle east scenery, yes Im hooked. I even just downloaded the books ;)

Entourage - tried it but it seems aimed at younger people not old farts like me. So i gave it a miss.

Ray Donovan - a new one , were up to episode 4 .....Brilliant, love it, not quite as good as Breaking Bad imo but getting there, it could get better or worse of course, time will tell.

Weeds - not dead keen on this one but you may like it. Skint mother starts selling weed etc. a bit meh imo

The Bridge - another new one, a body cut in half is found on a bridge that links America with Mexico, half the body is American the other half Mexican, so a cop from Texas teams up with a cop from Mexico (male & female) to investigate, obvioulsy illegal people smugglers, drugs are involved, its pretty good so far but not brilliant.

Underbelly - An Australian series based on facts about the underworld, drugs, prostitution etc, very good !

Theres a new one starting on Fox soon called Low Winter Sun which looks good, starring excellent English actor Mark Strong

Ive downloaded 2 seasons of Madmen and 2 seasons of Suits, will let you know what I think (if you so desire )

Oh and Ive been told Rome is good, but you have to like the erm Romans

Heres some more;

Top Of The Lake is in that top 10, I liked it a lot, made in New Zealand, a girl goes missing etc etc, a bit slow but quite 'gripping'

I think all these are on netflix if you want to pay or as torrents if you dont.

PS, nearly forgot, House Of Cards is a remake of the British series (Ian Richardson starred in it,) (his catchphrase was 'you may think so.. I couldnt possibly say) starring Kevin Bacon, thats really good as well, dirty dealings in the White House etc etc

Some of my favorites -

Justified - Timothy Olyphant is a badass in this series. The acting and writing are brilliant. Favorite show for sure.

The Walking Dead - I've read all the comics (still going) and i'm hooked on the show. The show took some liberties and it isnt as good as the books, but its still a good view.

Sons Of Anarchy - Yeah, its a guilty pleasure for me and my wife. We love it.

The Bridge - Its only on its third episode, but its really good. Hoping the momentum continues.

The Americans - Some episodes are incredible and others are blah, but i'll continue to watch.

Here goes.

Hell On Wheels - a dirty, gritty nasty western about the Union Pacific Railroad's quest to reach across the continent.  If you liked Deadwood, you'll like this.

Grimm - a modern take on Grimm's Fairy Tales.  A Portland, Oregon detective discovers he is descended from "Grimms" who hunt and kill supernatural creatures.

Revenge - Total guilty pleasure and not the sort of thing I usually like.  A woman discovers a rich Hampton, Long Island family framed her father for a terrorist act and she enacts her plan to extract revenge.  A bit soap-ish, but I am hooked.

Kevin, Game Of Thrones might be the best TV ever!

I guess I don't whach enough TV.  I've never heard of any the shows mentioned.  About all I watch on TV is Turner Classic Movies, RetroPlex, retro tv, Animal Planet and the SPEED Channel.

Barry you might be better off not watching a lot of TV.  I think I watch too much sometimes, especially sports. But there is no way I listen to too much music!  There is no such thing!  ;D

I mostly watch second-hand TV. If someone else has it on I might sit down but usually I get bored and put my headphones on. I do like to watch Conan O'Brien with my daughter and classic shows when I think of it. And I am determined to give the Buffalo Bills one more chance this season and watch the games. It used to be fun, even when they didn't win the Superbowl! We'll see how long that lasts...

I forgot about Grimm. I've never missed an episode. It might not be the best show, but I like it.

I really only watch PBS, Nova, news, MeTV and a couple of others. I work 2nd shift and am spared the boredom of night time tv. The few I've tried to watch I can't make it through.
I like Svengoolie on Saturday nights but the lineup of movies tend to be a bit lame.

My favourites: Dr. Who (new series), House M.D., Lost, Sherlock, Supernatural, It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Peep Show, Entourage, The Inbetweeners, The Office (US), Arrested Development, Freaks and Geeks, Family Guy, American Dad.

Without much exaggeration, 90% of the people I know watch 'Game Of Thrones', my parents included. It's really, really not my thing, but I'm getting more and more convinced to give it a try. I will sometime.

Not into any contemporary stuff. The only exception being 'Germany's Next Top Model by Heidi Klum' that I watch with the Missus. That's the "passing a train wreck" effect. Can't manage to take your eyes off of it.

We regularly view a bunch of classic series that we have on disk.

I've just finished watching the first 'Dexter' season after a 3-days marathon. It was mind-blowingly intense. I'm stunned really. I still can't believe how good it was.

I want to give props to 'Modern Family', which I've really been into lately. Extremely funny and well-executed comedy series.

But if my opinion isn't worthy enough, perhaps a google search with Sofía Vergara (one of the actresses) will win some of the male members over.  ;D

Modern Family is well done. Genuinely funny but manages heartwarming without sappiness. And yes, Sofia is...attractive.

I have to give props to Big Bang Theory too. Since Seinfeld ended I haven't really got into any of the big US comedies. I do like that one though.

In terms of drama I loved The Wire. Just an all round well done show. I also liked Deadwood although it unfortunately ended a bit abruptly. After watching it my new guiding principle when faced with any problem was - what would Al Swearengen do?

'Seinfeld' is an actual obsession of mine. I must've watched the series at least 4 times (not to mention 3 hours of bloopers). I think it's genius, in every possible way. Have you watched Curb Your Enthusiasm, moog? I highly recommend it if you enjoyed Seinfeld. Larry David writes and acts in it and it's pretty hilarious. Not always in a "laugh-out-loud" way like say, the Kramer scenes were in Seinfeld, but hilarious nevertheless.

Yep Seinfeld at its best was brilliant. I've seen one episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm on a plane. It was cringingly hilarious (it was an episode when a friends daughter was selling cookies at his house when she had her first period. He got a bit too detailed in helping her). I meant to explore it more as i found it very funny. Unfortunately a lack of time and a very poor Internet connection at home has restricted my viewing of late.

St. Elsewhere Season 2

I loved that show! It had an excellent cast and really memorable story lines. I'll never forget Ed Flanders' daring scene! I miss those times, when just about every night had a show that I looked forward to watching. I just wish this was one was available to stream from Netflix.

Currently we watch and record so we don't miss :

The Blacklist - by far our fav
Person of interest - previous fav, fell to second by no fault of its own
Modern Family

For reruns, I will absolutely watch a Seinfeld, Mash, Taxi or Happy Days (pre Scott Bao) if I stumble across them.

Yes, I tended to watch only educational programs when I was growing up. I learned all about the space program and the Middle East from I Dream of Jeannie, the sociological implications of blended families from The Brady Bunch and life during the Stone Age from my favorite, The Flintstones. I also learned that any problem can be solved in a half hour, unless it's really bad then it might take a two or three part episode.

I watch very little TV, but I stumbled across The Middle and have gotten addicted. It takes a lot to get me to actually laugh out loud (I'm kind of humor impaired), but something about this show cracks me up, perhaps because I relate to it so well.

Consider this clip about trying to wake up a teenager. I have friends who have used spray bottles of water. I went the airhorn route myself. My teen daughters and I got a kick out of this:

I only watch sport on TV.

Haven't seen any of the current series that are popular, though my wife watches a few on the net.

I have the whole series of The Shield which is the greatest show ever IMO.  And I loved Deadwood as well.

Remember Carnivale that was on a few years back but never had a 3rd season? That show was awesome

I didn't really miss it when we didn't have it. Then our son came back and he couldn't stand life without it so it's been back with us a few years. I can't stand it unless I'm actually sitting down and watching something. Otherwise I find it to be a huge distraction and conversation killer.

Not free but cheaper than cable. It's $99 a year plus you get free two day shipping and other benefits of some kind. Now, if you'd like to enroll full time in college it's free for six months then half price the rest of the year. But you'd have to go on a scholarship to realize any real savings.  ;D

I pretty much vote with my feet if a pop song is over 3 minutes long, an album is more than 35 minutes long, or a film is over 100 minutes long (the definitive 'Paths of Glory' clocks in at 86 minutes).
If it can't be said in that time, don't bother.

Ditto TV - if it's divided up into 'seasons', comes in a 8 dvd box set and, frankly, is American, I'm out the door.

Fave TV series? - 'The Prisoner' 1967-68, 17 episodes.

You said it! It used to be shown every summer in my hometown in this beautiful old classic theater. It's so great to watch with an audience! Whenever Leslie Howard came on, he was booed, and Clark Gable was always cheered -- or should I say, Ashley was booed and Rhett was cheered.   ;)

Oh wow. I've never seen it in a theater but that's exactly the type of theater I would want to see it in. I'll have to keep my eyes open. There is an old theater in Salamanca, the Ray Evans theater (he wrote Silver Bells and is from there). It's mostly used for live performances but occasionally they show classic movies. I can't think of a better one for them to show this year.

There...I just "liked" them on Facebook so I'll know.

When I lived near Atlanta, we visited the Underground. It's a shopping and eating area that is at the level where the wounded in the movie are waiting at the rail station. Now it's 3-4 stories underground  (hence the name). There is still a few original street lamps there and one has a dent where a cannon ball hit it!

I saw Gone With The Wind on the BIG screen at the Loew's Paradise Theatre in The Bronx (before it went multiplex)...

That was a good name for that movie theater.  It had a very high ceiling with little lights in it that would flicker giving the impression of twinkling stars.  I took a girlfriend to see it.  She sat there mesmerized by the movie.  After all, it is a girl's movie...just like An Affair To Remember...

That's a Chick's Movie - Sleepless in Seattle (6/8) Movie CLIP (1993) HD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c77JrXbqqV0#ws)

 ;D

I've read that Leslie Howard never read the novel and was completely unaware of the movie's plot.  He just learned his lines in the script and played his scenes.

I've also read that there were very few live extras in the scene where the wounded were being tended to at the rail station.  They were mostly in the foreground with dummies alongside.  They moved the dummies' arms with thin sticks to make them look like they were beckoning for help.  It was indeed a very impressive scene as the camera pulled back to reveal the great number of wounded soldiers and the tattered Confederate flag atop the flagpole...

There are, of course, exceptions to the rule ('Godfather', 'Godfather Part 2') and I was expecting someone to quote 'Hey Jude' or 'Desolation Row' or 'Blonde on Blonde' or 'Gone With The Wind' but, as a rule, the above timings are not too far out, and much tedium would have been saved if an editing process had been in play in music and/or cinema over the years.

Less is more.

I love that scene (with the camera pulling back and eventually showing the tattered Confederate flag). I always try to spot the dummies.

When I lived in Virginia back in the late 1990s and again in the early 2000s, some people actually had bumper stickers that read "Happiness Is a Yankee Heading North." Really?! As a native of NYS, that rankled.  ;)

I agree. Most movies today run 'way too long. A lot of them could use some serious editing.

My viewing is mostly rolling news, wildlife documentaries and "old" (pre 1990s) movies but there are a few TV series (both classic and current) that I enjoy.

Among the modern ones I love (i.e. never miss an episode) are:

"Dragon's Den" (2005 to date) - Budding entrepreneurs pitch ideas to a panel of multi-millionaire investors. Simple format but fascinating.
"Ice Road Truckers" (2007 to date) - zero interest in trucks, vehicles or mechanics of any kind but the larger than life characters in this ongoing reality series make it strangely addictive
"The Mentalist" (2008 to date) - brilliant psychological American crime series with Simon Baker as the eccentric lead (a modern, sassy Columbo-type show)
"Luther" (2010-2013) - gripping UK police drama spotlighting the seamy underbelly of London
"Dracula" (2013) - sumptuously riveting Anglo-American production starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers

My son nagged me to give "The Sopranos" a try but I just can't seem to get going with it. Everyone else that I know who HAS seen it raves about it being fantastic, so I really ought to have another serious attempt at it.

American comedy rarely tickles me but I am delighted to see that the complete box set of Bilko ("The Phil Silvers Show") is due for DVD release shortly. Hilarity which has stood the test of time, yet (mystifyingly to many, many Brits who hold it in reverence) I have often read that it is not particularly cherished in its homeland?

The Phil Silvers Show is very well remembered here in the States. Sgt. Bilko was the ultimate scammer!

That TV series spawned McHale's Navy and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.  We were well-saturated with military humor for 15 years!

Later in the 60's it was The Monkees, the Invaders, Get Smart, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeanie. Aall american. The only UK shows I can remember were Dr Who and The Prisoner - which i didn't understand. This was all happening in NZ by the way.

You got me thinking there Kevin.... and I've realised that nearly every show I enjoyed in my British sixties childhood was indeed American. There were a few British exceptions, but  "The Monkees", "The Banana Split Show", "The Addams Family", "Lost In Space", "F Troop", "The New Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn", "Batman", "Tarzan", "Bewitched", "The Munsters"... My God the list is endless looking back! And that's without taking account of all those US cartoon series... "Wacky Races", "Deputy Dawg", "Rocky And Bullwinkle", "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!", "Astronut", "Shazzan", "The Impossibles" (guess who they reminded me of!) etc etc...

And there was me thinking it was the time of "The British Invasion"!!

The American TV shows you mentioned were great, but it was a real treat to watch British shows like The Saint, Secret Agent (Danger Man), The Avengers, and The Prisoner.

I loved Diana Rigg!

Forgot The Avengers. Best theme music ever - still sends a shiver down my spine. My pre pubescent me found Diana Rigg strangely interesting.
I was more of a Man From U.N.C.L.E guy than The Saint.
And let's not forget all Gerry Andersons shows. god I want to be a kid again

I mentioned Bilko several posts back then forgot to pay homage to its most obvious cartoon tribute..."Top Cat", which I loved as a kid. But I recall over here in the UK there was a bit of controversy for a while because "Top Cat" was the name of a pet food brand (I think) and so, ridiculously, the cartoon was - at least for a time - re-named "Boss Cat" (despite the unaltered theme song and constant reference as "T.C." - I know, I know, crazy huh?)

Some of those British ITC series were just so cool. I think my favourites - both from around 1969 - were "Randall & Hopkirk (Deceased)" and "Department S" (with arguably the best theme tune of all!)

I haven't habitually watched a sitcom since Seinfeld. But Big Bang is one I'm happy to sit down and watch anytime. Really funny.

Just finished the concluding episode of "American Horror Story: Freak Show" the brilliant fourth season in the ongoing FX horror anthology TV series. Absolutely superb.

They're re-running an old favourite of mine on the Sony Entertainment channel at present: "Hustle" with its elaborate cons and brilliant acting from the likes of Adrian Lester, Robert Glenister and Robert Vaughn. Great viewing.

Here I thought she was just easily flustered. But you're the doctor Barry! At any rate, I could identify with her. I knew I was never going to be the Jennifer Marlowe type! But that really was a great show. I remember one night when we were watching it my mom said, "I wonder if that girl is Tommy and Dick's sister?" I said, "Mom! They weren't the Smithers Brithers!" She always thought the credits said Jan Smothers. We laughed about that for a long time.

That was fun, Kathy! I especially liked finding out about something that always puzzled me; why the the Professor and Mary Ann got the short end of the stick in the first season credits. Tina Lousie sounds like a real, um, diva! Bob Denver, on the other hand, sounds like he was a real sweetheart. I've got to wonder: if Carroll O'Connor had gotten the role of the Skipper would that have somehow changed future events and kept him from becoming Archie Bunker? I can't even fathom that!

Its beautifully made and blends real life events with fiction, all set in a New York Advertising agency.

This isn't a series as such, or a movie, so perhaps I should start a new thread called "Your Favorite Documentary"  ;)

Anyway, recently watched the three-episode "Trainwreck: Woodstock '99." Wow. "Trainwreck" is an understatement. What a fascinating study of mob mentality and crowd behavior. (And greed, on the part of the promoters, in my opinion.)
