San Francisco is definitely at the top of my places to visit list. Lots of family history there. I can’t believe one of those relatives used to camp alone in Yosemite well into his 70’s. He wrote a book about it in 1949 and I was thrilled to find it on eBay. He told some incredible stories in those pages and maybe some of them were even true! ;)

Kathy, so excited we just booked a short notice cruise on the new Royal Caribbean ship, Ovation Of The Seas, circumnavigating New Zealand.
We go into 3 Fjords on the South Island
We leave on the 2nd November !!

Oh,that sounds great, Kevin!! Royal Caribbean (as you may already know from past excursions) is noted for its impeccable hospitality. I was blown away.

P.S. I think I might have posted this already, but as soon as we got to the pier for our one cruise, this song came on the radio. My father was surprised that the kids (ages 14, 13, and 9) knew it.  :)

Im pretty sure that song was covered in a later version Kathy, maybe that why the kids knew it ;)

Nah; I'm a dedicated oldies fan, so they knew the original.

(From the book thread, October 1: Into the Raging Sea: Thirty-Three Mariners, One Megastorm, and the Sinking of El Faro. I couldn't put it down.)

I was shocked to read that the ship (a merchant marine vessel) had Titanic-style lifeboats -- on hand-winched davits, no less! Apparently the requirement of completely enclosed, more modern and easily launchable lifeboats have been required since 1986, but the El Faro got grandfathered out of that.

Dark rumors of cannibalism only made the mystery more compelling. It wasn’t until 2014 that a Canadian mission, equipped with all the latest marine archaeological equipment, located Erebus. Terror was discovered two years later.

That's one of my favorite topics! Have you read Iceblink? It's fascinating. There are several excellent books on this topic. I read all about it before the ships were found, and now some of the hard-to-find books are being re-released and becoming easier to find.

I, personally, would never set foot on a ship called the Terror.  ha2ha
