Which Beatle do you honestly think is the best singer? I think I would choose Paul. He has such a beautiful and flexible voice, and always has. He can sing songs like Blackbird and songs like Helter Skelter, he sounds so perfect. It's hard to choose, though! I love all of their voices!

Paul it's so varied , not much double tracking needed with his voice .
But i like all The Beatles voice's for different reasons , John's is dreamy ,George's is full of warmth and Ringo's is like mine ;D

mccartney by a long shot one the reasons i love the beatles is there 3 way harmonising and mccartneys ability to go from extremely low to crazy high in one line is fantastic, he can also change the tone of his voice from song to song and sometimes it sounds like another person especially on some of the splhcb tracks each track has a slightly different sounding tone in his voice, i think ringos is the weakest but what he does he does well he has natural low voice thats quite monotone, georges is decent and improved as they went on and he was always the comfortable middle pitch between mccartneys highs and lennons lows in 3 way harmonising, and lastly lennons is probably the most unique sounding and most recognisable with its raspiness but overall mccartneys is better imo

I think 1962 through Pepper or so it was John - gentle when he sang softly, and as hard a rock voice as any when he "yelled".
After this I kind of think he lost his vocal cords ... some bad combination of too much tobacco, screaming, and age maybe. And then from then on it was Paul IMHO - the guy's voice is so flexible - excellence in every register.
-
lennons is probably the most unique sounding and most recognisable
That's why I voted for John. When his voice hits the groove, like it does on "A Day In the Life", it is absolutely irreproducible. Paul has lots of range, but that doesn't hit the spot for me. For "best" singing voice, I need that emotional connection. John managed that most easily for me in the group. In terms of how much I like to listen to each voice, just for its emotional qualities, I'd pick John George Paul Ringo. Cheers.
-
I think Paul has the best voice. He can sing different kinds of songs from Yesterday to Helter Skelter, etc. Athough I love John & George singing too. Each one is unique in their own style.
-
I think Paul has 3 1/2 octaves, John 3, George 2 and Ringo 1. I'm not certain though.
-
I would go for Macca because he just does it without any s***
i also love John & George's voices, but it always annoys me when i listen to
the double-tracking that Lennon did on his voice or the echo he had on it.
This is why i love john's home demo's when his voice is clear.
George had a beautiful tone to his voice, i've realised this in recent times, just listen
to Stuck Inside A Cloud.
But i voted Paul as he kind sing alsorts like rock n roll, love songs or the whimsical songs! :)
and on his new album he kind of showcases all sides to his voice, Mr Bellamy (funny whimsical voice),
Only Mama Knows, Nod Your Head (rock n roll voice) or You Tell Me (the soft macca voice!)

This is tough... singing just singing either Paul or John.... let me try to decide...George though, I love his singing voice... but just listening to them not seeing them just concentrating on music...
I have to go with Andy Smith and say, Paul is good because he never messed with his voice as John did, John just singing on demos like She's A Friend of Dorthy or even Real Love are amazing....but maybe Paul over all because he never did that he just sang...and it sounds good...
-
I'm going to go with Paul on that one... he's got such a beautiful voice, and his range is quite amazing. He can do something like Helter Skelter, then something like Here There and Everywhere. Oh yeah, Andy Smith, I absolutely agree with you about MAF:
and on his new album he kind of showcases all sides to his voice, Mr Bellamy (funny whimsical voice),
Only Mama Knows, Nod Your Head (rock n roll voice) or You Tell Me (the soft macca voice!)
But, having said that, I actually enjoy listening to all the Beatles' voices - each of them has its own "special" qualities that makes it enjoyable for me :)

I agree with you Octie. But then, John has the best rock n roll singing voice (imho)

Oh yes, he could tear a song apart at times. Rock n Roll Music, Twist & Shout,
etc! :) George developed his voice later on as he wasen't really that great singer
on his own at first. He worked perfectly with the harmonies though (this boy, yes it is).
i think he became more confident as a singer in the mid-6o's.
and i was listening to the demo version While My Guitar Gently Weeps a couple of days
ago on Anthology 3 & thought how beautifully he sang it! :) :)

George is absolutely moving when he sings from the heart. The version of WMGGW that you mention, Hear Me Lord, Who Can See It, That Is All-- argh, he just slays me!
George had a weird trajectory as a singer. If you listen to his early Beatles stuff, Live at the BBC era, he was just belting it out alongside Paul and John. As the Beatles got into their recording period (focus more on P&J compositions and less on live act), he actually seemed to lose confidence as a singer and pulled back. It took his spiritual awakening to help him find it again. I agree he grew steadily stronger as a solo act. He was really on for Cloud 9 and Brainwashed.
-
Faul is the best.
-
hmmm well, if i'd want one of them to sing me to sleep..it'd have to be Paul. But, on the other hand, recording voice, I like John's very much. :-)
-
There's no doubt: SIR PAUL. His vocal range is the best by far. He's really versatile about the kind of song, a beautiful love song like I Will, a vodevil Martha My Dear, a real metal Helter Skelter, he can sing anything he wants. Just realised that kick-ass rockers like Long Tall Sally (probably best vocal performance ever by a Beatle) and Kansas City were both recorded in just 1 take! ONE! ;D
-

Yeah, no messing about! ;)
-
I think Paul has the greatest range, but I've always prefered John's voice. I like them all really, they suit their own songs. I mean, George would never have written a song like 'I'm Down' would he!
-
I still can't vote. IMPOSSIBLE! But it's either John or Paul. Or Paul or John.
-
This reminds me of the difference between Strikers & Forwards debate in Football (Soccer).....
Paul unquestionably has (had) the better singing voice over John.
But the better vocalist was (is) probably John.
Example:
Great Male Singers: Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Roy Orbison, George Michael, Elton John, Smokey Robinson, etc.
Great Male Vocalists: Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Thom Yorke, Kurt Cobain, Sly Stone, etc
-
hmmm im trying to get what you mean in the last post ? is it that the singers are great in a conventional kinda way, and that the vocalists are great in a way that isnt easily summed up or explainable they just have that something ?. If it is a totally agree i think the guys you put under singers are the guys that if you asked who has the best pitch, can hit the notes and always gives a great vocal peformance the guys you gave in great male singers would all come to mind with also i would put freddie mercury in the same line.
The guys you have put in best male vocalist havent got the best range or arent key perfect but have that tone to there voice that can make them more standout than the male singers?.
-
Who has the best singing voices? I voted for the Man Of A Thousand Voices
(http://home.att.net/~thorobred7/Fool_On_The_Hill.jpg)
I agree with Andy and KE that John has the best rock and roll voice and with hh's sentiments regarding Goeorge's voice, a profoundly sensitive and moving voice.
I give Ringo an A for effort while with the Beatles. He has done somewhat better solo.
-
Nice post, Hello Goodbye! ;D
-
I give Ringo an A for effort while with the Beatles.
Yeah, no one could sing With A Little Help From My Friends better than Ringo!
never could get into Joe Cocker's version.
Speaking of which, who today let's their drummer have a chance to sing? :-/

I always enjoy watching and hearing Ringo doing live performances of Boys, I Wanna Be Your Man and Honey Don't. He rocked!
Yes, With A Little Help From My Friends became his signature song while with the Beatles.....quite rightly!
-
and his performance of Act Naturally on the Blackpool Night Out Live
in 1965 was very good. I don't think he would have got away with singing a
real serious song in the Beatles.

Thank you, Andy. I'd like to see that.

Just for the record. My brother always told me that here Paul looks EXACTLY like me when I was a little boy. :P
But Paul looks terrible in this picture. lol

Thank you, Andy. I'd like to see that.
and i will find it on YouTube & put on here! i'll have a look around! ;)

For love songs and melodies: Paul
For edgy rock songs : John
George also had a wonderful voice for softer songs.
And Ringo, he really does have a special quality to his voice. I love him on Boys, Act Naturally, With a Little Help.
But if I had to pick just one Beatle as best singer, ummmm,,,,errrrrr...uhhhhhh im torn between Paul and John, just because I like their voices equally but really for different types of songs.
-
i could never decide on georges voice becausde ialways felt he lackedconfidence in his voice and could have produced more than we heard, like macca knew he was good and was always up for pushing his voice to the limit due to his confidence were as i always felt george held back and played it safe in front of the guys.
-
Paul is obviously the best technical singer, but it all depends on what you prefer.
-
Lennon's voice gives me chills. That's all I'm saying.
-
I think Paul has a better vocal range and can adapt to basically any kind of song. so I voted in favor of Paul
but on the other hand John's voice is very haunting and full of meaning. George and Ringo's voices both are warm and loving.
-
Paul's although i do like John's and George .
-
From the standpoint of who's voice I think is technically the best and has the most range...defintely Paul. John's voice is nice for the emotion he puts in his vocals, but Paul has this one wrapped up.
-
ringo's voice is awesome lol
-
ringo's voice is awesome lol
Don't knock Ringo, I actually enjoy his voice quite well. It has a nice lovable, warm feeling to it. Perfectly suited for the songs he sang in the Beatles. Don't forget some of the awesome songs he had solo. I actually enjoyed his solo hits album yesterday.
-
no i wasn't saying it in a bad way. i seriously like his voice. it fits him. he made yellow submarine great. i kinda can't see anybody of the other 3 singing it
-
i chose paul. they all have different but great voices. i wouldnt think of twist and shout sung by paul!!
-
I actually enjoyed his solo hits album yesterday.
....you don't mean that Photograph: Best Of Ringo Starr album by any chance? Coz that's exactly what I was listening to yesterday too! (bigeyes1) (grin) Love Ringo-songs! :)
By the way, sorry to bring up something that was said a year ago, but...
and his performance of Act Naturally on the Blackpool Night Out Live
in 1965 was very good.
.... I agree, and also, I love the little introduction that he does to it! (grin) (grin)
About the voices, as I said before - love 'em all! Each is special in its own way :)
-
....you don't mean that Photograph: Best Of Ringo Starr album by any chance? Coz that's exactly what I was listening to yesterday too! (bigeyes1) (grin) Love Ringo-songs! :)
That was the exact album I was listening to, Octie. I love that album. Great collection of his songs!
-
Look what Jeff Giles writes about Lennon`s voice: There`s always been a generation of baby-boomer fans, whose feelings for his imploring, serrated voice run so deep that it`s as if they grew up not just with him but because of him." Unique timbre.
-
Paul because his voice is suited to do any type of song.
-
I chose John because "A Day in the Life" goes right through my chest when I listen to it.
Paul's got a good voice, but it never did that to me.
-
Paul. His voice reminds me of pumpkin pie...smooth and sweet but a bit spicy too. And I do love pumpkin pie. Mmmm. :P
-
Great comparison, Penny!
-
I love pumpkin pie! :)
John, although Paul is really, really good, too. John's voice can be really soft and smooth, like in In My Life and in Girl, he has so much emotion in his voice. *sighs* Whereas, in songs like 'Money' and 'Twist and Shout' his voice is total rocker. Paul can do just the same, but I feel that John has more feeling in his singing, more emotion.
-
^ I think John is really good as an emotional singer. I think I like him best when he is singing gentle love ballads because it turns into an emotional experience for me too. In terms of vocals, I wonder if John is better at letting his guard down than Paul, who seems to be more self-aware (or self-conscious) as a performer.
2GmVajkqLNU (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GmVajkqLNU)
Sigh.
Oh...and I wonder what kind of pie John would be? Maybe something a bit tart? ;)
-
Lemon pie! You know...Lennon, Lemon.. Okay, that's a really bad one. Pumpkin's taken, that's my favorite. Yeah, lemon actually fits.
No, Lemon Meringue! That's better.
'Love' makes me want to cry. I don't know why, it just does.
When I was thinking of pies for people, I coudn't stop thinking of 'mud pie' ;D
-
John's voice will always give the shivers up my spine and his rock n roll voice is just WOW!
-
Oh, what are you doing to me? Johnny, Johnny...
