Songs That Influenced The Early Beatles
« on: July 16, 2017, 02:31:49 AM »

Ive been interested in listening to songs they did by their original artists, some really good songs, that the boys enjoyed playing and singing.
Joe Brown & The Bruvvers had chart success before The Beatles and I think "A Picture Of You" was their only No 1
They obviously liked it and George sang it well.

This is a great topic, Kev! It's also an interest of mine, one that got ignited the first time I listened to Live at the BBC. What a joy it's been to discover a previously unknown body of work.

Famous Yodeller Frank Ifield had a huge British hit with his song "I Remember You" in 1962 .The Beatles actually toured with him, Paul also sang it, a very catchy song.

I love this one by Arthur Alexander. It's probably my favorite.

I really wish The Beatles had done a proper recording of this.

I'm not sure why Ringo's picture was put in there. Oh well!

I get obsessed with it from time to time, too! The title sounds kind of like a smarmy pick-up line but the lyrics are very sweet and it has a cool sound.

On the subject of inspiration for Hello Little Girl, John told author David Sheff, "That was me. That was actually my first song. [Singing] 'When I see you every day I say mmm hmm, hello little girl.' I remember some Thirties or Forties song which was [singing] 'You're delightful, you're delicious and da da da. Isn't it a pity that you are such a scatterbrain.' [Laughing] That always fascinated me for some reason or another. It's also connected to my mother. It's all very Freudian. She used to sing that one. So I made Hello Little Girl out of it."

Shaff assumed that John was referring to Cole Porter's 1936 It's De-Lovely.

However, Mark Lewisohn picked up on the word scatterbrained and puts forth a different theory for John's inspiration:

"It was with Julia in mind that John wrote another song in the final weeks of 1957. It was his third attempt, following “Calypso Rock” and a second piece about which he’d remember just as little. (He said only once, some years later, “I did one which had the line ‘My love is like a bird with a broken wing’ which I was very proud of.”) Among the songs Julia liked to sing around 1 Blomfield Road was the 1939 dance-band and film number “Scatterbrain,” and John was fascinated by the rhythmic flow of such lines as 'When you smile it’s so delightful / When you talk it’s so insane / Still it’s charming chatter, scatterbrain."

A book I've read contends that this version of Beautiful Dreamer ...

Based on the way the two songs sound to me and the timing reported in this article, it seems quite plausible to me, Moog. What do your trained ears tell you?
