More than 50 years have passed since the Beatles put out their first records - in Hamburg - but millions of feet are still tapping to their music. Plenty of those fans are in China, and the Beijing Beatles, a tribute band based in the capital, thrives on the music that set off Beatlemania in the early 1960s.

The Beatles at EMI: The Contract, 18 June 1962

Perhaps the most significant unresolved controversy surrounding the recording of the Beatles first single “Love Me Do” rests on the question of whether or not EMI had finalized a contract with them. To wit: on 6 June 1962, were the Beatles auditioning or were they already under contract? Documentation and personal memories conflict such that no single answer can claim to be definitive, even as the evidence suggests a nuanced social interplay between Parlophone’s George Martin and Beatles manager Brian Epstein.

The Beatles in Bangor: 1967 BBC Wales archive footage

As Sir Paul McCartney celebrates his 70th birthday, BBC Wales has uncovered some silent footage from 1967 of The Beatles in Bangor.
In June 1967, The Beatles released Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, seen by many as their creative peak. On 24 August, they met Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at a lecture in London, and the following day travelled by train to north Wales for a 10-day conference on transcendental meditation.
