Paul McCartney - Here Today
« on: September 03, 2011, 09:24:43 PM »

Lets discuss this beautiful song. I love everything about it. For me it's so unreal. Melody, lyrics, Paul's voice and fact that this song is for John makes this song special in many ways.

I think its probably the weakest tribute song to John i've heard. George and Eltons were much better. This is one of those times that the lyrics kill the song for me and i'm no lyrics person. Weak.

Well it is song for John. Lyrics should be most important (atleast for this one, even if you are not lyrics person.). I dont like George's , Elton John's is great also. But of course it is your opinion and i am ok with that.

I've never  really liked this song. It just doesn't hit the spot. I always think of this song as a strong that's straining to be good and not making it. It also feels a bit flat and well it just doesn't really have any inspiration in it or not enough to make it a truly good song never mind great. it's alright and moves me but yeah it'st just a bit flat. I don't listen to Tug and didn't even install E&I on my itunes. I've got a playlist of the Tug songs which I love. It's one of my fav. playlists. This song isn't on it.

I think the lyrics are lovely but more for a love song, I agree its a weak song , like a lot of his solo career album tracks (IMO), the sentimentality seems a bit too 'forced' on this.

I dont even like All Those Years Ago but I agree its a better song

Yes, that explains how I feel too. Also I agree with Toejam when he stated that the song inspires to be good, but its just too 'flat'.

Not a great song at all and I realize it was changed for John instead of heading over to Ringo, but at least its catchy.

It's one of the weaker tracks on Tug Of War as far as I'm concerned but hey - that's not too bad when you consider how high the bar was generally set by that superb album (Paul's best in my opinion).

I like the song more now than I used to, I think hearing the live version(s) where Paul chokes up slightly before regaining his composure is very moving. Tracks that could be sickly or sentimental in the hands of a lesser artist were often saved by Paul because he's so genuine. And there's no doubt that this one comes straight from the heart.

It's one of my favorite Macca tracks, I don't find it forced whatsoever. It's just a beautiful song in my opinion.

I think some of the lyrics are very good, for example...

Well, knowing you,
You'd probably laugh and say
That we were worlds apart.

I think this is Paul acknowledging John's supposed rough exterior, then...

But as for me,
I still remember how it was before
And I am holding back the tears no more.
Uh, uh, uh,
I love you, uh.

Paul saying to John, we were best friends and I know how it was. Then in an unusual show of emotion for Paul, he is saying he is crying.

I think it is a good song that shows how Paul really felt about John. I think if it had of been the other way, John would have been proud to write a song like "Here Today" for Paul.
