Really this one...?  :( Is this the best?
OK, fantastic album, But I think the 4 that came after this one (Revolver, Pepper, White & Road) were really better albums!
But the biggest change between one album and another was with Rubber Soul! No question for that!  ;D

Rubber soul was their departure from their earlier stuff.

Do you really think the jump from Help! to RS is greater than that of RS to Revolver?
Plenty of RS songs would fit on Help! and vice versa. But when you hear Eleanor Rigby, Yellow Submarine, Love You to and TNK you think "woh. That's new."

I think the leaps The Beatles were taking creativly between records was breathtaking .
"Rubber Soul" stands by it's self and sets a brilliant bench mark for the great albums that follow.
Revolver as better songs on it ,as Pepper doe's in my opinion .
But  "Rubber Soul " for me is faultless from beging to end and after listening to it now for 30 odd years , i just think it get's better with age .

Agreed. Rubber Soul has a sense of humour. They sound united and like they're really enjoying themselves. This rubs off on the listener. And all the songs are top notch - with nice switches from joyful rockers to country to introspection  without any loss of continuity (that sounds like a real w*nk I know, but I can't think of better words).

I think they suffered a bit when they became all self-aware - this is just joyous uninhibited music- making with a bunch of excellent tunes. From Revolver on they become very self-conscious of what they were doing - still making classic albums - but that joy and innocence was gone.

As an album it sounds much closer to Help! than Revolver.(it too has introspection and non-rock instrumentation.) Maybe rather than representing a new beginning this is the last album by a band making music because they really enjoyed it, rather than because they were making "art" or trying to convey a message. And the dope didn't seem to hurt. Damn the dentist.

I really like this analysis, Kevin. It really rings true for me. "Joyous" vs "self-conscious" seems to fit the early Beatles very well. They didn't yet know they were a lasting phenomenon, they just wanted to have a laugh and play some tunes while people were still interested!

Kevin, I started writing a diatribe on this, but decided to start a new thread instead. Thanks!

What a happy note to end on. Cheers, DaveRam!

Although some of the songs might fit in Help!, it is noticeable they were evolving.... songs like Norwegian wood using exotic instruments, Nowhere man... but yes in Revolver the change was huge.

Rubber Soul signaled the end of Beatlemania. I think it is the last time they truly worked together as a single unit. On Revolver both John and Paul are pulling apart music wise, and George is beginning to shine a little more. It's a great album, as much the end of an era as Revolver was the beginning of a new one.

I've always though of both Rubber Soul & Revolver as transition albums where The Beatles were evolving and their individual writing styles were emerging.  Also the fact that George's contributions were more noticeable.  But we can say that Rubber Soul marks the end of the Beatlemania era and Revolver was the beginning of a new one.  Both albums are at the top of my list.

See, everyone has their own opinions! We can't all like the same
Beatles albums but of course we do critisize, so what can we do?? :-/ :)
I agree that Pepper & Abbey Road are masterpieces! :)

I know!! I was just giving my own opinion!
We don't like all the same for sure. For example, my father bought the original Let It Be box-set back in 1970, when he was young and pretty  :) and it became his favourite Beatles album ever. To me Let It Be is their worst so...   ;D

Yeah, Let It Be has never been one of my fav's either.
Some great songs on it (i think Macca's are the stronger ones on it &
George's I Me Mine), but overall the album to me is pretty poor the way it holds
together. :-/ I still think they should have left Abbey Road as the Last Album!

I quite agree, BM.  And for this reason, Rubber Soul has always been my favorite album.

In many ways, Beatles For Sale heralded Rubber Soul
