George wondered where he'd be

if not for the Beatles.  I think he knew he'd just have been an ordinary bloke without them.  Humbling self-reflection, I think.  George was touted as being spiritual but I think he was also a very practical realistic thinker, too.  John once said that when George questioned the Majarishi's intentions he felt there had to be something to it because George did not suffer fools gladly (not the exact quote.)

I think George knew that he wasn't being encouraged by either John or Paul; two rather big egos.  But he developed quite nicely on his own and at his own rate and wrote some of the prettiest songs in The Beatles catalog.

Loco Mo:
I recall Eric Clapton commenting at the Concert for George how he realized how melodic George's songs were.  I think playing the concert contributed to this awareness.  Even so, George still resides in the shadows of the great John and Paul.
