In my opinion Help! has 4 excellent songs ("Help!", "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away", "Ticket To Ride", "Yesterday"), 4 very good ones ("The Night Before", "Another Girl", "You're Going To Lose That Girl", "I've Just Seen A Face") and the rest are fillers. I think that's enough to call it a very good album. I even like it more than A Hard Day's Night, despite not being as consistent, as I think that the best material in Help! is better than anything the Beatles did before. I have even rated the White Album at the same level (four stars) since despite having many great moments it's got more fillers than any Beatles album. As for Let It Be, I really enjoy it but it sounds like an unfinished product, and I think that the title track is the only tune that is at the same level of the best songs in Help!.

Fair go's mate, I guess its all subjective, I probably would agree with you 4 excellent songs but to me the rest are poor, the 4 you rate as very good one's I dont rate, just I love you- you love me teenage girly type songs.

I rate LIB as having more great songs, even songs like Ive Got A Feeling, the singing makes an average song superb to listen too

as I say though its interesting to hear peoples views  ;)

Yes, I agree that those are mindless love songs (not all love songs are mindless), but musically I think that they had some advances from the previous stuff: more complex harmonies, use of more instruments, inventive drumming. Just different opinions.

By the way, I tend to agree with the ratings given by these guys: http://www.warr.org/beatles.html

I actually think All Ive Got To Do, Not A Second Time & Things We Said Today are superior to the stuff on Help, (with the exception of Yesterday)

Exceptions that confirm the rule. :)

Actually the songs you mentioned are among my favourite ones from the early stuff. But somehow I still find Help! as a small step forward, the transitional album before the Beatles' greatest period, which in my opinion was from late-1965 to mid-1967.

I agree with yours EXCEPT  ;D

I dont think MMT rates higher than LIB as MMT was just a double EP (it had single's tacked on to make it and album)

and as Flying and Blue Jay Way were poor songs (IMO) I rate LIB higher

Yeah - I was going more off the tracks that appear on the CD or the original US album rather than the original double EP. Because it adds great tunes like Strawberry Fields, Penny Lane, AYNIL - it really bumps up the "greatness" level  ;D

My favourite song from the MMT film wasn't on the EP or album, unfortunately ....

And the idea for the scene came from The Beatles' performance with stripper Shirley or Janice, eight years earlier, I suppose.

Please Please Me  *****  (my fave, energetic, driving and highly enjoyable)
With The Beatles  ****  (contrary to what a lot of people say, I think it's a strong follow-up)
A Hard Day's Night  *****  (great songs, very cohesive, a step forward sound-wise)
Beatles For Sale  ***  (a little lacking, but good moments)
Help! ****  (not the best but just about earns four stars)
Rubber Soul  ****  (solid album but a little shaky in places with the musical transition that's underway at this point)
Revolver  *****  (diverse, fresh and delves into the little explored)
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band  *****  (the big masterpiece, varied, powerful and creatively awesome)
Magical Mystery Tour  ****  (good collection of songs that continue to push the usual boundaries)
The White Album  ****  (hugely diverse, wonderful contrasts, occasional dips in energy but overall fantastic)
Abbey Road  *****  (a beautiful piece of work from start to finish, strong and confident, hugely enjoyable)
Let It Be  ****  (a collection of songs that are individually credible, surprisingly strong considering its creation)

Generous, I know, but I find most Beatles albums very strong in different ways.

Ignoring MMT (a double EP) and Oldies But Goldies (a compilation), I've tried to put the original UK albums in order of preference (of course, this shifts about a bit from week to week depending on mood etc but will broadly stay as this for me):

1. Rubber Soul (*****)
2. Abbey Road (*****)
3. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (*****)
4. A Hard Day's Night (*****)
5. Revolver (*****)

6. The Beatles (****)
7. Help! (****) (side one five stars but side two only three stars)
8. Beatles For Sale (****)

9. With The Beatles (***)
10. Please Please Me (***)
11. Let It Be (***)

12. Yellow Submarine (**) (Weak by their standards and don't like/can't really count the second half...sorry Mr Martin!)
