The Vejtables






The Vejtables hit the San Francisco Bay Area Scene in 1964.  Jan Errico wrote some their songs and was the drummer for the group.  She was one of the first female rock drummers.  She changed her name to Jan Ashton as she felt it sounded more British.  The Vejtables helped pioneer early Bay Area folk and psychedelic rock.

They were most notable for I Still Love You which was written by Jan Errico...

By late 1965 and early 1966 The Vejtables were becoming noticeably psychedelic...

They were a Bay Area phenomenon, Todd.  I heard them when I was in California during the summer of 1965.  They were folk-rock and just evolving into psychedelic at that time.  Here they sound like a cross between The Rolling Stones and Jefferson Airplane...

Jan Errico (Ashton) left the group in early 1966 when The Vejtables were evolving into a more hard-core psychedelic group and began sounding like this...

I have 'Feel...The Vejtables' - very enjoyable. I didn't know of them in the day, but crossed paths with this last year by accident. Glad I did.

I bought the Feel...The Vejtables CD years ago.  Somehow it got shuffled back to the rear of my cabinet.  I just "discovered" it again over the weekend.  And I'm glad I did too!

That's good stuff! I'm surprised I've never heard them on Pandora. My station plays a lot of the less widely known bands like this. It's neat hearing  them as they made their progression from folk/rock to psychedelic. I was particularly interested to see what they did with Tom Paxton's song. It's probably my favorite track on Peter, Paul and Mary's "See What Tomorrow Brings" album. The Vejtables certainly gave it a more upbeat treatment but I like it. Thanks for sharing these Barry.

I see that that it's been released by Sundazed Records, a great label for 60s music.


Hmmm...no longer on Sundazed, but Feel The Vejtables goes for only 703.51 new on Amazon.   ha2ha

They only have 5 songs on Mog, and no albums.

Nice surprise, I like them, their sound reminds me a little to the early Jefferson Airplane. How I love these old raw-sounding recordings that modern remastering didn't get to touch!

Nowhere Man, they certainly did sound like early Jefferson Airplane when Signe Toly Anderson was with them.  The Bay Area was a fertile spawning ground for these folk rock groups.  Many groups like these formed in 1964 and 1965 and played in San Francisco coffee houses and clubs.  The Matrix was considered the home of The Jefferson Airplane.

The Feel...The Vejtables CD has a few more songs which are equally enjoyable as the ones I posted.  The alternate take of I Still Love You better highlights the group's vocal harmonies and guitar playing.

Tom Paxton wrote one great folk song there!  And Peter, Paul and Mary covered it well...
