George Martin's score for the Yellow Submarine film
« on: January 10, 2010, 02:12:57 AM »

Usually, when I see reviews of the Yellow Submarine album, they say it's not a very good album, because half of it is crappy incidental music.

I don't think this is a fair judgment. As a fan of very many different types of music, I'm aware that the score is of the Neoclassical genre, and it's a very high-quality, well-composed example at that. I think the problem is, it's not classical music fans that are judging the score, but rather, it's rock fans judging classical music. Of course most of them are not going to like it! They're expecting Beatles songs, and they're getting classical music! But the score, including side 2 of the Yellow Submarine album, "A Beginning", and the as-yet-unreleased-on-record Liverpool/Ringo's House music, are very fun to listen to, in my opinion.

What are your opinions of George Martin's score for the Yellow Submarine film?

I dont listen to a lot of classical stuff, but I do enjoy Martins songs on that album. I actually listened to them the other day on my way into work.

I like it. It is far from outstanding, but I do find it relatively interesting.

Music's all right John, but you'll never make a living out of it.

I must admit I never really listened properly to it.

In terms of musical quality, I'd put it about on par with another Neoclassical work, Gustav Holst's "The Planets" suite, only it's more psychedelic. They're both among my favorite suites of classical music I've ever heard.

^"The Planets" is an amazing suite of music and one of my rare classical favourites but I'd personally rate it above Yellow Submarine...though it's been so long I may have to recheck now you have brought it up. heheh.

Bump? It was posted less than twenty minutes ago, and this thread was in no need of resurrection. Do you perhaps mean "I agree wholeheartedly"? :P

Bump.

I mean, yes  ;)

Be that as it may, I listened again to George Martin’s Yellow Submarine B Side, as we used to call it. In my opinion, it is certainly Sir George’s most interesting piece of work done during the Beatles years. To me, In My Life, George Martin Instrumentally Salutes the Beatle Girls, George Martin Plays 'Help' or even Off The Beatle Track are far behind Yellow Submarine. To my recollection, he borrowed a few ideas from other composers – like Grieg, for instance, but it is a true personal endeavour, for once.
