Title: Anyone know a good bass?
Post by: lennonlemon on February 01, 2005, 03:25:34 AM
I finally decided to start playing bass again, but my fender mustang seems to have damaged pick ups.

If anyone knows a good base $650 or under, can you tell me one.

I have long arms, big hands, and don't mind a heavy bass because I play standing most of the time.:)

well indica is DM's "Bass Man" :Dso he'd probably know some good stuff...:)
Or even the other musicians on this forum could be a great help, like Lenny pane, rickenbacker, Apple and more!
I dont know much with bass prices and all so my help wouldn't be very useful...sorry

i don't really wish for a rcikenbacker. it looks great, but it's probably mos suited for pick players. i play with fingers.

what am i looking for?
perhaps a fender, but i'm open to anything.

If your looking for a good bass I would suggest a US Fender Precision bass or a US Fender Jazz bass. Ultimately I would look for a 62' reissue Fender p- bass. The late great James Jamerson of Motown's legendary Funk brothers played one and he was one of the best finger style players I've ever heard. The bass also lends itself very well to slap style also. They can be found as cheap as $400.00 to $850.00us. So Lennonlemon where are you located? I may be able to put on a seller or a bass in your area, if your in the states. 8)

I agree, a Fender Jazz or P* Bass.
Ive got a P Squire, and its a great bass.
Jazz has a bigger body, and the neck is more slim.
I think Rickinbackers are great, but costly for what you get.

Fender is alot more versatile 8)

Totally agree with Ric n Indy on this one.Infact for that monet I would insist! lol...Get in touch with Ric 325 NOW!!!...Good luck dude!
I'm re-visiting Larry Graham (Precision) at the moment....What a funkster! Also The great Floyd albums use the classic precision..The list would be endless on what fantastic albums they appear on but they are reasons alone.
Try n get a US made model if you can..much better than the cheaper Mexican models....Ebay can get you a bargain and maybe a bass with some more character but it's probably best to try before you buy with that amount. Shop maybe the most sensible. ;)

I'm just wondering, but what do you guys think about a fender '51 precision bass. my friend knows a guy who's selling one rather cheap.

HOFNER (MCCARTNEY)

hofner's cost quite a bit too much for my current wallet.

the '51 is a reissue. they still sell them on many online music stores and they seem to be very popular. the look is great too.

The 51' P-bass reissue are good Instruments, They are mexican made, but still good quality. Is it the "Sting" Signature model?
By the way, here's the difference between a US made Fender and a Mexican made Fender.
The Mexican made fender is finished and assembled in Mexico out of American made parts by Skilled Mexican workers.
The US made Fender is fininshed and assembled in California out of American made parts by skilled Mexican workers :D......this is no joke its how Fender works.

I always find, for the price, the Mexican Fenders are a better deal.
One friend bought a Mex Fender, another a American Fender...we all agree, the Mexican plays/sounds better!
Its the kudos of having an American made Guitar..just a few more pennies..

Hmmm interesting i never knew that. I suppose I have listened to buds and mags too long. I own a 76 Fender precision. Sounds creamy but maybe it's cos they don't make em like they used to?
Hey Ric...So are the Tokai strats made in Japan better than the Koreans?...Whats your take?...You seem to have the knowledge. I certainly don't lol.

The Sting one is a little different i think. I didn't check out the specifications for the sting one, but they look pretty similar. just diffrent colors.

my friend just got a lite ash telecaster(cheap one made in korea, i think) and it palys great.

The only difference is the "Sting" Bass has "Sting's" name inlaid at the 12th fret otherwise its the same instrument. fender made in Korea are Squires and some of them are pretty good for the money. Also the 51' P-bass can be bought new for about $550.00 to $599.00 new so be careful as to how much you pay for a used one. 8)

Actually yes, the Tokai's made in the 1978 to 1991 were better than some of the Fenders being made at the time. Those Tokai's were dead on copies of 1950s and 1960s Strat's and Tele's. They are also quite collectible today and command premium prices at guitar shows and from dealers when they turn up. I just sold a 1984 Tokai "Love Rock" model which was their Les Paul copy for $900.00 us. and it was as nice as any gibson Les Paul I ever owned. So if you run into one of those older Tokai's and a good price, BUY IT !!!! You wont be sorry. :)

With a  hard case? Offer him $275.00 with out the case. If you really want it, I'd jump on it. Its a great instrument.
