" Rubber Soul " , just seems to get better for me with each passing year ,apart from the White Album ,it's the one Beatles record i play the most .
I never tire of it , i love all the songs and what great songs they are " Drive My Car " straight into " Norwegian Wood " what a brilliant introduction to an album ? and then it just keeps getting better :)
I love how this album as never losted any of it's freshness , it truely is a timeless masterpiece ,it's full of such bueatiful light and shade from the bouncy "The Word " to " In My Life "
What a brilliant album ,what a great group it all come's together for me on this album "Pure Magic " :)

I totally agree with that. This is one of my favorite albums, it was the first one I bought along with Abbey Road. The first time I heard it, I loved it, and I couldn't stop listening to it when I first got it. It truly is a great album.
-
My favourite album by a long shot. There's a mood/feeling running through it that makes it a joy. Not a weak moment.
I especially like the backing vocals - they're much more inventive than on the previous albums.
-
Quite incredible considering how fast it was recorded.
-
It's way up there on my list. I admit I bought Abbey Road first. Then the agony: Rubber Soul or Revolver? I think I broke down and bought them both!
But I think this album is from the Beatles at their great period-- still growing, still grooving together as a band, and pushing back the boundaries. Great songwriting excellently executed. *goes for a listen*

Sort of gives lie to The Beatles For Sale excuse of time pressures. Dylan and Dope baby.
-
I always think of this album as the " Blueprint " for all guitar groups " The Big Daddy " i can't think of any rock album that better's it for originality and many have tried ?
All roads lead back to " Rubber Soul "

That's easy for you to say!

Good grief is this board educational! From Beatles to Latin... who'd a thunk? ;D

Proper clever, we is.

It's the best album. Wait and Run For Your Life are a bit off though, the writing is alot more sophisticated on the album apart from them two. That's the first album that was looked on by The Beatles as being a work of art, it shows.

This is my favourite Beatle Album for both of the above reasons. Just fantastic.
I'm Looking Through You just gets me everytime :)

It goes very well with a smoke. You can hear it properly with a smoke, it has that atmosphere on it.

You can hear anything properly after a smoke ... or so it seems ;)

We'd better keep quiet, Kevin may start crying. It's been months you know. ;D

This is my 2nd fav Beatkes album ever (with Pepper at !), & i agree has the last 3 or
4 year's have gone by, i've liked it so much better & better!! :) I think the songs are
very very strong & i've always consided it way better than Revolver. i still struggle with
Revolver being this so-called classic album, i like teh album of course but it has a
lot of fillers on it for me (doctor robert, and your bird can sing, i want to tell you).
But Rubber Soul dosen't do that for me at all. Every song is such a classic. I still think
that Drive My Car has the greatest operning beginning's to any album. that guitar
& bass setting up this wonderful album! and the cover is so cool too!! :D ;)

Besides Revolver I think Rubber Soul is one of their best albums. They were evolving at that time and showed different styles and harmonies in most of the songs. Also George introducing the sitar in Norwegian Wood, something I've always found interesting and that shows how innovative they were.
-
As of right now 'Rubber Soul' is my favorite. 'Drive my Car' always puts me in a good mood and 'Noreweigen Wood' is just inspiring and I love them whole album. It does keep getting better.
-
yeah it does get better cause it never feels as if its dated, it fits in with todays music better than any other beatles album along with revolver,
-
Its a good album. Revolvers 10 times better, but its still a good album.
-
well the one b4 wasn't too bad either...i think help, revolver and rubber soul are the best three albums...help stands without the movie too.....i like them in the order of help, revolver then rubber soul but i think they are pretty much equal....
-
and the cover is so cool too!! :D ;)
RS truly does have an awesome cover. *happy sigh*
-
the cover is so cool too!! :D ;)

This is my favorite cover, I think.
-
Agree the album cover is very cool ,and their look is much imitatated , they just look so now :)
DaveRam :)
-
oh yes, Rubber Soul is a very cool album too! ;D ;)
-
Really this one...? :( Is this the best?
OK, fantastic album, But I think the 4 that came after this one (Revolver, Pepper, White & Road) were really better albums!
But the biggest change between one album and another was with Rubber Soul! No question for that! ;D
-
Rubber soul was their departure from their earlier stuff.

Do you really think the jump from Help! to RS is greater than that of RS to Revolver?
Plenty of RS songs would fit on Help! and vice versa. But when you hear Eleanor Rigby, Yellow Submarine, Love You to and TNK you think "woh. That's new."
-
I think the leaps The Beatles were taking creativly between records was breathtaking .
"Rubber Soul" stands by it's self and sets a brilliant bench mark for the great albums that follow.
Revolver as better songs on it ,as Pepper doe's in my opinion .
But "Rubber Soul " for me is faultless from beging to end and after listening to it now for 30 odd years , i just think it get's better with age .
DaveRam :)
-
Agreed. Rubber Soul has a sense of humour. They sound united and like they're really enjoying themselves. This rubs off on the listener. And all the songs are top notch - with nice switches from joyful rockers to country to introspection without any loss of continuity (that sounds like a real w*nk I know, but I can't think of better words).
I think they suffered a bit when they became all self-aware - this is just joyous uninhibited music- making with a bunch of excellent tunes. From Revolver on they become very self-conscious of what they were doing - still making classic albums - but that joy and innocence was gone.
As an album it sounds much closer to Help! than Revolver.(it too has introspection and non-rock instrumentation.) Maybe rather than representing a new beginning this is the last album by a band making music because they really enjoyed it, rather than because they were making "art" or trying to convey a message. And the dope didn't seem to hurt. Damn the dentist.
-
I really like this analysis, Kevin. It really rings true for me. "Joyous" vs "self-conscious" seems to fit the early Beatles very well. They didn't yet know they were a lasting phenomenon, they just wanted to have a laugh and play some tunes while people were still interested!
Damn the dentist.
Kevin, I started writing a diatribe on this, but decided to start a new thread instead. Thanks!

What a happy note to end on. Cheers, DaveRam!

Although some of the songs might fit in Help!, it is noticeable they were evolving.... songs like Norwegian wood using exotic instruments, Nowhere man... but yes in Revolver the change was huge.
-
Rubber Soul signaled the end of Beatlemania. I think it is the last time they truly worked together as a single unit. On Revolver both John and Paul are pulling apart music wise, and George is beginning to shine a little more. It's a great album, as much the end of an era as Revolver was the beginning of a new one.
-
I've always though of both Rubber Soul & Revolver as transition albums where The Beatles were evolving and their individual writing styles were emerging. Also the fact that George's contributions were more noticeable. But we can say that Rubber Soul marks the end of the Beatlemania era and Revolver was the beginning of a new one. Both albums are at the top of my list.

See, everyone has their own opinions! We can't all like the same
Beatles albums but of course we do critisize, so what can we do?? :-/ :)
I agree that Pepper & Abbey Road are masterpieces! :)

I know!! I was just giving my own opinion!
We don't like all the same for sure. For example, my father bought the original Let It Be box-set back in 1970, when he was young and pretty :) and it became his favourite Beatles album ever. To me Let It Be is their worst so... ;D
-
To me Let It Be is their worst so... ;D
Yeah, Let It Be has never been one of my fav's either.
Some great songs on it (i think Macca's are the stronger ones on it &
George's I Me Mine), but overall the album to me is pretty poor the way it holds
together. :-/ I still think they should have left Abbey Road as the Last Album!

Hee, that's great! It must be the approved line-up.
-
I think so, hh. I know it happened once before when I posted those pictures in a previous thread, but I couldn't resist posting them again.
I always felt that the somewhat somber original compositions on BFS reflected their desire to spend more time in the studio and express theselves more fully.

Wiki makes the interesting point that if you hold the Rubber Soul logo to a mirror it appears to say Road Abbey! (http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/50/120pxrubbersoulspellsabyl0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Oh God. Now you've started something!
Oh, that's brilliant. ;D
Actually, it appears to say "Road Yabbey". Why the extra "Y"? Is it pointing to the fork in the road, the change in direction the Beatles decide to take?
Of course, having just read the "George is a Rabbit" thread, I thought the first character was a stylized bunny head-- yet another clue to George's true nature. ;)

Yes, & these albums were released a couple of months before Rubber Soul &
they were both 1965 albums & great ones too! :)

I'm sure most people know that Revolver often wins critics "best album ever" polls, but I think Rubber Soul is at least just as good, so I built a site to prove it!

Enjoy!
-
Rubber Soul in both the UK and US incarnations is my favorite 1962 - 1966 period Beatles album. Everything with the exception of What Goes On and Run For Your Life are excellent songs. Even What Goes On and Run For Your Life are pretty good really, they're just weak compared to the best Beatles material.

going on that i scored 12-11 for revolver :O and here was me thinking i preferred rubber soul more.
maybe i prefer revolver song for song but as an album i get into rubber soul more
-
I scored 15-6 for Revolver but then I'm a huge Revolver fan.
Overall points are very close. Revolver leads Rubber Soul 1873-1810 with no less than 2773 points for tied songs.
Get in there and vote for your preferred album of the two, folks!

I'm a Rubber Soul fan:)

I love this album. I would have to admit it is probably one of my fav's along with Help! and Pepper's but this tops them all. even though this was I think when they started getting into drugs it's just so meaningful. It's so clear and like earthy. :)
