Title: Club Bass knockoff
Post by: Hugo Nash on February 04, 2006, 02:29:15 AM
Does anybody know of any knockoffs of the Hofner Club Bass? Like many young musicians, I don't exactly have ebough $$$ for a Hofner...

Maybe Indica was in that situation some years ago and could give you some advices since it seems that our mate An Apple Beatle is on holidays (I hope) these days  ...  ;D

In such a situation I would advise buying something more typical - as a cheap knockoff - is exactly what you're going to get. The look is important, but I found with the cheap look-alike models, it's just not worth it.

Well, that's my depressing advice 8)

I dont know about a Club Bass knockoff I have never saw one. I disagree though my Rogue Violin Bass knockoff is just as good as anything else I could afford.. (Squire, any other Rogue)

I want to get an SX though and put some new pickups on it.

Intruiging, Intruiging...the fact that I'm left handed doesn't really help the matter (although there's an abundance of left handed Viola basses, obviously). Maybe I should look for one of them. I see the Brice Viola basses are pretty cheap...anyone know if they're any good?

I have heard the Brice and Rogue are made in the same factory in Korea but I dont know, they look pretty identical. My Rogue has treated me well, I would say go with either if you want a cheaper violin bass. I have heard the Epiphone version isnt a true Semi-Hollow Bass.

In fact, Epiphone, Samick, Jay Turser, Rogue (the "muscians friend" house brand), Carlo Robelli ("Sam Ash" house brand) and several other brands are all built in the same plant owned by Samick, who builds for everybody. Interesting thing though, is I had a Rogue Hofner copy in my repair shop last week. I had to replace the bridge pick up and then the fellow brought it back three days later and I had to replace the neck pick up as it went dead also. I never had the same guitar loose both pick ups in one week.

Since you work in a repair shop, would you happen to know anyplace where I can buy hofner volume knobs and tuning knobs for my Rogue? I want to make it look as much like a hofner as I can.

A cheap guitar or bass is going to sound exactly that: cheap. Don't fall into the trap because they look good. If you're serious about playing it's worth saving for the guitar you want, not an imitation. It's like wanting Coca Cola but buying that disgusting imitation stuff because you don't have the money... and realising it's a load of cheap crap!

But the thing is.. Hofners were cheap Bass guitars in the 60's were they not? The only reason they got so expensive is because McCartney used them and made them popular.

You guys don't know how lucky you are for having a reply by RICKENBACKER325, as far as I know an authority in the matter (An Apple Beatle dixit)  ;)

I still got my Epiphone Viola. I really rate it. 'The Bee's' frontman Paul Butler told me that he had used the Epiphone on his first album 'Sunshine Hit Me'.

He kinda made it pretty big after that and bought a Hofner. He told me that for the extra money, you don't get the extra sound.

Me? I'm still very happy with my Viola. I do have a Warwick and a Precision aswell though. Sureley the Epiphone Viola could see you through right up to the point where you get real serious and getting better gig money' perhaps for a more expensive model. That my friend is entireley up to you. ;)

That's what I heard too. Also, the classic Rickenbacker 325 was on the verge of being discontinued until John popularised it - he bought it quite cheap in Germany originally in a light wood finish till he had it re-painted.

I heard the Epiphone Viola isnt truly semi-hollow is that true?

I would say it isn't. Still plays a beauty though. ;)

The fretboard is so rinky dinky and I have found it does (sub, aswell as consciously) get you plodding like Macca.

My only jibe is the finish of the wood and the headstock could be a bit more Hofner like but for that money what do you expect?

I compromised and I get both looks and sound. When someone wants to start paying me proper money for my Beatle performances then I may consider a 62 re-issue Hofner. Until then, this little beast is doin fine.

I wish the Guitar Center or local music shops around here would have the viola. I prefer Semi-Hollow body.. but I never know if I could just get to try one out.

Let me check on it and I'll get back to you. The only problem that might occur is that the pot shafts might be a different size than the knob openings and you might have to change the pots (volume and tone controls).

Ok thanks, I have another question :p.

Many people online have told me I can buy these Banjo tuner knobs (http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Knobs/Tuner_knobs/Banjo_Tuner_Knobs.html) They look a lot like the Hofner ones and they are only 75 cents each. A couple people who own the Rogue VB100 that I have, have said they fit on perfect. Is it really possible that they could fit? I think I am gonna do it, Its only $4 bucks for 4 of them. :D

Also try, "all parts.com", "wd parts", and also "parts is parts.com"  Just use you search engine. I almost forgot, try "jk luthiery.com" as well. Hope this helps. These places carry originals and reproduction parts

I thought you were talking about  vol. and tone knobs, any of places I listed could help you with tuner knobs, but I thinks "all parts" is your best bet and I think they have a wharehouse in the UK as well  "all parts uk"
