Let's Hear More Of It: "Day 3 -- Taxman"
« on: January 29, 2005, 04:31:09 PM »

Let's continue!

____________________________________________________________
Day 3: Taxman

They started this on the 20th April, but scrapped the whole lot and started from scratch the next day.  George wrote it after he found out that he was in a super-tax bracket -- which meant that he had to pay 96p in a pound!
"I don't kknow if I'll ever be a millionaire," he said, "We only get two bob [10p] from every 1 pound we earn, and that's split four ways -- sixpence each!" He also name-checked a couple of politicians in it, and they became the first living people to be mentioned in a Beatles record.
The 1-2-3-4 count-in is fake, and was edited on as an afterthought.  The real count-in (by Paul) can be heard underneath.  And the guitar solo at the end is a straight copy of the middle-eight.  (This same solo was later re-used as a tape-spool on 'Tomorrow Never Knows'.)
N.B.: The Kinks also released a tax-related song in 1966 -- their classic 'Sunny Afternoon' single.  But Labour-loving Ray Davies took the opposite view to George, and took the p*ss out of moany-old rich.

This song is my second or third favorite on Revolver, next to songs like Here There and Everywhere, Eleanor Rigby, and And Your Bird Can Sing.  It's SUCH a great rocker, one of their best openers, extremely catchy, very witty lyrics.... it's a masterpiece in lyrics, actually! Go George!

Thoughts? Opinions? Comments? I wanna hear them :)

These topics have gotten so many views and replies . I think it's a great way to expose some of the "bottom-feeders" (Not that any of these songs are bad -- they rule!).

Let's continue!

Taxman is one of my favourites.
The Mccartney Guitar, and Bass Line..almost Pauls songs :) with the cynical touch from George.
Great part on the Anthology, where Ringo says "which one of Georges is on?" and it kicks into the riff.

'Taxman' used to be one of my favorite Beatle tunes some time ago, but its slipped down the ladder some. I do love the witty lyrics (although helped out by John), the bass line, the lead, and the drums (hell, thats everything isnt it?). I also find this tune to be really fun to play on the drums. Great song.
