Just wondering:  Before the Beatles, were there any songs that sounded like them?  I'm trying to go back in time and think about this.  So, I think this means songs going back to 1962 and earlier.

Consider the fact that the Beatles were avid radio listeners so it wouldn't surprise me if you can hear the songs that they liked pre-fame influencing their songs somehow.

This may take a while, but I will be contemplating this topic and providing updates to this post as I think of possible songs that connect to the Beatles later compositions.

Hello Goodbye

Once again, Loco, you've come up with a great topic!

Excluding songs that The Beatles covered, we know that they spent a lot of time listening to Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard & The Shadows in the late 1950s...

...and were obviously influenced by them.

It's so interesting to hear these songs and to realize how much of a role they played in inspiring the Beatles.  The Beatles had an amazing ability to make other songs "their own."  I think there must be some Bobby Holly songs that influenced them as well.  I remember guitarist Duane Eddy being very popular at the time.  Dion and the Belmonts, too.  I'll have to listen more attentively to see if I can hear any connections to those artists.

One of the most beautiful songs of the Everly Brothers (IMO) is "Let it be Me."  Listen to the beginning and ending, so tender, so much feeling, so plaintive.  It can hurt your heart.  It does mine.
