Watching those vids ...I feel dreadfully sorry for Pete Best  :(

That guy had such a raw deal, after all the crummy gigs he did in flea bitten venues .......holy sh*t I just cant imagine what he felt when Beatlemania was happening.

And here's how Paul, John and George did it...

Beatles To A Tee    Rob Taylor

That Dm at the start of the bridge doesn't seem to be correct.

Should be an F or F7 imho.

Its a minor you can hear. Definitely goes to Dm imo Cor;

G              F                C            D
One day you'll look to see i've gone,
     C                     Em    D       G          C     F C
For tomorrow may rain so, I'll follow the sun
G                F                C          D
Some day you'll know i was the one,
      C                   Em     D       G          C    C7
but tomorrow may rain so, i'll follow the sun

                    Dm                        Fm                        C   C7
And now the time has come and so my love i must go
                   Dm               Fm                          C    Dm
and though i lose a friend in the end you will know, oh oh oh

For years, I played the bridge this way when playing this piece solo...

                  Dm7                    Fm6                       C   C7
And now the time has come and so my love I must go
                  Dm7           Fm6                          C   Dm7
and though I lose a friend in the end you will know, oh.....

...as it appeared in The Compleat Beatles:

It's apparent that Rob Taylor thoroughly researched the songs in his Beatles To A Tee DVD Series and even determined which guitars were used.  I'll Follow The Sun sounds correct with either  Dm7...Fm6  or  Dm...Fm  starting the bridge.  To my ears, Dm...Fm  and Dm on the "Oh......" sounds just a bit better especially when one considers that there is no acoustic lead in this song, as was mentioned in the Personnel Notes by Ian MacDonald, but rather a combination of John playing rhythm on his Gibson J-160E and Paul fingerpicking on George's Gretsch 6119 Tennessean.

Mmm, alright. I can live with a Dm7, as a mix between F and Dm. :)

F or F7 for the first two bars sound OK too, Cor, depending on picking style.  For rhythm guitar, Dm...Fm sounds best.

and here...

Thanks HG. They're both really lovely versions. It comes across  well in concert.  You're pointers to videos on all these threads are so good.

I think for the context of the song the minor chord feel to the opening of the bridge is important. The bridge is the sad "time to say goodbye" line which suits having a minor key feel. The verses have that more optimistic tone. even though he's telling her he's going it's got that aura of positive destiny around it.

If only it had modulated fully to Dm which as Nigel Tufnell will tell you is "the saddest of all keys".

Right, Moog.  Paul really phrased the lyrics of this song well with corresponding major-to minor-to major chord changes.  George also made frequent and effective use of minor chords to set a mood.

Kev, this is a great Song Of The Week.  It's amazing the discussion a short song can elicit.  Thanks for starting this series, mate.

There are some fine videos out there, Moog.  The HD videos of Paul's concerts are fun to watch and learn from.  There are some great guitar and bass guitar players out there who have put out some fine instructional videos.

The ultimate Beatles instructional videos are by Rob Taylor.  He's issued four Beatles To A Tee DVDs with in-depth discussions of the songs and tutorials showing all guitar parts (except bass).  He explains the opening chord to A Hard Day's Night and how George managed the lead guitar riff...

Beatles To A Tee (A Hard Days Night)

Another one of my favorite tutorials is And Your Bird Can Sing...

The Beatles - And Your Bird Can Sing (Beatles To A Tee)

He manages more than just an educated gusss on which guitars were played and takes the initiative to use those same model guitars in his DVDs.  He even dresses in period-correct Beatles wardrobe...

I like this song, but its failry mediocre. Its inoffensive enough that I enjoy it when I hear it, but again, I feel its only an average song.
