There was a song he sang about a castle.. or something like that... no wait! I remember it now! Crackerbox Palace... yes, I believe that's the title. I love that song, it's goofy but I love it.

Though his best solo work is All Things Must Pass. I also love Material World... and of course, My Sweet Lord! That's a great tune.

Awaiting On You All and Apple Scruffs could be stuff from their early years very well. I love the album and I've always wondered how it would be if it'd have been recorded by the guys as a unit.  :-/

Yes, it was, but with a definetely 60s touch. I was wondering what about the guys recording in 1970 George's stuff, with their touch,but... "the dream is over" (1970).

I miss some things: harmonies from John and Paul and Paul's bass specially. I don't like the production (damned Spector's Wall of Sound!) but I like the 200 o version George made.

George didn't like the production Spector made. It's old-fashioned, somehow. I like the 2000 version because of the production (no so many guitars) and the slide.

I'm quite fond of alternate versions of classics that George did with others.

Here Comes The Sun w/ Paul Simon
Dream w/ Bob Dylan
Anything from the Japan tour he did with Clapton

My Sweet Lord sounds like George embarking on his new solo career with the uptempo sound and that.

My Sweet Lord 2000 sounds to me like he kind of knows that it's nearly over, therefore he comes full circle with a slower more mournful remake.

Oh, good grief!  :D  Another impossible poll!

George's solo work is so varied, this list would have to be 20 choices long, and I still don't think you'd come close to picking everyone's favorites.

I'm going to be really rigorous and just pick:

ATMP 1: What Is Life and Let It Down
ATMP 2: Beware of Darkness and Hear Me Lord
Brainwashed: Pisces Fish and... and... the whole rest of the album!  ;D

Seriously, on both these albums, there's not a song I would skip (except the remake of MSL but that doesn't really count).

But as for songs that just come out of the blue, "Cheer Down". I still remember hearing that in the theatre and sitting bolt upright and saying "George!" (I think I even said it out loud.)  :B Great song, and always makes me feel happy.

Ooh, I love that one, too. I usually play it off the ATMP CD, and then follow it with the music-only version (because once is not enough).

The trouble with George's songs is that there are so many of them that I truly enjoy, it really depends on my mood. I can't say I have a clear favorite; sometimes one or another appeals most. Cheers!

this one is difficult... but the first solo-song i really fell in love with was ballad of sir frankie crisp. this one is amazing, as is give me love (this one can change my mood completely and makes me so happy sometimes) and art of dying.

including his beatle-songs too it must be while my guitar gently weeps. for sure.

Sorry, but Cloud Nine sold respectably when was released in 1987. I guess it sold 2-3 million copies, and provided a #1 US single and another Top 40 hit. Considering that Brainwashed was his first album since 2002 (and defnitely his last album, I mean, he's dead!  :B), it deserved to be at least an UK/US Top 10 hit. What a shame. Lack of promotion I suppose.  ::)

From good ol' Wiki :
"Part of Harrison's strategy for his comeback was making himself seen. He appeared with Starr at the Prince's Trust Concert that June performing "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and was actively involved in promoting the upcoming album."
I think on the basis of one hit the album did as well as expected.

I was never surprised that Brainwashed didn't sell that well. George was hardly a self publicity machine like Macca. He hadn't had a solo album out for 15 years, and The Wilbury's were long forgotten by that time. He'd done one short tour in Japan in the early 90's, and one gig at The Albert. Hardly putting yourself in the public eye.

I found Brainwashed recorded at 500,000 units, so it's probably got a gold listing somewhere, but as I can't remember the date that number is not very meaningful. (I can't find the source now in my files.)

Wingsman, where did you find the sales info for Cloud Nine?

I think most of the listening public lost its taste after the 60s, and we entered the Age of Confusion. There is no other explanation in my mind for the phenomena of disco and rap.

Fortunately, the other songs on Cloud Nine are so strong, I don't care (actually I do, but I'll pretend I don't) that what people wanted to hear was (steels self), "I Got My Mind Set On You". Buyers got "Cloud 9", "That's What It Takes", "Fish on the Sand" -- heck, the whole album is good. I even particularly enjoy the bonus track "Shanghai Surprise", to my complete... surprise. Wonderful arrangement. I don't want to ever see this movie; it might spoil the song for me. :)

It's radio programmers playing it safe: give the audience the same old thing they've liked before over and over again until they get sick of it and stop listening. Then give them something else over and over again until they get sick of that, too. And so on. By the sound of them, most radio stations have astonishingly short playlists.  :-/

Kind of a strange batch of songs to represent George's "best."

"That Is All" and "Not Guilty"?  Why no "Blow Away"? "Beware of Darkness"? "When We Was Fab"? Or some of his biggest hits, "Got My Mind Set on You" or "All Those Years" Ago"?

But my favourite would have to be "All Things Must Pass."

You're right, Dbone828, it's kind of a small list. Of the ones mentioned, "That Is All" and "What Is Life?" along with "Beware of Darkness" would be at the top of my list, followed by "Blow Away" and "All Those Years Ago". It really depends on my mood. But I like so many of George's songs, it's hard to choose. :)

All Things Must Pass, always. The lyrics are beautiful and the tune is gorgeous.

Art of Dying and That's What It Takes are very close seconds.

Solo? My Sweet Lord. I first heard the Billy Preston version during Concert For George; then I fell in love with the All Things Must Pass album.

Beatle song, though, is Blue Jay Way: http://www.simplybeatles.com/ (http://www.simplybeatles.com/)
I named my Beatles blog after that song.

Not sure if it's his "best" song, but one that always got me was "All Those Years Ago".  He was such a great, expressive slide player.  Something about the way he plays slide guitar on that song always got me a little teary-eyed.  Not only because it was a tribute to John, but just the slide guitar itself seemed to express everything people were feeling.  Great playing, and distinctive George.
