Lennon/McCartney or McCartney/Lennon
« on: August 12, 2004, 11:24:17 PM »

Does Paul have a justified case against Yoko Ono concerning the credits to their songs.

When it was one song, Yesterday, I thought he was perfectly within his rights.  Then he got petty, and greedy, and maybe it was just to p*ss Yoko off, but when he wanted ALL of his songs credited that way it was too much.

As it is now he has given up the idea.  He shoulda just stuck to Yesterday.

I agree with charlie. I guess Paul wanted his legacy protected, but I guess he didn't realize that people KNOW he wrote those songs and he doesn't have to worry about it. Am I making any sense here?

Sure.

Of course. WE know, but I think he was really looking ahead to his 'forever' legacy.

I refuse to vote in the poll because I don't think it matters. Besides, McCartney actually originally had his name first on some of the UK releases....

He had his name first on ALL Please Please Me releases.  The free world did not crumble.  Some are very very adamant against Paul's initial attempt, which is sill.y It IS his song, John himself washed his hands of it.  So why not?

But Yoko, just to p*ss him off, said no.  And then he got greedy and publickly confrontational.  Tsk.

IMO, it should be (and remain) Lennon & McCartney. Here's why I believe this:

"THEN" -- John and Paul had this agreement when they were young and, for whatever reason, John won out and had his name first. I think it made sense a couple of ways - Lennon started The Beatles, and it's alphabetical.

"NOW" -- You don't monkey around with tradition and history, especially when it comes to The Beatles. I think Paul's getting a little concerned as he approaches old age that he won't be remembered for what he wrote, but  what's done is done, and it's Lennon and McCartney, which is classic and the way it must be (like Simon & Garfunkel, Abbott & Costello, Laurel & Hardy, Gilbert & Sullivan, etc.... etc....)

If they had thought more about it way back when, it would have made sense to put the name of the Beatle who wrote most of the tune FIRST, or bill the person individually if there was only one writer. But Lennon & McCartney made this pact, and it should stick.

I think it's completely unimportant.

If McCartney wants his name first when he wrote (most of) the song, let him have it. It's childish, but I think he has the right.

But again, big freakin deal...

Big deal for what? McCartney wanting his name first, or for leaving it alone? I say "big freakin deal - leave it the way it was".

Why change such a trivial case, especially when Lennon & Mccartney (historically) has great substance and meaning.

I mean, we all know Paul wrote yesterday etc..
although I have a feeling the media circus may have over-blown the whole 'arguement'

Not just on the UK ones, my mom has a 45 of Love Me Do/P.S. I Love You, and it says McCartney/Lennon.
