Not heard too often on the airwaves is The Love I Saw In You Was Just A Mirage by Smokey Robinson And The Miracles released in 1967.

Hmm...I never heard that one before.

I Heard It Through The Grapevine is a landmark song in the history of Motown. Written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong in 1966, the single was first recorded by Smokey Robinson And The Miracles...

Gladys Knight & the Pips recorded the third version of the song which was released on September 25, 1967...

But it is a signature song for singer Marvin Gaye, who recorded his version of the song prior to the Pips but released it after theirs on October 30, 1968...

I remember Marvin Gaye's I Heard It Through The Grapevine dominating the airwaves in the fall of 1968.

Thanks for posting those, BF.

I remember hearing the Pips' version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine in 1967 but I didn't think too much of it.  1968 was a tumultuous year with the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert F. Kennedy, the ensuing race riots and the escalation of the war in Viet Nam.  Those opening bars of Marvin Gaye's version of I Heard It Through The Grapevine just sounded so pounding and sinister when I first heard it.  It still gives me chills when I hear it today.

Hi Hello Goodbye! You're very welcome! I love Marvin's version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," it has a great feel to it. What do you think of CREEDENCE CLEARWATER REVIVAL'S version of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine?" Here's one from LIONEL RICHIE & DIANA ROSS! Enjoy!

It's far out, BF.  All 11 minutes and 6 seconds of it!  I wouldn't mind if it ran twice that time.  It was CCR's answer to Rare Earth's Get Ready.
