That sounds fantastic Kev! I understand your concerns with the food and it's great that you have done so well with maintaining a healthy diet. You've been through a lot and you don't want to do that again! One thing I've read about for times like this is the 80/20 rule. If you can stay right on track 80% of the time then having a treat, the 20%, won't undo all your efforts and you're not consumed with thoughts of what you may be missing. My problem is keeping to the 20%!

Yup, that's me! Wow, that sounds like a fantastic cruise, Kevin. I hope you have a wonderful time.

One good way to burn off the calories from the continually offered delicious food is to walk around the deck -- much more fun than just a regular walk on land.  :)

Please let us know how it was when you get back!

Were both quite good at resisting Kelley, just a little treat here and there and what I learned about cruises also is choose the fish off the menu quite often and try not to eat many carbs, like bread & potatoes, I love nice fish so all should be ok :)

We did a lot of deck walking on the last cruise Kathy, and I visited the gym a few times which was right at the top of the ship, it mustve had the best view of any gym in the world, here it is;

This cruise is aboard the Golden Princess

Golden Princess is a Grand-class cruise ship with Princess Cruises that entered service in 2001. She is the sister ship of Grand Princess and Star Princess. She measures 109,000 gross tons and carries 2,600 passengers plus 1,100 crew members

Gorgeous! I mostly walked but did not go near the gym on the one cruise I went on a few years ago, but a view like that would definitely motivate me to hop on a treadmill or elliptical.

Golden Princess is a Grand-class cruise ship with Princess Cruises that entered service in 2001. She is the sister ship of Grand Princess and Star Princess.

Uh oh....She has two sisters? (Kidding -- Titanic, Olympic, and Britannic were all sister ships   ;)   )

Part of the reason I had a hard time resisting the food was that it was so easily available -- no cooking, no dishes to do. That's my idea of heaven.

Again, Kevin, enjoy!

I meant to add -- it was great to have my three kids turn off their phones for a full week. We have pretty strict rules about phone use, but it was still wonderful to have them lock the phones in the safe and spend their time playing games (board games, Ping-Pong) and get fresh air -- and, yes, actually talk.   ;)

It was that special kind of awful that had half Australia curling its toes cringing. My main memory is B list Australian actors speaking faux Australuan sayings that were clearly thought up by a non Australian screenwriter. .

I'm sure! I just read that the new Harmony of the Seas, purportedly the world's largest cruise ship, has 23 pools. That seems excessive to me. Six sounds like a much more reasonable number.  :)

I saw estimates of $250,000 up. I guess you're not buying a block of land. So it doesn't have the asset value of normal housing. Eventually the ship will be scrapped. An interesting point someone raised was where do you pay tax if you are a resident of the ocean.

And then after that there's the cost of living. Even if you go the "intimate meal at home" route I don't imagine that Fredy's Deli is known for its bargains.

maybe their are management costs like an apartment

when the building (ship) needs work

could be high

good point about the tax

Crowds of people gathered to watch at Port Canaveral, too, when I took that one cruise a couple of years ago.

Funny how that's been the case (i.e., crowds gathering to watch ships depart and arrive) since at least the early 1900s.

Again, great pictures, Kevin.  :)

Great! Ew, but stay away from Reno. Meet them in Vegas, which at least is classier tackiness. Reno is just a poor imitation of a Las Vegas wanna-be, although I have heard that there are some prestigious estates outside the city limits.

No, I take that back. Wendover is the creepiest city in Nevada.

Sorry, Kevin; I missed your post! I spent 5 years in a tiny town in Northeastern Nevada while my ex worked at the National Weather Service there. We went to Reno several times and Las Vegas a few times (as well as a lot of trips to Salt Lake City and Twin Falls, ID -- I am not a small-town girl!). Now I'm North Dakota.

I apologize for dissing Reno given that you met some nice people from there. I hope you get there someday. You and your wife are certainly well traveled!  :)

I do feel like a fish out of water out here. Also, everyone tells me I have an accent, like I'm from the Bronx or something, LOL. I think I sound just like them.

You should come out here! The state is in dire need of physicians, probably because nobody wants to come to such a cold and desolate state. It's not so bad, though.

I do feel like a fish out of water out here. Also, everyone tells me I have an accent, like I'm from the Bronx or something, LOL. I think I sound just like them.

I'm sure you don't.

I can imagine how desolate it is up there, Kathleen.  No, I'll stay put here.

Do you ever want to move back to civilization?

Oh, well, it was worth a try.  ;)

Do you ever want to move back to civilization?

Yes!! I would have raced back East -- where I could get a job in my field -- after my husband left. But the kids had already been to seven different schools in seven different years because of the multiple moves we made as he climbed his career ladder; I just couldn't force them to make any more changes. They were suffering enough. Also, now that they consider North Dakota their home base ( roll:) ) I will probably stay. I have a great group of supportive friends here, too.

I have to say, though, that going back East last summer was so great. It was so good to be back in home territory.

Squirrel chasing Chickens

It’s not just in the countryside here. Urban chickens have become a thing in the last 15 years or so. I knew about that trend but I never considered its corollary; that loose chickens had become a problem. They aren’t supposed to raise roosters but sometimes people wind up with them and some let them loose rather deal with it properly. I just happened to catch a show yesterday about Miami’s Chicken Busters. It looks like they are fighting a losing battle. I had to laugh but I sure wouldn’t want to deal with it!

Dock in Seattle,  then driving holiday San Francisco,  Yosemite, Vegas, grand canyon, LA then fly home

San Francisco is definitely at the top of my places to visit list. Lots of family history there. I can’t believe one of those relatives used to camp alone in Yosemite well into his 70’s. He wrote a book about it in 1949 and I was thrilled to find it on eBay. He told some incredible stories in those pages and maybe some of them were even true! ;)

P.S. I think I might have posted this already, but as soon as we got to the pier for our one cruise, this song came on the radio. My father was surprised that the kids (ages 14, 13, and 9) knew it.  :)

Nah; I'm a dedicated oldies fan, so they knew the original.

I hope you have a great time on your cruise!  :)

(From the book thread, October 1: Into the Raging Sea: Thirty-Three Mariners, One Megastorm, and the Sinking of El Faro. I couldn't put it down.)

I was shocked to read that the ship (a merchant marine vessel) had Titanic-style lifeboats -- on hand-winched davits, no less! Apparently the requirement of completely enclosed, more modern and easily launchable lifeboats have been required since 1986, but the El Faro got grandfathered out of that.

My favourite song of the sea, all about the never found Lord Franklin who set sail to find a route through the North West Passage

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysFKjWG_W54# (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysFKjWG_W54#)

In 1848, the Franklin expedition’s two ships, H.M.S. Erebus and H.M.S. Terror, disappeared with all their crew while searching for the Northwest Passage. Their fate is one of the enduring mysteries of the age of exploration. Numerous expeditions were sent out to find them, numerous theories proposed to explain what happened. Dark rumors of cannibalism only made the mystery more compelling. It wasn’t until 2014 that a Canadian mission, equipped with all the latest marine archaeological equipment, located Erebus. Terror was discovered two years later.

That's one of my favorite topics! Have you read Iceblink? It's fascinating. There are several excellent books on this topic. I read all about it before the ships were found, and now some of the hard-to-find books are being re-released and becoming easier to find.

I, personally, would never set foot on a ship called the Terror.  ha2ha

No, Ive only read whats online Kathy.
I got interested in the subject through the song, which I first heard in the early 70's when I saw Pentangle live. They were an excellent sort of folky band.
I will seek out Iceblink though. :)

I liked Rods early 70s rock stuff. Up to around A Night on the Town. After that I think he fell in love with his own image as superstar pop idol.

 ha2ha

We just got home after our big 6 week holiday and just slept for 10 hours straight.
Had a wonderful time with lots of memories of wonderful places met many new American friends and met up with some old friends I will try to post some pictures of our trip soon.

Basically the itinerary was.... Fly from Brisbane to Las Vegas spend 6 days there visiting various places like the Grand canyon Hoover dam route 66 then fly to Toronto spend the week there with friends visiting places like Niagara Falls then a train ride to Montreal spend 4 nights there seeing what there was to see in this beautiful city of Montreal then travel to Quebec city where we boarded a cruise ship and next day we were able to explore old Quebec city which is absolutely stunning.
Spend 2 weeks sailing down the eastern coast of Canada and the USA stopping at various ports like Boston for the day and ending up at fort Lauderdale where we spent 2 nights and then taxi down to Miami where we spent another five nights after which we can home.... it's a bloody long way home lol

Great holiday though I recommend it when you retire to do things like this.

Welcome back, Kev! I’m glad you and Gwyneth had such a wonderful time. My husband has been obsessed with taking a cruise! I think he’s pretty much got it all planned out already. I am afraid to even think about it, let alone discuss it because, well, life has always been what happens to me while I’m busy making other plans.

I was surprised at Boston, didn't know it was so nice, very clean also. Bar Harbour is also very nice but wasn't fussed with Portland.
Miami was stinking hot, most people (60% I think) speak Spanish as a first language.

Having grown up in the suburbs of Boston but living in Atlanta for 29 years now I get your surprise of Boston.  It is a terrific city with so much history and coolness.  I have a few coworkers that have recently had trips to Boston and they come back with your reaction too.  Add in the fresh seafood, wow.

Do you both have any symptoms, Kev?  If not, ask that you both of you be given PCR tests and not "rapid tests" which are not very accurate.  Your positive tests might have been rapid tests.

Yes, both feeling aches, tiredness, coughing. Getting better now. It's a strange illness. Probably a lot milder due to the vaccinations we had.

No PCR tests but had 2 RAT tests each, both positive.

We didn't get to do our follow on 5 day cruise and arrived home yesterday. They will refund those days though.

I'm sad to hear that you both couldn't enjoy your long-awaited cruise, Kev.  The refund will be of some solace, but still you were both looking forward to this cruise.

The post-vaccination COVID-19 infection typically lasts 5-6 days with symptoms similar to yours and then those individuals test negative with PCR.

Thanks Kelley.
It wasn't so bad really we had the first 7 days of the 10 day cruise without problems. We were having a great time.
Then on day 8 we started to feel a tingling in the throat. Then day 9 we felt a bit crook. We had to go to the medical centre for a covid check as we were booked on the next cruise (same ship) for 5 days.
Test was positive so they told us we were'nt going on the 5 day cruise and our final day we spent in our cabin. Free room service, movies, internet etc.
We just been told by email we will get the 5 day cruise refunded plus the 1 day we were isolated.

Covid is a strange thing, like nothing I've had before. No sneezing, no runny nose. One minute you're ok next minute you feel like you need to lie down. Can't smell anything... yet my nose is clear !
Should be fine next week. (from what I've read).

Got another cruise booked 20th January !

It sounds like you’ve been treated very well by the cruise line. They know you’re good customers! You’re right; COVID is strange. I still can’t believe I didn’t catch it from my Kevin when he had it. He took precautions once he knew he was positive but I was still amazed every time I tested.
