Hoopla!
« on: March 11, 2016, 06:12:34 AM »

The library system I work for is trying out a service called Hoopla. Patrons can borrow e-books and audio books but the really cool thing is the music. So far I've listened to the new Georgefest album, Neil Young's Harvest and, right now, The Carpenter's debut album. There's an incredible amount to chose from. But I seriously doubt our library will opt into it.

There's a place for you and a place for me,
it's the local public library.
They have books and things that they lend for free
It's the latest, it's the greatest, it's the library.

Educational, informational,
Entertainment that's sensational.
It's a way of life, it's for you and me
It's the latest, it's the greatest, it's the library.

They have histories, they have mysteries
And for mothers, books of recipes
See a movie show, hear a symphony
It's the latest, it's the greatest, it's the library.

Kelley, there was a TV and radio ad campaign for public libraries in the late 60s.  Those are the lyrics to The Library Song used in the campaign.  I couldn't find a YouTube video for it but go to this website where you can see the sheet music and listen to the instrumental accompaniment:  The Library Song

The song was sung by a boys and girls choir in the original commercial.

Neat! Maybe someday that will show up on YouTube. I would not be surprised to find a copy of that sheet music somewhere in our library. You'd love it there Barry; it's like this big uncurated museum. I love digging around upstairs. I found a court docket from the 1880's and a book that one of the town's original settlers carried with him when he walked into town in 1830. And I haven't looked through very much yet.

Well, Kelley, I just found The Library Song on YouTube with a boys and girls choir and full orchestra accompaniment.  It was easy to find once I included the names of the writers in my search...

School kids knew this by heart in the late 60s.

You've probably heard this one by Tom Chapin before...

Only when I saw a video of it in the sidebar on YouTube. LOL It was performed at a library that was celebrating its 90th anniversary. It's funny; none of the singers I've seen at kid's library programs have ever sung library songs! The only library song I remember was one from Sesame Street.

Things are different today...

;)

Hmm... Whatever works!

I think you should buy the CD, bring it to work along with your boom box, and play it loud!        ;D

He's actually a pretty neat guy! He's a children's librarian in Wilmington, Delaware. I'll bet he'd be a riot at a library convention!

I'll bet his library is Standing Room Only.  Kids in Wilmington are lucky!
