John Lennon death anniversary commemorated around the world (PHOTOS)

John Lennon, the former Beatle, was killed on Dec. 8, 1980. Since then fans have gathered to commemorate his death around the globe. On Dec. 8, 1980 the world of music was changed when former Beatle John Lennon was murdered in front of his home in New York City. Lennon, 40 at the time, was standing in the entrance of the Dakota building, his home, when xxxxxxxx fatally shot him in the back. Immediately following his death an outpouring of fans around the world gathered in candlelight vigils to mourn."Now that John's a spirit, he has a different effect on people than when he was alive," Lennon's widow Yoko Ono, 78, said to the Vancouver Sun on the 31st anniversary of her husband's death. "Spirits talk on a pure level and don't get distracted by people saying things like, 'That's nice, but why's he wearing that?'" she says in a slightly weary voice that betrays the midnight hour. "Of course, it would still be better if John was around."

And then there were four: Ringo picks up his paintbrush

The drummer has followed the example of his fellow Beatles by turning his hand to art. His multicoloured revolver statue, unveiled yesterday, is a tribute to John Lennon. But what will it do for his own creative reputation ? Asked to gauge Ringo Starr's musical abilities, John Lennon joked: "He's not even the best drummer in the Beatles." But could the drummer yet prove the finest artist among the prodigiously-talented group after unveiling his first public sculpture? Starr, 71, yesterday unveiled his own artistic tribute to Lennon, on the 31st anniversary of his former colleague's murder. The statue was Starr's own take on the "knotted gun" sculpture which stands outside the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The original bronze work, Non-Violence, with its distinctive twisted gun muzzle, was created by Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd as a memorial tribute to Lennon after he was shot on 8 December 1980 in New York.

Ringo pleas for tougher gun laws

Ringo Starr called for harsher sentences for those caught carrying guns on the anniversary of John Lennon’s death today. The former Beatle asked for “peace and love” at a Non Violence Foundation event, where he unveiled a psychedelic “knotted gun” statue, which he had designed on his iPad.He said: “I think it should be that if you’re caught with a gun or before you use it that it should be a higher sentence than what they get now.“I can’t stand up and dictate to the world it’s over; no more guns. I can just do what I do, and there’s another side to the story which is peace and love.”

For Yoko Ono, John Lennon's spirit still soar

John Lennon left this earth on Dec. 8, 1980. But the way Yoko Ono sees it, the Beatle's joyously populist specter has never been busier."Now that John's a spirit, he has a different effect on people than when he was alive," Ono, 78, says during a call from Tokyo, where she'll attend a concert of Japanese musicians performing her husband's works."Spirits talk on a pure level and don't get distracted by people saying things like, 'That's nice, but why's he wearing that?' " she says in a slightly weary voice that betrays the midnight hour. "Of course, it would still be better if John was around."

John and Yoko, as Never Before Seen: New Photos from the Famous ‘Bed In’

In 1969, Stephen Sammons was a 20-year-old aspiring photographer living in Montreal. A friend of his worked at an avant-garde film magazine and had scheduled an interview with the artist Yoko Ono, who was in town with her husband John Lennon to host a “bed-in” for peace. Sammons was invited to come along and take photos. Lennon and Ono had already hosted one bed-in while on their honeymoon in Amsterdam earlier that year. Modeled after a sit-in, the famous couple sat in their bed for hours and talked about the need for world peace. Lennon would later recount the experience in the lyrics to the Beatles’ song “The Ballad of John and Yoko.” “It was a very interesting, cool sort of scene,” Sammons recalls. Lennon and Ono occupied a suite of rooms at Montreal’s Queen Elizabeth Hotel and dozens of friends, journalists and other hangers-on—including Timothy Leary and comedian Tommy Smothers— dropped by throughout the day to visit. Sammons stayed all day long and says he doesn’t remember seeing Lennon or Ono ever get out of bed. “And then sometime in the afternoon, Lennon started writing this song,” he says. “He scribbled down the song lyrics and then started playing the tune.”

Book Review: 'The Lennon-Bronte Connection' takes you on a fascinating journey

Today is the 31st anniversary of John Lennon’s death, and  it seems fitting to discuss a new book that explores his past lives The Lennon-Bronte Connection, by Jewelle St. James, (St. James Publishing, 2011) investigates clues that former Beatle John Lennon was the reincarnation of tragic poet Branwell Bronte. This is the sequel to her first book, All You Need is Love, in which Jewelle discovers—and documents--her own past-life romance with Lennon in 17th century England. (Read about All You Need Is Love here)

John Lennon's Last Interview
The artist's joyous, inspiring and subversive conversation with Rolling Stone three days before his death

This story is from the December 23, 2010 issue of Rolling Stone. On the evening of Friday, December 5th, 1980, John Lennon spoke to Rolling Stone editor Jonathan Cott for more than nine hours at his apartment on New York's Upper West Side and at the Record Plant recording studio. Three nights later, Lennon would be murdered as he was returning home from a mixing session. The interview had originally been scheduled to run as the cover story of the first issue of 1981, but after Lennon's killing, Cott instead wrote an obituary for Lennon and ended up using very little from their conversations. In fact, he never even fully transcribed his tape. On the 30th anniversary of Lennon's death, we present, for the first time, the full text of Lennon's last major print interview: the joyous, outrageously funny, inspiring, fearless and subversive conversation Lennon shared with us that night, as he was preparing to jump back into the limelight after five years of private life with Yoko and their young son, Sean.

Welcome to the inner sanctum!" said John Lennon, as he greeted me with high-spirited, mock ceremoniousness in Yoko Ono's beautiful cloud-ceilinged office in their Dakota apartment. It was December 5th, 1980. I sat down on a couch next to Yoko, and she began telling me how their collaborative new album, Double Fantasy, came about: The previous spring, John and their son, Sean, were vacationing for three weeks in Bermuda while Yoko stayed home "sorting out business," as she put it. While in Bermuda, John phoned her to say that he had taken Sean to the botanical gardens and had come across a flower called a Double Fantasy. "It's a type of freesia," John would later say, "but what it means to us is

Ten Story Love Song - John Lennon's Top Ten

December the 8th is here again (ain't been round since you know when...)31 years ago today, John Lennon, arguably one of the 20th centuries most interesting, and most paradoxical stars was gunned down by a demon on a New York street.Doubtless today's papers, magazines, blogs and various online media will be filled with messages of peace, love and understanding...nothing funny 'bout that. However many will present the annual token deconstruction of Lennon's 'genius'. Some will refer to him as Gandhi, Jesus, or even a God- like figure (the irony is not lost), while others will counteract with the usual comments that he was a cruel and aggressive a**hole who turned his back on his first family and served his own interests first. None of the former group is true of course, while some of the latter certainly hold water.

John Lennon fans in Los Angeles celebrate his life at candlelight vigil

In Los Angeles, as well as Liverpool, fans of John Lennon gathered yesterday to celebrate his life on the date of his death in 1980. In downtown L.A. next to the historic Capitol Records tower where the Beatles held a press conference in 1965, fans held a candlelight tribute with music and speeches. Jerry Rubin, organizer and emcee for the event, told us, "Fans of John Lennon and the Beatles placed flowers, candles and peace messages around Lennon's Hollywood Walk of Fame Star. The fans formed a 'Circle of Peace' around the star as 'Imagine' played over the sound system," he said.
