Protest Songs
« on: September 07, 2005, 09:38:47 PM »

I was just wondering, what are some of your favorite protest songs from the '60s and '70s? besides Dylan that is, he's an obvious choice.

Sky Pilot, by the Animals.

A sharp and bitter song. Although conceived as an anti-Vietnam song, it has a timelessness about it that all great "protest songs" must have.

And although the thread-starter said "besides Dylan", I'm going to say Masters Of War and Hard Rain by the maestro. Masters of War is so direct, so unsubtle, you can feel the hatred for the war masters in every syllable Uncle Bob sings. Hard Rain, on the other hand, has an air of sad bewilderment around it, that humans could do such things.

The trouble with some protest songs is that they become campfire sing-alongs. Sadly, Blowin' In The Wind is in that category for me. I wonder how many people that sing it actually listen to the lyrics?

I know what you mean about Blowin' in the Wind, Ydoll. It's my favorite Dylan song (everybody's favorite, but whatever) and my relatives are always asking me to perform it for them because I can sing it really well.
But I'm thinking... it shouldn't be about how well you can sing it, it should be about whether you really agree with what you're singing, or listening to.

I listened to a tape of Dylan with the Tom Petty band in the 80s doing "Masters of War."  He was pretty ferocious even in a "down" period.  He did "Hard Rain" in the same set and it still sounds brilliant--in some ways better than the LSD-inspired work of a couple years later.

"Hollis Brown" is also an amazing early song (that he did at Live Aid with Keith Richard and Ronnie Wood on acoustics sitting with their backs to the audience at Bob's feet.)

"It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" is a great protest song.

Other great protest songs:
"Vietnam" by Jimmy Cliff (probably early 70s)
"Israelites" Desmond Dekker
"Street Fighting Man" The Stones
"Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" Pete Seeger
"There But for Fortune" and "Power and Glory" Phil Ochs
"Universal Soldier" Donovan
"Fortunate Son" CCR
"The Man in Black" Johnny Cash
"What's Going On" Marvin Gaye
"Strange Fruit" (older, re. lynching) Billie Holliday
"Deportees" Woody Guthrie and others
"I Come and Stand at Every Door" Pete Seeger, Byrds (re. Hiroshima)

1-2-3-4 by Country Joe and the Fish.
I think 'Abraham, Martin, and John' by Dion had a good underlying message.
And of course "You Broke My Heart, So I Busted Your Jaw" by Spooky Tooth.
