Favorite Songs:

God Only Knows

The only albums I have are Pet Sounds and Surf's Up, (a compilation I think) so I don't know if I can really claim to be a huge fan.

God Only Knows is a classic....Up there with the best of Beatle songs imo. Other than that they are ok....I hope MAcca and Wilson really come up with something special when they finish their collaboration.

Type in "brian wilson smile review" on Google and you'll find plenty.

My opinion is that it's totally crammed with excellent melodies and arrangements, but that it's overall just a little bit too weird, chaotic and excentric. It's a bit hard for me to listen to it from start to finish, but it's endeniable that "Smile" is the work of a genius. Also, the album is very well performed, but listening to the Beach Boys version of "Our prayer" and then to the new version proves yet again that the Beach Boys were untouchable when it came to their harmonies.

I agree with BiscuitPower concerning the Smile album..........it's not up their with Pet Sounds or anything, but definitely worth hearing.

As for The Beach Boys, they're hard to top.......while they don't have that many consistent albums, their large number of classic singles makes them one of the most influential and popular bands ever.

Cool. I figured out how to play Good Vibrations, California Girls and some of the simpler old songs on bass yesterday. I think the bass parts are a lot more interesting to play than the guitar parts.

I play my bass with a pick just to have that "click-boom" sound of the bass parts. The chorus of Good Vibrations has that jazz walking line which is really fun to play.

I started playing bass about 8 years ago, but I still haven't decided if I like playing with a pick or without one better. I like the tighter, percussive sound of playing with a pick, but without a pick you have better control over your instrument.

Obviously, there's a different tone from a pick player versus a fingerstyle player. I started playing with my thumb. It was easier for me to play with my thumb. When I heard Pet Sounds, things changed. I just like Carol Kaye's bass playing on that record. The problem with the bass on Pet Sounds is that it's often more difficult to pinpoint which of the bass lines to praise in any given song. They're such a part of the soundscape and the arrangement that it's not as easy to single out .
Here Today is my favorite.

i play bass myself and i personally enjoy the freedom of playing with fingers, rather than the percussive sound of the pick. however, i'm not going to preach about how fingers are better and how it  gives you a better feel for the instrunment, like many bass players in other forums do. i guess it's all about personal preference. if you can rock with a pick, then do so.

also, i think some songs are better fitted for picks than fingers.

I depise how many people compare The Beach Boys to The Beatles.

Maybe it's hard to understand the comparison if you only know the early & simple "Surfin' USA" kind of material that the Beach Boys made (which I just assume you do), but I think that albums like "Pet sounds", "Friends", "Today!", "Sunflower" and the "Smile" bootleg can compete with The Beatles' best work.

Well, there isn't a lot of Beatles/Beach Boys comparisons on this board. In fact all the topics regarding the Beach Boys feature discussions between myself, Biscuit Power. An Apple Beatle, Lenny Pane and others discussing everything from favorite songs, bass playing, Pet Sounds, Brian's genius, Brian's past and everything in between so discussions about Beatles/BB  just happens because some of us are fans of both bands.

I'll grant you that on occasion some of us (including myself) might be a bit passionate in our defense of Brian and the Beach Boys because a lot of us want to break that image of "the surfing doris days"...

Later..

:) The reason for the comparison between both bands is again in the mid 60s both The Beach Boys and The Beatles were in heavy competition with each other.
