OK, so the lyrics of 'Hey Jude' are usually given like this, in four lines.
(And Paul originally wrote it like that.)
Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better
But, if we look at rhymes, then the situation changes:
Hey Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better

So, if we re-arrange the lyrics to emphasize the rhymes, we get this:

I have to say, the above lyrics never made sense to me. If you let someone get under your skin, that's a bad thing that will make the situation worse. Perhaps in British/European cultures the phrase means something different (or perhaps just poetic license on Paul's part?). Awesome song, either way.

I think it can also mean to let someone become a part of you, like this song:

You're welcome Kathy! I had my own thing with this song. I mentioned this before but I always wondered about "For well you know that it's a fool who plays it cool". I processed it as just "Well, you know"..and thought "For" made no sense. And going back even further to when this was a current song on the radio, I thought the lyric was "letter under your skin". I remember wondering how to write letters under my skin. LOL

Or can it also be about the song? But, you usually 'get a girl' if you 'go to get her'. Or, again - is it about the song?

Anyway, I did a poetic rendition into my language (which is Slavic). It took me some time - first, constantly listening to the song, and then doing the work of translation.
The lines from the first verse are repeated in the last verse, with a slightly modified lines:
1st:
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better.
6th (last):
Remember to let her under your skin
Then you'll begin to make it better.
Then I thought: why not have both lines, 'into your heart' and 'under your skin' in the last verse?
So I did the translation like that - I've combined the two lines and I liked it how it sounds. :)

Ah! The importance of punctuation!
"For well you know" is not the same as "For,well,you know".
"For well you know" is a bit of poetic license to say "Because as you know very well".
"For,well,you know" is a much weaker line where he appears to be hesitating with the "well" as a word introduced to buy time.
I agree that this line is one of the best in the song with the idea that being "cool" makes you "colder" and more likely to be physically ill by not expressing your emotions.

That's one of my favorite examples, Kelley! I am always pointing out to my kids (all three of whom, I suspect, are getting mightily tired of my tirades ;D ) examples of how punctuation can vastly alter the meaning of a sentence.

I'm pleased you agree.
In fact I like the way most of the song holds together by the idea of healing someone. "I'll make it better' is what you say to a child who needs comforting maybe because he has just hurt himself. But the song goes beyond physical pain.It's both mental and physical.And for once I think maybe Lennon was right when he said it was partly aimed at him and his relationship with Yoko.
It's almost as if falling in love is a kind of illness which can only be cured by giving in to it. The girl in question is an antidote to the pain. Everything will be OK if you let the antidote under your skin and into your heart, but to do so you have to acknowledge you're human and can't always be responsible for everything and everyone out there in the world.
The song of course came out in 1968 when revolution was in the air. On the B side of the single Lennon sings 'We all want to change the world' but on the A side McCartney sings 'The movement you need is on your shoulder'. That's to say, it's not a political movement that will heal you but a physical, loving relationship.
Incidentally I've just noticed in the middle of Paul's song is something that obviously inspired John : Hey Jude don't let me down!

Ha, love it. I may even print that off. Hey Jude is far and away my favourite Paul song. It represents his personality and melodic talent really well. Just pure joy and escapism, especially with the extended outro. I also think I Want You (She's So Heavy) is its antithesis. One is upbeat and joyous, the other is dark and obsessive. One gets quieter, the other gets louder and stops abruptly. A very good contrast between Paul and John's personalities, I feel.
