Title: Bass or Electric guitar
Post by: Wordno on June 27, 2005, 03:05:00 AM
I want to get a guitar, but I'm not sure which one I want to get. I think too many people have electric guitars so I don't want to jump on that band wagon.  But too many Bass players go unnoticed(except Paul McCartney and a few others).  Which one would be a better choice?  I'm leaning toward a bass guitar but I'm still not sure.

Electric guitars are magnets for the opposite sex. ;)

I think if you're just planning to play on your own, a guitar is a better choice. If you prefer playing in a band, a bass-guitar can be good, specially if you want to make something special out of it. It is a fact that good bass-players are hard to find to join in a band, guitarists are like an epidemic: they're everywhere.
As an attraction to the other sex: I've been playing in a band for 24 years now, and never ever did the other sex like me because of me playing guitar... I guess it's me looks... But they did like me as a singer! I known that the other sex is very often attracted to the cool-looking bassplayer. That might be a reason for choosing the bass-guitar.

Bass if you want to play in a band. I mean you can get going with a band relatively quicker with a bass rather than a guitar. As has been well said, a guitar is better personal company generally speaking.

No matter what instrument you play...It's all about how you feel and vibe it. ;)

I started playing guitar 10 years ago and bass 2 years later, I still play both instruments regularly. I definately prefer guitar, but I couldn't miss my bass either.

The aforementioned comments about bass being better if you want to play in a band is true. I took up guitar because I'm a bit of an... ahem, control freak and I wold probably want to go solo or be the leader of the band. Which brings me to the other point that guitar is good if you want to play solo.
Whatever instument you pick, I'm sure you'll have fun with it, though.

I'd love to be the leader of a band, but unfortionately I'm the worst singer in music history, so that's not gonna happen...

Bass all the way, I play guitar just for fun but I could live without my bass.

Which instrument attracts you more? Dont play an instrument just because of picking up dates or what population plays something the most. Those reasons sounds kind of silly to me.

It's all a matter of taste. Pick up the instruments and give them a try. Which instrument do you get more of a kick out of it?

I personally prefer the bass. They may not come in as many cool designs as the guitar or get as much recognition, but the sound just touches me in no way a guitar is able to do.

The only set-back is that I find it rather difficult trying to write songs with a bass.

Yeah. If you wanna write songs, get a guitar or a  piano.

My main reason for starting on the guitar before bass was that I was affraid that people would think I was too stupid to handle 6 strings at once.

Playing bass can be just as hard as playing guitar, but a lot of people think that playing bass is much easier cause you don't have to know any chords.

I took up bass because someone had to. I was that good that at one gig I played the 1st three songs not plugged in (twas a festival and I was nervous as f***k) and noone, including the rest of the band, seemed to notice.

I've played both. Unless you're a genious, all you do with a bass is play a few strings, IMO. However, there are some fun basslines. It's all repetition. I like guitars because you can play chords, solos, riffs, and have fun. Sure, there are TOO MANY guitar players, and if you get a bass you may have an easier way to a band -- Everyone needs a bass.

Hey, to who said bass is easier due to chords, the chords are not THAT hard, in fact, I only play chords, and I always play chords anyway. For bass, you need scales. Though a guitar is worth it.

That actually happened to me too once.

And fortionately ::) someone filmed that show and put the video on internet... It's probably still floating around somewhere...

I'm feeling the bass more than a guitar.  I watched two videos of each being played and I'd liked the Bass better.  One problem that makes me hesitant to get one of the two is the fact I have no musical experience.  A guitar(both bass and regular guitar) looks hard to play.  I don't think I'd be able to do it or if I did I will suck so bad.  Is a guitar really hard to play as it looks?

Well, it's hard at first, but if you work at it, soon it will come easily to you.

the only reason i say bass is boring, is because they dont solo nearly as much as guitar, i still like bass

But, I still like guitar better, i have 2 guitars and my freind has a bass , and im glad i have the guitar and not the base

It's not like you are expected to play like Hendrix (or Pastorius, depending on the instrument) as soon as you pick up the instrument. It takes time, but in the end you are greatly rewarded.

Not to mention, guitar and bass are pretty simple instruments to learn.

Well I'm still deciding whether or not to get a guitar or not.  But I decided if I do that I'm going to get a Bass guitar.  This is the one I chose

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=bass/search/detail/base_pid/508160/

I have to say I'm a little nervous because I won't really know what to do with it.  Luckly their is a guitar shop that gives out lessons five minutes away from my house.  But after lessons I won't really know what to do.  Can you guys please give me some reasons why I should buy it?  The guitar is on sale so I don't have much time to make a decision.  Thanks guys

Personally, just making contact with my bass and playing it (not much more to do) gives me great joy. Whether I'm playing someonelse's work or messing around with it and creating something original, it is never the same and I never get bored.

Not everybody wants to be a rock star, but there are still many good reasons besides looking at playing as a career option.

-It helps keep my mind off petty problems I'm facing. If it's a big problem I'm probably writing about it. :-D

-Reading notes and trying to get the right hand positions has made me more attentive, not only when playing but in general.

-In the long run it's probably going to be cheaper than spending hours in front of the tele or playing your Nintendo.

-It's one thing to listen to your heroes play great music, but to play their music gives you a whole different feeling. A bit euphoric sometimes.

-Helps you meet new people you might never have met if you didn't share a common  interest in bass or playing music. A jam is always a nice way to get together and enjoy your time.

-THE OPPOSITE SEX DIGS IT!!! :-D

Maybe I'm stupid or something but what does that mean? lol

Anyways, I picked a bass guitar a long time ago. I have the VB Rogue bass that was on that link I posted. Saturday(The 12th) was actually my very first preformance infront of an audience. I  have to say wow! It was such an amazing experience! I was so awesome! After I was done random people came up to me complimenting me on how good I was and got a lot of compliments for my bass guitar. It was such a rush to be on stage and playing(I played the Red Hot chilli peppers-Suck My Kiss) and just feeling so damn cool. I read all the comments on this thread and realized I've come a long way since I made this thread. I had one comment that actually said "I'm afraid that if I pick up the guitar that I'll suck horribly at it" and wow this was not the case at all. I don't want to sound arrogant but I'm always getting complments on my playing and my guitar teacher was actually confident in my to let me play with him and his band on saturday. I can't wait to be infront of an audience again ;D

Well, the sequence is:
(for the chorus - - two bars each)
E  G
E  G
(for the verses - two bars each)
E  G
E  G
E  G
E  G
(and for the middle eight - two bars each)
F  G
F  G  E

Yep, a belligerent song ... but don't judge a song for the chords! Tomorrow Never Knows!  ;)

Fricking awesome, indeed!  :D ... that song is an old one of mine (it's from 1998, but it's far from being my first one)
Most people begin with CFG or CGR ... common sequences in whatever the order is!

Good luck and success with your future performances!  :)

Congratulations on your first public performance, Wordno! That is awesome!

I hate being in front of an audience. I get all uptight and my voice goes wobbly. I've been getting better now that I'm older, but for me it's easier to avoid the stagefright in the first place than try to fight my way through it. It's so cool that you're jazzed by performance. I envy you! Cheers.
