Oh yeah... that IS very dodgy! Unless you're PC - he openly admits to being Slick Rick as well, so that's cool :)

I assume you mean the people who pretend to be someone completely different, to find out info from you.

Hey can anyone tell me if you can tell if two computers are in the same town?

Like lets say I made Ssarah on a computer and then Made Ssam on another computer at my school or at my house... would the IP's show up the same?

nope. IPs are different for every computer, but the ISP (internet service provider) will be the same, but that doesn't really tell you if it is the same person.

Possibly if it's a school comp or library.

I'm not sure about that one but I don't think so. If you have two computers at home you can 'check' if the IPs are similar by going to: http://checkip.dyndns.org/ this website tells you your IP. I don't have two computers at home so I can't do it.

Oh well my computers at home are networked. So they do have the same exact IP address....I have posted on another forum on both computers and the IP address comes up the same.

I also know that by looking at three numbers...if they are the same then it means it is coming from the same town.  You can narrow it down to if it is coming from the same block.   That is why you should never give out IP address because people can find out where you live.

I will give you an example...

Here is what I can find with One of my school IP's address.... I changed the number a little bit and some of the info a little.

Sock puppets.  Usually someone who posts under different names to agree with themselves or attack their 'enemies' by adding to the ranks.

It's stupid, it sucks, often the person is so transparent it is not hard to know who it is.

but there are enough times where they are quite good at it, and yes, it could be embarassing at least and maybe even a bit dangerous at the worst.

As to IP's, AOL and some other ISP's use changing #'s everytime you initiate a new session.  But regular ISP's do indeed often just have the one number.

There are also places where freeware can be had (legally) that will allow you to trace a post to a city, try www.sover.net (Son of Spy freeware---a safe, informational freeware site) and look in security.  One you might check into is Sam Spade (they're listed alphabetically).  There is also a samspade.org website where you can do these things without downloading software, but it is a bit complex unless you know computers somewhat.

It's pretty creepy that people do this.  I agree with Mister Charlie that it's usually pretty easy to tell who the person is.

I guess that just goes to show how little of a life some people have if they create a whole bunch of aliases.
